Excerpt from Discussions in Theology This volume is a Second Edition of the Miscellanies it contains. They have been collected out of Periodicals, in which at different times they were printed. They have been carefully revised, and it is hoped, now appear in a better than their original form. The subjects of them are important, and however imperfectly treated in these small papers, have not been discussed without a deep sense of their value. The author has been induced to prepare the little book which embodies them, by a desire to give whatever of truthfulness and sound teaching may be found in them, more emphasis and more influence than it might otherwise have had. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Salvation The aim of the present work is to present a biblical, historical, and constructive discussion of the Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various Opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend them selves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find some thing in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. The present discussion presupposes a general know ledge Of Biblical Theology and of the History Of Christian Doctrine, such as is furnished by the relevant sections Of my Theology of the New Testament and Professor Fisher's History of Christian Doctrine, earlier volumes of the International Theological Library. Excerpt from Essays Towards a New Theology The titles of the several Essays explain the connection in which they were studied. But, while this is so, I find that Essay II. - where there has had to be produced a sort of rapid sketch of Biblical Theology, from the point of view of eschato logical doctrine - contains much discussion of the outside, or apologetic and critical aspects, of questions, with the heart of which one has been dealing in Essay I. If Essay I. Seems to be too slight in its treatment of certain questions regarding the Gospels, may I hope that Essay II. Will supply its deficiencies? Excerpt from The Gospel History and Its Transmission The ten Lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the spring of this year at the Passmore Edwards Settlement in London as the Jowett Lectures for 1906. I repeated them with very little change for my inaugural course at Cambridge as Norrisian Professor of Divinity, so that it seemed advisable to keep them in lecture form when they came to be printed. It is sometimes supposed that the result of modern historical criticism is to diminish the historical value of the Gospels. My own researches have made me believe that there is a much larger element of genuine history in the Canonical Gospels, than a general view of the tendencies which influenced Christendom during the first century and a half of its existence might have led one to anticipate. Encyclopedia Of Sacred Theology written by Abraham Kuyper and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-24 with Philosophy categories.

Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is the second in a three-volume series. Written by Abraham Kuyper and translated into English by Reverend J. Hendrick Devries, it is a massive book about the history of theology and its place amongst the sciences. This volume does not contain the typical contents of an encyclopedia. Instead of a series of short entries on a variety of topics, Kuyper's book reads much more like a history text. The book is divided into three parts, each of which consists of multiple chapters. The first part is a discussion of the very name of the Theological Encyclopedia, and whether this is an appropriate naming convention to follow. The second part examines the organism of science, and theology's place within the accepted scientific disciplines. The third and final part is a detailed discussion of theology itself, with chapters on the conception, methods and history of the discipline, and more. The book concludes with a brief index of the topics discussed and the proper names referred to. Kuyper's work is extensive and challenging. The book presents an extremely detailed and nuanced discussion of the nature of theology. At more than 700 pages, it is no short work, particularly when one considers that it is only one volume in a three-volume set. Kuyper's Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is an advanced work about the study of theology. It is not a 'light' read, but one that contains an enormous amount of information. For those serious about the study of theology, Kuyper's work cannot be missed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of New England Theology The present work had its origin in a series of lectures prepared for an elective course in Chicago Theological Seminary. The division into lectures, however, has not been retained because a treatment more instructive and better proportioned to the im portance of the several topics, it is thought, may be secured by presenting the subject in a narrative form. The aim of the present work is to trace the New Divinity, formerly so called, in its develop ment through the century between 1730 and 1830, through its Berkshire and Hopkinsian eras, to its final form as New England Theology. Excerpt from History of the Study of Theology, Vol. 1 The history of the study of Theology is Theological Encyclopaedia placed in its historical frame and order. It traces the study of Theology from the beginning until the present time. There is a study of Theology in all the higher religions. This book does not propose to go beyond the Christian religion. It is the history of the study of Christian Theology. It begins, therefore, with the study of Theology by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Christian Theology may be studied with regard either to its contents or to its forms. The study of the contents of Christian Theology in their historic mould belongs to the department of Church History, as the history of the Christian Religion, of Christian Doctrine, of Christian Institutions, and so on. Theological Encyclopaedia has to do only with the forms of Christian Theology, its methods, the organisation of the various departments of which it is composed, and its literature. The history of the study of Christian Theology is a history of its methods, its disciplines, and its literature. Excerpt from An Outline of New Testament Theology This Outline of New Testament Theology was originally prepared for the use of classes in the Hamilton Theological Seminary, and has been repeatedly used in the course of classroom work. It is now offered with diffidence to a wider circle, in the hope that it so summarizes the teachings of the New Testament as to be of some service to students of the Word of God. It will at once be noted that it claims to be only an outline. Consequently conclusions are often given without a statement of the reasons which have led to their acceptance, and all exegetical discussions have been rigidly excluded. This has been required by the condensation indispensable for classroom work, and no less by the author's conception of the scope of the science.
