Por que publicar um livro sobre Igualdade e Diferença na Escola – um diálogo com professores da Educação Básica? A formação de professores sempre esteve distante das temáticas que pudessem contribuir com a conscientização e análise crítica das demandas sobre inclusão, direitos humanos e as diferenças no contexto da escola e da formação docente. As diferenças, as diferentes culturais e as exclusões sociais foram sempre tratadas, muitas das vezes, como "normais" em relação aos contextos da sociedade que ficaram à margem dos direitos básicos e da sua essência como ser humanos; pessoas com deficiência, surdos, crianças, jovens, negros, mulheres, índios e toda a diversidade que compõem a nossa sociedade e com suas opções política, cultural e religiosa. No Brasil, a grande contradição é ser um país democrático de direito, mas ao mesmo tempo vivenciamos uma sociedade pautada pela exclusão e eliminação do outro. Precisamos construir uma cultura de respeito aos direitos humanos das pessoas, com este trabalho queremos contribuir para o fortalecimento e desenvolvimento de uma educação fundamentada e respalda nos Direitos Humanos, que valorize e respeite as diferenças com um grande objetivo de construir uma sociedade democrática, justa e humana. Uma sociedade onde todos possam ser respeitados em suas diferenças na igualdade e a igualdade na diferença. Somos diferentes mas, ao mesmo tempo, somos iguais. A escola, como espaço privilegiado para a construção e consolidação da cultura de direitos humanos, deve assegurar que os objetivos e as práticas a serem adotados sejam coerentes com os valores e princípios da educação em direitos humanos.

While continually broadcasting the deaths of "illegal immigrants" who have drowned at sea, the majority of mass media incessantly feeds the panic over the "invasion" of Italy by poor immigrants from the Third World. This study is not merely an examination of the familiar limitations of the media, but an investigation of the comprehensive attitude in Italian society of rejecting foreigners who have been transformed into public enemies through a vicious cycle of panic and exclusion. Political dialogue has not proven very aware of the problem of acknowledging the civil rights of the new migrants. The recent cultural rediscovery of the "Italian nation" and the "Italian homeland" - that communal sentiment on which national belonging is based - is not separate from these recent disturbing developments. Not only does this appeal to the "Italian nation" prove weak, but it corresponds to a process of inferiorization of other societies: poorer nations, the underdeveloped regions of Italy itself, and the less wealthy areas in dominant regions. The political left and right both display this disturbing mentality. In this extensively documented, polemical book, Alessandro Dal Lago clearly takes a stand regarding the most profound impulses in Italian society. This study reveals that what is involved in the cultural discussion on migration are the most fundamental parameters and values upon which our democracy rests.
