The majority of technology transfer studies done today are derived from Economics and Management Sciences, and there are relatively few studies that examine the geographical concerns of technology transfer from a glocal perspective. Geography of Technology Transfer in China fills the gap by aiming to discover the geographical character of technology transfer and its determinants from the interaction in both global and local scales, which involves the study of innovation geography, economic geography, urban economics, and regional economics. The chapters included in this book present a clear structure of a series of studies performed both theoretically and empirically. The research begins by constructing an analytic framework for urban technology transfer study and abstracts the study target from technological innovation subjects to cities, along with establishing the structure system, the dimension system, and the effect system of urban technology transfer research. This then develops an initial conceptual framework for urban technology transfer research. In addition, it analyses the hierarchy of China's urban technology innovation system and the segmentation of the technology transfer market, from the perspective of technology transfer. All in all, the book aspires to depict the spatial evolution of China's technological innovation system and technology transfer system from a city size perspective, thereby realising the spatial scale of technology transfer study.

The very nature of wiki-based collaborative writing around a topic-related content is the interaction of wiki functionality, content, and collaborative learning, and how the functionality is used to create the content collaboratively. This way of looking at wikis provides a theoretical model that helps researchers and educators to identify a number of category actions that can be carried out on wikis when students perform collaborative writing activities. This work aims at using the proposed model to evaluate the impacts of MediaWiki on collaborative writing among students in teacher education. Pedagogical implications are drawn from the results and future research actions are envisaged to enhance the quality of wiki-based collaborative writing in teacher education. Recent years have witnessed the rising use of wikis as computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environments. However, reports on the application of wiki technology in facilitating collaborative projects at the primary level are few; in particular, information on the affordances and constraints of wikis at this learning stage is limited. Such information is essential for educators when planning and implementing wikis as an effective educational tool. This study aimed to introduce wiki technology to facilitate collaborative project-based learning (Collaborative PjBL) in a primary "General Studies" (GS) course and to explore the associated affordances and constraints. A total of 388 Hong Kong Primary-five (P5) students from 4 local Chinese primary schools used a wiki for their social science group project during their GS course. Adopting a mixed-method approach, a combination of qualitative and quantitative data were collected, including focus group interviews, students' activities within the wiki platform, students' reflections written on the wiki pages, and a questionnaire. These data were used to explore the affordances and constraints of the wiki for collaborative projects as perceived by the primary-school students, and to gain an understanding of students' attitudes towards and perceptions of the wiki in general. The findings showed that the wiki provided five kinds of educational affordances, six kinds of technological affordances, and two kinds of social affordances. The affordances that were aimed for the collaborative PjBL task were therefore achieved. At the same time, constraints were found to be related to technological factors and users' dispositions. To counterbalance constraints, teachers could select wiki variants and provide more scaffolding on the use of wiki during the process of project completion. Students' attitudes and perceptions towards the wiki were found to be strongly positive after the group project implementation. The research contributes to our understanding of the use of a form of social media, wiki technology, in primary education. On a theoretical level, it deepens previous research by identifying the categories of the wiki's affordances and constraints for primary-school students' collaborative PjBL. On a practical level, the pedagogical implications derived from this study may provide guidelines for primary-school educators to plan collaborative PjBL activities with wiki technology. The purpose of this study was to investigate how Scardamalia's (2002) socio-cognitive determinants of knowledge building emerge in a computer-supported collaborative writing task, and to understand students' perceptions of knowledge building experience and the use of tools, including wikis, to support the collaborative writing process. The setting of this study was a graduate level online course on Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), in which all course activities were conducted collaboratively in an online environment. Data sources included: transcripts of online inputs in the wiki areas; interviews with 15 participants; participants' reflective journals; transcripts of asynchronous online discussions and synchronous chats. Data were analyzed using content analysis for the transcripts of wiki areas and grounded theory approach (Strauss & Corbin, 1998) was used in the analysis of data from the interviews. Results of the data analysis indicated that the three groups in this study participated in the collaborative knowledge building activity in different ways. The three factors that influenced their participation in the activity included: group dynamics, collaborative writing task, and collaborative writing tools. These factors interacted with each another and impacted their knowledge building discourse in the following ways: improvable ideas, constructive use of authoritative sources, epistemic agency, and embedded and transformative assessment. As a result of their engagement in knowledge building discourse, participants successfully completed the collaborative writing project and shared a strong sense of community and co-ownership of the knowledge product. The findings of this study may shed light on the strategies and environmental factors that encourage knowledge building discourse as well as the synergetic combination of technology tools and knowledge building task. In addition, understanding the process of knowledge building in a computer-supported collaborative writing task and the participants perception of knowledge building and the use of tools may help instructor better prepare learners to become collaborative learners and effective knowledge workers.

[Truncated abstract] This study explored the possibility of wikis to be used as tools for collaborative learning and knowledge sharing in schools. The social constructivist theory of Vygostsky was used as the foundation theory for the study. It was further extended to be used in conjunction with activity theory for the practical explanation of wikis use for collaborative learning. The classification of wikis as Computer-supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) enabled them to be considered using three common collaborative learning approaches, namely: inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning and project-based learning. The thesis addresses three main research questions to see: whether wikis can be used as a tool for collaborative learning and knowledge sharing in schools; what collaborative learning approaches suit wiki-based learning; and lastly, success factors for wikis implementation in schools. A study was conducted with Form Four secondary school (16 year old) students in Malaysia who were taking Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as their elective subject, and their teachers. The study compared results from two categories of school: Smart Schools (participants in government initiatives to integrate ICT in the school system and teaching and learning) and normal schools (ordinary schools with limited ICT infrastructure). Altogether, there were 11 participating schools from five states in Malaysia: six Smart Schools and five normal schools. The study adopted design-based research (DBR) methodology, which is a relatively new research approach in education. The DBR followed four iterative phases: design wikis learning activities beginning with an initial design study, re-design after interviews with teachers before the start of the study and two more iterations of re-designing wikis learning activities in the middle and last phases of the study. Two modules from the ICT subject were integrated into the wikis learning design: ICT and Society, and Multimedia. Students used wikis for learning over four months. A mixed method approach was used to gather data. It included qualitative, quantitative and wikis artefact analysis in order to answer the research questions. Individual students were given questionnaires at the end of the study and group interviews were conducted to gather their perceptions of working with wikis. Teachers were also interviewed at the end of the study...

A book about wikis! That's what people need. Because with wiki technology, lots of people can freely work - gether – they can even generate very large works in the intellectual realm. See for yourself: Today, we still marvel at our massive church buildings, each c- structed over a period of centuries, requiring an immense amount of labor and often bearing the cultural stamp of all of the epochs during which it was created. Someone just has to begin by placing stone upon stone and motivate the people nearby to help out a bit. In places where such enthusiastic fellow men and women lend a hand and donate materials, great things can emerge. And where they are absent? Either scant ruins remain, or the iron will of a pharaoh is - quired, an army of drivers, the sweat of a people and a mountain of gold. Great things can also be created in that way – take the Py- mids: a clear concept, no blending of styles, pure will. Those are two very different paths. The one entails passionate people devotedly building something together for the common good; the other: a single will manages a variety of resources to achieve a set goal. Wikis are tools with which lots of people with a minimum of - ganization, planning, money and time can create something together and communicate with each other from several scattered computers or over the Internet.
