This book offers a presentation of some new trends in operator theory and operator algebras, with a view to their applications. It consists of separate papers written by some of the leading practitioners in the field. The content is put together by the three editors in a way that should help students and working mathematicians in other parts of the mathematical sciences gain insight into an important part of modern mathematics and its applications. While different specialist authors are outlining new results in this book, the presentations have been made user friendly with the aid of tutorial material. In fact, each paper contains three things: a friendly introduction with motivation, tutorial material, and new research. The authors have strived to make their results relevant to the rest of mathematics. A list of topics discussed in the book includes wavelets, frames and their applications, quantum dynamics, multivariable operator theory, $C*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras. Some longer papers present recent advances on particular, long-standing problems such as extensions and dilations, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, and diagonals of self-adjoint operators.

This volume contains the proceedings of the eighteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA), hosted by the Unit for Business Mathematics and Informatics of North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa from July 3 to 6, 2007. The conference (as well as these proceedings) was dedicated to Professors Joseph A. Ball and Marinus M. Kaashoek on the occasion of their 60th and 70th birthdays, respectively. This conference had a particular focus on Von Neumann algebras at the interface of operator theory with functional analysis and on applications of operator theory to differential equations.

This volume is devoted to Joseph A. (Joe) Ball’s contributions to operator theory and its applications and in celebration of his seventieth birthday. Joe Ball’s career spans over four and a half decades, starting with his work on model theory and related topics for non-contractions and operators on multiply connected domains. Later on, more applied operator theory themes appeared in his work, involving factorization and interpolation for operator-valued functions, with extensive applications in system and control theory. He has worked on nonlinear control, time-varying systems and, more recently, on multidimensional systems and noncommutative H∞-theory on the unit ball and polydisk, and more general domains, and these are only the main themes in his vast oeuvre. Fourteen research papers constitute the core of this volume, written by mathematicians who have collaborated with Joe or have been influenced by his vast mathematical work. A curriculum vitae, a publicationslist and a list of Joe Ball’s PhD students are included in this volume, as well as personal reminiscences by colleagues and friends. Contributions by Yu. M. Arlinskii, S. Hassi, M. Augat, J. W. Helton, I. Klep, S. McCullough, S. Balasubramanian, U. Wijesooriya, N. Cohen, Q. Fang, S. Gorai, J. Sarkar, G. J. Groenewald, S. ter Horst, J. Jaftha, A. C. M. In this monograph the natural evolution operators of autonomous first-order differential equations with exponential dichotomy on an arbitrary Banach space are studied in detail. Characterizations of these so-called exponentially dichotomous operators in terms of their resolvents and additive and multiplicative perturbation results are given. This is the first book at graduate level on autonomous first-order differential equations with exponential dichotomy in a Banach space.

New Difference Schemes For Partial Differential Equations written by Allaberen Ashyralyev and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

The present monograph is devoted to the construction and investigation of the new high order of accuracy difference schemes of approximating the solutions of regular and singular perturbation boundary value problems for partial differential equations. The construction is based on the exact difference scheme and Taylor's decomposition on the two or three points. This approach permitted essentially to extend to a class of problems where the theory of difference methods is applicable. Namely, now it is possible to investigate the differential equations with variable coefficients and regular and singular perturbation boundary value problems. The investigation is based on new coercivity inequalities. The book will be of value to professional mathematicians, as well as advanced students in the fields of numerical analysis, functional analysis, and ordinary and partial differential equations.

Eidelman and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

The theory of parabolic equations, a well-developed part of the contemporary partial differential equations and mathematical physics, is the subject theory of of an immense research activity. A continuing interest in parabolic equations is caused both by the depth and complexity of mathematical problems emerging here, and by its importance in specific applied problems of natural science, technology, and economics. This book aims at a consistent and, as far as possible, a complete exposition of analytic methods of constructing, investigating, and using fundamental solutions of the Cauchy problem for the following four classes of linear parabolic equations with coefficients depending on all variables: -7 E : 2b-parabolic partial differential equations (parabolic equations of a qua- l homogeneous structure), in which every spatial variable may have its own to the time variable. weight with respect E : degenerate partial differential equations of Kolmogorov's structure, which 2 generalize classical Kolmogorov equations of diffusion with inertia. E3: pseudo-differential equations with non-smooth quasi-homogeneous symbols. E : fractional diffusion equations. 4 These classes of equations generalize in various directions the classical equations and systems parabolic in the Petrovsky sense, which were defined in [180] and studied in a number of monographs [83, 45, 146, 107, 76] and survey articles [102, 1, 215, 70, 46].
