A central issue of cognitive studies of text production is What goes on in people's minds when they produce a text?, How do they plan the text?, How do they decide in what order to express their thoughts? In this volume, writers are followed in their footsteps during the moment-to-moment process of producing routine business letters. Their writing processes are explored in real time with the ultimate goal to contribute to a cognitive theory of text production. Such a theory should tell what kind of mental structures underly text production, how these structures are converted into coherent texts, and how this process is framed within real writing time. The study starts from a large corpus of real-life text production processes. It combines methods to explore both process and product of text production. Processes are described by analyzing the pause patterns that emerge in the course of writing. Products are described by analyzing their hierarchical structure. Together, these descriptions yield several significant insights in the real time organization of cognitive processes in production. The study can be characterized as a cognitive linguistic approach to text production. This volume will be of special interest to researchers in the field of (psycho-)linguistics, textlinguistics and cognitive science.

The Social and Cognitive Studies in Writing and Literacy Series, is devoted to books that bridge research, theory, and practice, exploring social and cognitive processes in writing and expanding our knowledge of literacy as an active constructive process--as students move from high school to college. This descriptive study of reading-to-write examines a critical point in every college student's academic performance: when he or she is faced with the task of reading a source, integrating personal ideas, and creating an individual text with a self-defined purpose. Offering an unusually comprehensive view of this process, the authors chart a group of freshmen as they study and write in their dormitories, recording their "think-aloud" strategies for reading, writing, and revising, their interpretation of the task, and their broader social, cultural, and contextual understanding of college writing. Flower, Stein, and colleagues convincingly conclude that the legacy of schooling in general makes the transition to college difficult and, more important, that the assumptions students hold and the strategies they use in undertaking this task play a significant role in their academic performance. Embracing a broad range of perspectives from rhetoric, composition, literacy research, literary and cultural theory, and cognitive psychology, this rigorous analysis treats reading-to-write as both a cognitive and social process. It will interest researchers and theoreticians in rhetoric and writing, teachers working with students in transition from high school to college, and educators involved in the links between cognition and the social process.

Revision is a fundamental part of writing and the acquisitionof revision skills is a complex and lengthy process. This book drawstogether current research on revision from two areas. The first is thelarge body of empirical work on the cognitive processes involved inthe revision of written language production. This research looks athow operations of revision intervene during various phases of writing, at the resources or constraints (e.g., working memory load, contentknowledge, strategy use) that affect revision and at developmentalaspects of revision capabilities. The second area of research concernsthe study of students learning to revise texts in instructionalsettings. This research examines the effects of instructional designconditions (structure and sequencing of tasks, strategy instruction, word processing) and the impact of peer interactions on studentacquisition of revision skills. The contributions by European and North American specialists providenew insights into revision processes and raise new questions about theinterplay between cognitive and instructional factors. The authorspresent critical reviews of research findings, as well as recentempirical work conducted in experimental and classroom settings."Revision" is an essential resource for researchers in cognitive, developmental and educational psychology who are interested inlanguage acquisition, and for professionals of language instruction, including pre-service and in-service teacher training.
