Today, autonomous robots are used in a rather limited range of applications such as exploration of inaccessible locations, cleaning floors, mowing lawns etc. However, ongoing hardware improvements (and human fantasy) steadily reveal new robotic applications of significantly higher sophistication. For such applications, the crucial bottleneck in the engineering process tends to shift from physical boundaries to controller generation. As an attempt to automatize this process, Evolutionary Robotics has successfully been used to generate robotic controllers of various types. However, a major challenge of the field remains the evolution of truly complex behavior. Furthermore, automatically created controllers often lack analyzability which makes them useless for safety-critical applications. In this book, a simple controller model based on Finite State Machines is proposed which allows a straightforward analysis of evolved behaviors. To increase the model's evolvability, a procedure is introduced which, by adapting the genotype-phenotype mapping at runtime, efficiently traverses both the behavioral search space as well as (recursively) the search space of genotype-phenotype mappings. Furthermore, a data-driven mathematical framework is proposed which can be used to calculate the expected success of evolution in complex environments.

In this book the use of ER techniques for the design of self-organising group behaviours, for both simulated and real robots is introduced. This research has a twofold value. From an engineering perspective, an automatic methodology for synthesising complex behaviours in a robotic system is described. ER techniques should be used in order to obtain robust and efficient group behaviours based on self-organisation. From a more theoretical point of view, the second important contribution brought forth by the author's experiments concerns the understanding of the basic principles underlying self-organising behaviours and collective intelligence. In this experimental work, the evolved behaviours are analysed in order to uncover the mechanisms that have led to a certain organisation. In summary, this book tries to mediate between two apparently opposed perspectives: engineering and cognitive science. The experiments presented and the results obtained contribute to the assessment of ER not only as a design tool, but also as a methodology for modelling and understanding intelligent adaptive behaviours.

Robot learning is a broad and interdisciplinary area. This holds with regard to the basic interests and the scienti c background of the researchers involved, as well as with regard to the techniques and approaches used. The interests that motivate the researchers in this eld range from fundamental research issues, such as how to constructively understand intelligence, to purely application o- ented work, such as the exploitation of learning techniques for industrial robotics. Given this broad scope of interests, it is not surprising that, although AI and robotics are usually the core of the robot learning eld, disciplines like cog- tive science, mathematics, social sciences, neuroscience, biology, and electrical engineering have also begun to play a role in it. The idea of evolving machines, whose origins can be traced to the cybernetics movementofthe1940sand1950s,hasrecentlyresurgedintheformofthenascent ?eld of bio-inspired systems and evolvable hardware. The inaugural workshop, Towards Evolvable Hardware, took place in Lausanne in October 1995, followed by the First International Conference on Evolvable Systems: From Biology to Hardware (ICES), held in Tsukuba, Japan in October 1996. The second ICES conference was held in Lausanne in September 1998, with the third and fourth being held in Edinburgh, April 2000 and Tokyo, October 2001 respectively. This has become the leading conference in the ?eld of evolvable systems and the 2003 conference promised to be at least as good as, if not better than, the four that preceeded it. The ?fth international conference was built on the success of its predec- sors, aiming at presenting the latest developments in the ?eld. In addition, it brought together researchers who use biologically inspired concepts to imp- ment real systems in arti?cial intelligence, arti?cial life, robotics, VLSI design and related domains. We would say that this ?fth conference followed on from the previous four in that it consisted of a number of high-quality interesting thought-provoking papers.
