This textbook gives a wide-ranging, research-informed introduction to issues in lifelong learning across a variety of educational settings and practices. Its very accessible approach is multi-disciplinary drawing on sociology and psychology in particular. In addition, issues are discussed within an international context. While there has been a proliferation of texts focussing on particular areas of practice such as higher education, there is little in the way of a broad overview. Chapters one to four introduce various conceptions of lifelong learning, the factors that impinge on learning through the life course, and the social and the economic rationale for lifelong learning. Chapters five-ten consider the varied sites of lifelong learning, from the micro to macro (from the home to the region to the virtual). Chapter eleven draws the strands together in the context of turbulence and continuing transition in personal and work roles, and against the background of future technological development. This timely overview will be relevant to education and training professionals, education studies students and the general reader.

This book proposes an alternative strategy to improve and sustain prosperity, through the creation of an entrepreneurial culture in learning cities or city regions. The edited collection provides insights into how entrepreneurship, education, job creation and social inclusion can be aligned through entrepreneurial learning, in the context of territorial development. With rich and varied contributions from a wide field, including policy makers, entrepreneurs, an investment banker, leaders of universities and councils, the voluntary sector, scientists, educators and students, it reviews and assesses how learning cities and regions may become more prosperous by investing in the development of entrepreneurial skills throughout lifelong learning. Reinforced by examples on developing and retaining entrepreneurial people, this book contributes to our understanding of how entrepreneurial learning can be fostered in different city and city-region contexts. It makes an interesting contribution to the field in terms of mapping out complex issues and testing the practical validity of the concept, while also providing rich and insightful case studies centred on the Welsh experience with entrepreneurial learning city regions. The high quality international contributions demonstrate the new worldwide interest in developing an entrepreneurial culture for the benefit of a city or region, rather than an entrepreneurial mind-set for individual benefit. This fascinating subject will be of interest to many social scientists, policymakers, and practitioners. It will be found especially valuable for professionals involved in economic, inclusive and sustainable city or regional development.

This comprehensive collection discusses topical issues essential to both scholarship and policy making in the realm of Lifelong Learning (LLL) policies and how far they succeed in supporting young people across their life courses, rather than one-sidedly fostering human capital for the economy. Examining specific regional and local contexts across Europe, all various in context, this book uses original research to evaluate differences in scope, approach, orientation, and objectives. It enquires into the embedding of LLL policies into the regional economy, the labour market, education and training systems and the individual life projects of young people, with focus on those in situations of near social exclusion.

Since the second half of the twentieth century, Lifelong Learning (LLL) has become a fashionable mantra, a political slogan, and an active tool to stimulate economic growth and foster social cohesion. However, where does its dominance lie? According to Rogers (2006) LLLs main success is that it has predominantly achieved to become mainstream, as it provided a convincing rationale for embracing the natural learning process which continues unifying education into a common process, challenging the distinctiveness of educational sectors, and acknowledging that learning takes place in different contexts, thus relocating learning in both formal and informal settings. Thence, recent conceptualizations of LLL, under the universally rising awareness that learning is but an integral part of our everyday lives, and tends to continually expand, accommodating the multitude of types, sites, practices or modes of learning, both intentional and incidental. On these grounds, this book has been conceived to explore contemporary concepts, practices, benefits and challenges associated with LLL at formal, non-formal and informal levels. How LLL is currently perceived? What are the "regimes of truth" LLL is informed by? What are the influences, constraints and impact of the diverse LLL sites and practices? What are the effects on learning and learning outcomes? What are the implications for policy making, as well as for the development and implementation of LLL initiatives? These are some indicative inquiries which guided the structure and the selection of themes in the present volume. Furthermore there has also been an effort to reach for multiple perspectives from different nations around the globe. The book is structured around two principal axes (theory-based and research-based studies) so as to provide in depth insights into debates and challenges that revolve around LLL, whilst combining theory and empirical research in a dialectical fashion. It may thus be of particular interest to a wide range of audiences -- such as researchers, policy makers and practitioners -- who wish to get an international perspective in LLL. This occurs through chapters that prompt reflection, showcase innovative professional practices and provide impressive scopes of field research.
