This book is a basic collection of exercises that we offer to clients of the FitzGordon Method Core Walking Program. Any one who walks in our door will receive a series of exercises meant to create a workout tailored for them specifically. We all need to work on different parts of their body to create a balanced whole and no two people are the same. At the FitzGordon Method we analyze our clients to help them rebuild their bodies in a conscious and specific way. While we work with all of these exercises and more, the idea is to only do the exercises you need to bring balance to a certain part of your body. You should test your ability in all of these exercises and, as long as you are doing them correctly, focus only on the ones that seem more difficult. The work is a search for ease in the body and ease in the mind. Once an exercise is easy enough you might do it once in a while for maintenance but continually focus on the muscle groups that don't work as well as others and maintain the discipline required to develop a balanced body.

From the authors of the bestselling ChiRunning comes a revolutionary program that blends the health benefits of walking with the core principles of T’ai Chi to deliver maximum physical, mental, and spiritual fitness. The low-impact health benefits of walking have made it one of the most popular forms of daily exercise. Yet few people experience all the benefits that walking can offer. In ChiWalking, Danny and Katherine Dreyer, well-known walking and running coaches, teach the walking technique they created that transforms walking from a mundane means of locomotion into an intensely rewarding practice that enhances mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Similar to Pilates, yoga, and T’ai Chi, ChiWalking emphasizes body alignment and mindfulness while strengthening the core muscles of the body. The five mindful steps of the ChiWalking program will get anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, into great shape from head to toe, inside and out. 1. Get aligned. Develop great posture and better balance. 2. Engage your core. Make back and knee pain disappear. 3. Create balance. Walk faster, farther, and with less effort. 4. Make a choice. Choose from a menu of twelve great walks such as the Cardio Walk, the Energizing Walk, or the Walking Meditation, to keep your exercise program fresh. 5. Move forward. Make walking any distance a mindful, enjoyable experience, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned walker.

The Walking Code is a system for understanding how to keep the body properly aligned by consciously controlling the use of the core. The Walking Code is one branch of the Quantum Movement System, which also includes The Tai Chi Code and The Tango Code. The Walking Code is based on an analysis of the Eight Fundamental Techniques of Tai Chi, applied to various walking gaits. These include strolling, power walking, walking uphill, walking downhill, walking up stairs, walking downstairs, turning, and stopping. Each of these gaits is performed using a specific combination of core rotations. Most people function without any conscious awareness of how the core is designed to function. This often leads to poor walking technique, misalignment of the body, early wear and tear on the joints, and ultimately to pain. The Walking Code teaches how to become conscious of these patterns of core movement. By doing so, you can learn to move more effectively, more fluidly, and most importantly, move without pain.

Poor walking technique is an unrecognized cause of pain and disability. Half of all visits to a doctor are for pain in the back and other joints in the lower body. Much of this pain is a result of wear and tear caused by poor body alignment. This book provides an introductory look at The Walking Code, a complete guide to improving body function by learning how to move from the core. When you learn to move correctly from your core, you can keep you spine and joints naturally aligned. This will allow you to prevent the premature wear and tear that leads to pain, dysfunction, and eventually disability. The Walking Code is one branch of the Quantum Movement System, developed by Dr. Todd Martin, a Family Medicine physician, Tai Chi practitioner, and professional Argentine Tango dancer. The Quantum Movement System provides a code that explains how to control the body from the core to improve function in almost any activity. A complete analysis of The Walking Code is provided in the book, Quantum Walking, Unlocking the Code to Core Movement.
