The concept generation process seems like an intuitional thought: difficult to capture and perform, although everyone is capable of it. It is not an analytical process but a synthetic process which has yet to be clarified. Furthermore, new research methods for investigating the concept generation process—a very difficult task since the concept generation process is driven by inner feelings deeply etched in the mind—are necessary to establish its theory and methodology. Concept Generation for Design Creativity – A Systematized Theory and Methodology presents the concept generation process both theoretically and methodologically. Theoretically, the concept generation process is discussed by comparing metaphor, abduction, and General Design Theory from the notions of similarities and dissimilarities. Analogy, blending, and integration by thematic relation have been explained methodologically. So far, these theories and methods have been discussed independently, and the relations among them have not been clarified. Two newly developed research methods to investigate the concept generation process are clearly explained: the explanation-based protocol analysis and constructive simulation. Engineering design idea-generation sessions often result in dozens, if not hundreds, of ideas. These ideas must be quickly evaluated and filtered in order to select a few candidate concepts to move forward in the design process. While creativity is often stressed in the conceptual phases of design, it receives little attention in these later phases -- particularly during concept selection. This is largely because there are no methods for quickly rating or identifying worthwhile creative concepts during this process. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis was to develop and test a novel method for evaluating the creativity and feasibility of design concepts. The first phase of this research involved the creation of a creativity evaluation methodology that utilizes word selections and semantic similarity to quickly and effectively evaluate candidate concepts. To test its utility during concept selection, an empirical study with ten engineering designers was completed. The results revealed that our methodology and rating system could be used as a proxy for measuring design creativity regardless of the openness of the design task. The second phase of this thesis sought to investigate the impact of decision-making bias during concept selection and to refine our design creativity evaluation methodology. In order to accomplish this, an online questionnaire was developed and administered to 11 expert and 11 novice design engineers. The results from this study supported the use of our creativity evaluation methodology with both expert and novice raters for early design creativity. It also contributes to our understanding of experience bias in creativity evaluation and provided a framework for computational design creativity systems. The final phase of this thesis sought to explore the use of the creativity assessment methodologies within a classroom setting and to compare the results from team evaluations and individual team member evaluations. During this phase, our creativity evaluation methodology was developed into a printable toolkit to help students evaluate designs for an in-class project. In this study, 32 students in teams of four utilized the toolkit to analyze design sketches from their team members. The results from this study showed significant relationships between individual and team perception based evaluations that utilized sliding scales and group discussion and our adjective selection method. However, the widely adopted creativity evaluation method from academia that compared designs feature by feature appeared to be measuring something else entirely. The results from this thesis are used to develop recommendations for the use of creative concept selection tools in engineering design. In addition, the results are extrapolated to create recommendations for an online web application geared enhancing the usability and accessibility of concept selection tools for both academic and industrial implementation.

Innovation and creativity are prioritized in engineering solutions, yet engineers and designers must also grapple with complex design problems which are highly constrained by requirements, regulations, and limited resources. This research seeks to understand the relationship between design constraints and concept generation methods in order to support innovation and creativity in the design of complex systems. A design study was conducted with 12 groups of civilian engineers from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport. Participants were asked to generate concepts for two different design problems in which the ideation method and level of constraint were varied. Group brainstorming and a modified 6-3-5 method were used as a direct comparison, while a sketch modelling exercise was also incorporated to obtain qualitative observations and serve as a training exercise for participants. All generated ideas during the study were evaluated on four different ideation metrics: quantity, variety, quality, novelty. Constraint did not have a significant effect on quantity or variety; however low constrained problems produced statistically more novel ideas (for brainstorming only) and high constrained problems produced statically higher quality ideas (for both brainstorming and modified 6-3-5). The concept generation method has a marginally significant effect on the quality and variety; a modified 6-3-5 method produces a marginally higher quantity and brainstorming produces a marginally higher variety. Brainstorming produces significantly higher novelty and modified 6-3-5 method produces significantly higher quality (only for low constrained cases). The design task itself has a significant interaction effect on quantity, novelty, and quality of ideas generated which warrants further investigation.

Design theory and methodology has had concept generation and selection as one of its focuses due to their link to students' creative and innovative abilities. However, much of the literature has focused on its application and response in sample populations in the United States. This is problematic because the demand for more innovative and creative individuals is needed on a global scale. For example, in Morocco, high unemployment rate in the youth population is one of the reasons why its inhabitants seek to improve themselves. To do so, there have been an increase in programs that aim to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and design thinking in Morocco. Yet there is limited evidence on how the findings of this research transfer to Moroccan culture. In response to this, the thesis was developed to identify similarities and differences in concept generation and screening practices and performances between a U.S. and a Moroccan student population. In addition, it sought to identify the role of risk taking in concept generation and screening practices in a Moroccan student sample. In order to accomplish this, data was captured during a two-day workshop held in Marrakech, Morocco with 40 students through a partnership with Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, Morocco. The same workshop format, timeframe, design task, and administrators were used at both locations as a previous study conducted with a U.S. student sample. Specifically, during the workshop, the participants were asked to generate as many concepts as possible for a new, innovative product that can froth milk in a short amount of time with minimal instruction. The participants were separated into three to four people teams, where they generated concepts individually, and then exchanged their ideas as a group for evaluation. The results of this thesis showed that while the U.S. student sample produced a higher number of ideas on average than the Moroccan sample, the quality of the ideas generated between these two samples was not significantly different. U.S. females were found to produce more ideas (idea fluency) than U.S. male participants, although this gender difference was not observed for the Moroccan sample. In addition, ownership was shown to transcend culture for ideas perceived by team members to have little to no future value in the design process. And finally, ideas with low goodness were found to have a higher probability of passing concept screening if it was evaluated by its owner for both populations. This contributes to the understanding of concept generation, showing that culture may play a role in affecting the quantity (idea fluency) but not the quality (idea goodness) of concept generation. It may also help to show that idea goodness and ownership bias may impact concept screening preferences regardless of the cultural background of the participants. The second goal of this thesis was to investigate the impact of risk-taking on the concept generation and screening abilities of the Moroccan student sample. It was achieved by exploring the impact of the four factors of preference for creativity and one factor of willingness to take risks on concept generation and screening. The results showed that individuals in the Moroccan sample with higher levels of conscientiousness, lower levels of team centrality and influence, and higher levels of willingness to take risks will have a higher idea fluency. On the other hand, for each idea screened, it was found that higher levels of idea goodness and agreeableness result in a higher probability that an idea passes concept screening for further consideration. In addition, it was found that for ideas owned by others, higher levels of agreeableness and neuroticism of the evaluator would result in higher probability that the idea passes concept screening for further consideration. This contributes to a better understanding on the concept generation and screening practices of Moroccan students. As a whole, this thesis provides some of the first empirical evidence on the cultural differences in concept generation and screening practices between a U.S. and Moroccan student populations. It also provides one of the first attempt at investigating how risk-taking impacts the concept generation and screening habits of Moroccan students. The results from this thesis can be used to aid int he development of future teaching methods relating to the creative design process in Morocco, as well as help the adaption of existing design methodologies for Moroccan students.
