In der folgenden Arbeit werden Mechanismen der Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheiten einerseits und der Kompensation derselbigen andererseits in Kindertagesstätten diskutiert. Dafür werden zu Beginn die wichtigsten Begriffe definiert sowie die Theorie Pierre Bourdieus zur Entstehung sozialer Ungleichheiten im Bildungssystem erläutert. Abschließend an die Diskussion erfolgt im Rahmen des Fazits eine Auswertung sowie ein Ausblick. Spätestens die internationale Vergleichsstudie PISA im Jahr 2000 lenkte Aufmerksamkeit auf bestehende Ungleichheiten im deutschen Bildungssystem. Sie stellte eine Korrelation zwischen sozialer Herkunft und schulischer Laufbahn fest. Zahlreiche darauffolgende Studien belegten diesen Zusammenhang und untersuchten dabei vor allem den Übergang von Primar- zu Sekundarstufe. Seit Verankerung des Bildungsauftrages für Kindergärten im Kinder- und Jugendhilfegesetz 1990 gerät auch der Elementarbereich als erste Instanz des deutschen Bildungssystems zunehmend in den Fokus. Damit einher geht die Frage nach sozialen Ungleichheiten in den Jahren vor Schuleintritt. Bildung "von Anfang an" wird als Schlüssel zur "effektive[n] Ausschöpfung aller humanen Ressourcen und Potentiale" und damit zur Verbesserung des generellen gesellschaftlichen Bildungsniveaus sowie zur Überwindung sozialer Ungleichheiten betrachtet. Laut Studien zur Wirkung früher Bildung führt der Besuch eines Kindergartens zu höheren Bildungsabschlüssen sowie höheren Lebenseinkommen. Nicht zuletzt das 2019 in Kraft getretene "Gute-Kita-Gesetz" lässt große Hoffnungen schöpfen für eine Verbesserung der frühkindlichen Bildung.
