This book addresses multiple aspects of biological clocks in prokaryotes. The first part of the book deals with the circadian clock system in cyanobacteria, i.e. the pioneer of bacterial clocks. Starting with the history and background of cyanobacteria and circadian rhythms in microorganisms, the topics range from the molecular basis, structure and evolution of the circadian clock to modelling approaches, Kai systems in cyanobacteria and biotechnological applications. In the second part, emergent timekeeping properties of bacteria in microbiomes and bacteria other than cyanobacteria are discussed. Since the discovery of circadian rhythms in cyanobacteria in the late 1980s, the field has exploded with new information. The cyanobacterial model system for studying circadian rhythms (Synechococcus elongatus), has allowed a detailed genetic dissection of the bacterial clock due to state-of-the-art methods in molecular, structural, and evolutionary biology. Cutting-edge research spanning from cyanobacteria and circadian phenomena in other kinds of bacteria, to microbiomes has now given the field another major boost. This book is aimed at junior and senior researchers alike. Students or researchers new to the field of biological clocks in prokaryotes will get a comprehensive overview, while more experienced researchers will get an update on the latest developments.

Cyanobacteria, the ancient photoautotrophs on the Earth have always been regarded as the most important organism to sustain life in the planet. They are among the first pioneering communities on various harsh habitat, hydrarch or xerarch, which finally facilitate the emergence of vast communities including higher plants. Being the progenitor of chloroplast, the cyanobacterial metabolisms has always fascinated microbiologist. Additionally, the ability of these prokaryotes to produce valuable and prolific sources of natural products signified their role in array of industrial sectors. Further, the attempts to engineer the cyanobacterial metabolisms in way to enhance production of these metabolites are gradually increasing. Therefore, in this book, we proposed to accumulate the knowledge of cyanobacterial metabolisms and molecules as an asset for students, researchers, and biotechnologists. Cyanobacteria: Metabolisms to Molecules will cover diversity, fundamental metabolisms, crucial metabolities and their synthesis, and bioinformatics. - Casts light on cyanobacterial assistance and their potential role in sustainable developments - Provides significant insights into the fundamentals of cyanobacterial metabolism as well as lesser known topics - Determines the role of cyanobacteria in public health

Cyanobacteria are ancient, primordial oxygenic phototrophs, and probably the progenitor of oxygen-evolving photosynthesis. They are a prolific source of natural products and metabolites and vitally important for environmental biology and biotechnology. Cyanobacterial Physiology presents foundational knowledge alongside the most recent advances in cyanobacterial biology. The title examines the challenges of industrial application through an understanding of the basic molecular machinery of cyanobacteria. Sixteen chapters are organized into three sections. The first part covers basic cyanobacterial biology, emphasizing environmental biology such as photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation, circadian rhythm, and programmed cell death. The second part includes the chapters that discuss cyanobacterial extremophiles, adaptations, secondary metabolites, osmoprotectants, and toxins. The third part covers aspects of cyanobacterial application that are based on environmental biology. Leading scientists contribute chapters on cyanobacteria. Cyanobacterial Physiology presents a comprehensive and vibrant solution for researchers and engineers in biotechnology interested in cyanobacteria and their applications. Topics include the cyanobacterial cell and fundamental physiological processes; the biotechnological potential of cyanobacteria with their versatile metabolism; and advanced applications of cyanobacterial products. At each stage the book is informed by basic and applied research. - Examines industrial applications of cyanobacteria through their basic molecular machinery - Presents foundational knowledge about cyanobacteria alongside the latest research - Leading scientists present basic and applied research on cyanobacteria - Covers cyanobacterial biology and applications in environmental biotechnology - Give researchers and engineers a comprehensive solution for working with cyanobacteria in relation to environmental biology and biotechnology

Circadian rhythms have been shown to be ubiquitous and critically important in the experimental laboratory, accounting for the difference between life and death in response to identical stimulus. The partly endogenous nature of circadian rhythms has been well documented and methods for their characterisation have been developed enabling the cellular and molecular mechanisms to be understood. Chronobiology and Chronomedicine aims to provide a review of these mechanisms underlying circadian rhythms and illustrate the role of the brain’s suprachiasmatic nuclei in the ‘pace-making’ process and the effects caused by ‘clock genes’ present in almost all cells. Beyond the mechanisms involved, the book discusses the relationship between body systems, disease, and proper circadian function; in particular, how disruption of the circadian rhythm is associated with ill health and disease status from observations made at the organismic level. The book is organised to be an ideal introduction for the postgraduate in various fields, reviewing developments and outlining methods to show the depth and breadth of chronobiology and chronomedicine, as well as an invaluable companion to researchers and healthcare professionals working in the field with an interest in developing novel therapeutic approaches.
