Controlling ist immer noch ein umstrittener Begriff. Scheinbare Widersprüche lösen sich auf, wenn man Controlling als spezifisches Element der Führungsorganisation erklärt. Notwendig hierfür ist eine Abgrenzung der Funktionen, die einem institutionalisierten Controllung übertragen werden sollten. Bei Betrachtung der Managementberatungsfunktion des Controllers wird untersucht, ob die daraus resultierende Trennung von Entscheidungsvorbereitung und -kompetenz vorteilhaft ist. Die Rolle des Controllers als Kontrollinstanz wird mit Hilfe hierarchischer Principal-Agent-Modelle analysiert. Im Ergebnis kann der Controller die Service- und Kontrollfunktion ausschließlich in integrierter Form effizient wahrnehmen. Hieraus ergeben sich praktische Konsequenzen für die Organisation des Controllings.

English summary: Economic models are not neutral reflections of reality; they always convey a certain view of the issues under investigation as well. Matthias Meyer deals with this aspect of economic theory formation in an analysis of the works of Max Weber and F.A. von Hayek. In accordance with this, the critical examination of economic models has to be expanded to include its heuristic dimension. Looking at the normative principal-agent model from this perspective, the author shows how a regulation mentality has slowly crept into economics, a mentality which is actually inconsistent with economics itself. Using the theories of Ronald Coase and Oliver Williamson, the author has developed an alternative theoretical concept of the principal-agent theory, in which the principal and the agent are confronted with a reciprocal problem. German description: Okonomische Modelle sind nicht neutrale Abbilder der Wirklichkeit, sondern vermitteln immer auch eine bestimmte Sichtweise der zu untersuchenden Zusammenhange. Matthias Meyer arbeitet diesen wirklichkeitskonstituierenden Aspekt okonomischer Theoriebildung in der Auseinandersetzung mit Max Weber und Friedrich August von Hayek heraus. Die kritische Uberprufung okonomischer Modelle ist dementsprechend um deren heuristische Dimension zu erweitern. Betrachtet man das normative Prinzipal-Agenten-Modell aus dieser Perspektive, lasst sich nachzeichnen, wie auf diesem Weg relativ unbeachtet ein der Okonomik eigentlich widersprechendes Steuerungsdenken Einzug gehalten hat. Der Agent erscheint als Marionette, der vom Prinzipal mit Hilfe des Anreizvertrags auf einen zuvor modelltheoretisch bestimmten Idealzustand gesteuert wird. Unter Ruckgriff auf Uberlegungen von Ronald Coase und Oliver Williamson erarbeitet der Autor eine alternative, modelltheoretische Konzeptualisierung des Prinzipal-Agenten-Problems: Prinzipal und Agent sind im instititutonellen Status Quo mit einem reziproken Problem konfrontiert. Hiervon ausgehend kann nach institutionellen Arrangements gesucht werden, die es erlauben, die Interaktionspartner wechselseitig besserzustellen.
