"Im ersten Teil seiner Studie rekonstruiert der Verfasser die Subjekttheorie Foucaults in vier sinnvollen Schritten. Claus Dahlmanns gelingt es, die Vielschichtigkeit und Differenziertheit der Werke Foucaults auf einen roten Faden hin zu reduzieren, ohne dass seine Darstellung zu vereinfachend oder bloß exemplarisch wirkt. So ist ein Text entstanden, der als elaborierte Einführung in das Thema ebenso gelesen werden kann wie als differenzierte Studie zur Subjektproblematik. Als zweiter Teil schließt sich ein Vergleich mit Norbert Elias an, der sich ebenfalls in einer historischen Perspektive mit der Herausbildung moderner Subjektivität beschäftigt hat. Die vergleichenden Aspekte sind zahlreich und vielschichtig. Sie zeigen zwei sehr unterschiedliche Ansätze, die jedoch verschränkt zueinander gedacht jeweils auf Fehlstellen und Auslassungen der anderen Seite aufmerksam machen, die hohe diskursive Bedeutsamkeit haben. Es wird auch deutlich, dass sich nicht einfach eineMischform aus beidenAnsätzen bilden lässt, sondern dass unser reflexives Bemühen um einen Diskurs der Subjektivität eher an gegensätzlichen Enden ansetzen muss, um hinreichend Diversität in unseren Beschreibungen zu ermöglichen." Kersten Reich Claus Dahlmanns hat an der Erziehungswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität zu Köln Lehramt und Diplom-Pädagogik studiert. Mit dieser Arbeit promovierte er in Pädagogik bei Kersten Reich. Zurzeit arbeitet er als Lecturer für den Grundlagenbereich Erziehungswissenschaft an der Humanwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität zu Köln.

This study addresses two desiderata of historical emotion research: reflecting on the interdependence of textual functions and the representation of emotions, and acknowledging the interdependence of studies on the premodern and modern periods in the history of emotion. Contemporary research on the history of emotion is characterised by a proliferation of studies on very different eras, authors, themes, texts, and aspects. The enthusiasm and confidence with which situations, actions, and interactions involving emotions in history are discovered, however, has led to overly direct attempts to access the represented objects (emotions/feelings/affects); as a result, too little attention has been paid to the conditions and functions of their representations. That is why this study engages with the emotion research of historians from an unashamedly philological perspective. Such an approach provides, among other things, insights into the varied, often contradictory, observations that can be made about the history of emotion in modernity and premodernity.

Platonic Romanticism had a dark underside from its inception: Romantic Disillusionism, encompassing the Gothic and the new demonic doppelganger. The Classical Tradition's conflict between Plato and Pyrrho, foundationalism and scepticism, optimism and pessimism was thus continued. Lord Byron's was the most listened-to and echoed voice of Romantic Disillusionism in Europe, though by far not the only one. This comparative study of a multiplicity of sceptical English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Czech voices shows how traditional Pyrrhonic arguments were updated to suit the decades of the Romantic Movement, surviving as a subversive countercurrent to later Victorianism and resurging in the literature of the Decadence and Fin de Siècle.

Das Literaturwissenschaftliche Jahrbuch wurde 1926 von Günther Müller gegründet. Peter Berger untersucht anhand der Subjekt-Semantik, wie unsicher gewordene Semantiken auf literarische Texte gewirkt haben. Die im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts problematisch gewordene Semantik des ›starken Subjekts‹ als einem konsistenten, sprach- und handlungsmächtigen Ich, das im Drama lange ein Residuum gefunden hat, wurde ab circa 1890 in einer Reihe von Dramen auf seine Konsequenzen für die Gattung hin befragt. Es zeigt sich, dass diese semantische Verunsicherung neben der Theatermoderne zur großen Vielfalt dramatischer Formen um 1900 beigetragen hat. Zu den 17 untersuchten Texten zählen u.a. Stücke, die das Bewusstsein als Bühnenraum darstellen oder die Gründung theatraler Gemeinschaft an den ›realen‹ wie symbolischen Tod eines ›starken Subjekts‹ auf der Bühne binden. Peter Berger is concerned with the multi-faceted connections between drama and the subject ca. 1890 to 1920. The subject is hereby understood as a semantics that was at the foundation not only of German Idealism but also of the drama in the way it was codified in the German speaking world in the 19th century. When the semantics changed and drama opened to new pieces knowledge the now unstable semantics lead to new ways to produce dramatic texts. The author shows those new ways by analyzing 17 dramas that have been written in the period, emphasizing the big variety in style and quality in which these connections can be seen. It also stresses how developments in theatre and drama together, intertwined with semantic shifts, made modern drama possible.
