The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an online, asynchronous mindful-based stress reduction (MBSR) intervention on symptoms of compassion fatigue for medical speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Although there is evidence that modified versions of MBSR programs, such as online-delivery models, can reduce compassion fatigue symptoms among various healthcare providers, the population of speech-language pathology has not been studied previously. In this ABA, single subject research design, a recruitment of seven participants completed and eight-week online, asynchronous mindfulness-based stress reduction program. Participants were full-time employed medical speech-language pathologists holding Certificate of Clinical Competence and state licensure and reported average to high levels of perceived stress. The online, asynchronous MBSR program consisted of one to two-hour weekly modules on a given topic of mindfulness that was accessed online at the leisure of the participant and included practice application activities. Weekly measurements of compassion fatigue symptoms were collected via the Professional Quality of Life Scale, version 5 (ProQOL-5). Results suggested an online, asynchronous MBSR program was effective at reducing compassion fatigue symptoms of both burnout and secondary traumatic stress for medical SLPs. These findings contribute to the body of literature investigating remediation strategies for various healthcare providers experiencing compassion fatigue.

Objective: This investigation aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) on perceived stress and trait mindfulness. Participants were licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who worked full-time in healthcare and reported experiencing moderate levels of stress. Method: This investigation utilized a single-subject, A-B-A experimental design. Three participants completed this virtual, asynchronous investigation. Participants used a commercially available mobile application (app) to complete one short, guided meditation each day for 15 days. Each session was between 6-17 minutes long. The primary dependent variable, perceived stress, was measured after every third mindfulness session, using the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). The secondary dependent variable, trait mindfulness, was measured before and after the investigation phase using the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS). Results: All three participants demonstrated statistically significant reductions in perceived stress compared to their baseline scores. When comparing pre- and post-test mindfulness scores, two participants demonstrated a positive change in trait mindfulness. Conclusion: A 15-day mindfulness-based intervention was effective in reducing perceived levels of stress in SLPs working in healthcare. These findings illustrate that brief MBIs might be a potential solution to the growing problem of chronic stress experienced by healthcare workers.

Stress has become one of the major challenges of modern society, especially within the working population, causing significant costs and personal problems. However, the range of prevention and treatment is not at all proportionate to the needs of the public. Internet provides new options for broad dissemination and a growing body of evidence suggest that internet-based interventions for stress could be effective. However, few studies have examined the efficacy in clinical samples or how participants experience these new treatment delivery formats. Further, only a limited number of studies have evaluated the efficacy of work-focused stress interventions on work-related outcomes (e.g., absenteeism), and if recovery has the potential in stress-prevention. In the present thesis, internet-based cognitive behavioural stress interventions (iCBT), designed to reduce symptoms of stress and increase recovery and workparticipation among 117 managers and 260 employees, were evaluated in three randomized controlled trials (Study I, III and IV) and a qualitative study (Study II). Results of Study I and III indicate that the iCBT for managers and employees with stress-related disorders was effective in reducing symptoms of chronic stress. In Study III effects on work-related outcomes, e.g., work ability and absenteeism, were only seen in the work-focused iCBT. In Study II, participants found the work-focused iCBT to be accessible and feasible and reported positive experiences on stress and well-being in both life and at work. Finally, preliminary results in Study IV suggest that recovery experiences, an important protective factor against chronic stress, could be improved by a brief internet-based recovery intervention. In conclusion, if implemented, these relatively brief and accessible interventions could be a feasible way to increase access to treatment and learning distressed employees and others how to prevent and recover from stress-related disorders.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine defines meditation as a “mind-body” method. This category of complementary and alternative medicine includes interventions that employ a variety of techniques that facilitate the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. In meditation, a person learns to focus attention. Some forms of meditation instruct the student to become mindful of thoughts, feelings, and sensations, and to observe them in a nonjudgmental way. Many believe this practice evokes a state of greater calmness, physical relaxation, and psychological balance. Many people use meditation to treat stress and stress-related conditions, as well as to promote general health. A number of hospitals and programs offer courses in meditation to patients seeking alternative or additional methods to relieve symptoms or to promote health. Meditation training programs vary in several ways, including the emphasis on religion or spirituality, the type of mental activity promoted, the nature and amount of training, the use of an instructor, and the qualifications of an instructor, which may all affect the level and nature of the meditative skills learned. Some meditative techniques are integrated into a broader alternative approach that includes dietary and/or movement therapies (e.g., ayurveda or yoga). Researchers have categorized meditative techniques as emphasizing “mindfulness,” “concentration,” and “automatic self-transcendence.” Popular techniques such as transcendental meditation (TM) emphasize the use of a mantra in such a way that one “transcends” to an effortless state where there is no focused attention. Other popular techniques, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), are classified as “mindfulness” and emphasize training in present-focused awareness. Uncertainty remains about the extent to which these distinctions actually influence psychosocial stress outcomes. Researchers have postulated that meditation programs may affect a range of outcomes related to psychological stress and well-being. The objectives of this systematic review are to evaluate the effects of meditation programs on affect, attention, and health-related behaviors affected by stress, pain, and weight among people with a medical or psychiatric condition in RCTs with appropriate comparators. This report reviews the efficacy of meditation programs on psychological stress and well-being among those with a clinical condition. The Key Questions are as follows: Key Question 1. What are the efficacy and harms of meditation programs on negative affect (e.g., anxiety, stress) and positive affect (e.g., well-being) among those with a clinical condition (medical or psychiatric)? Key Question 2. What are the efficacy and harms of meditation programs on attention among those with a clinical condition (medical or psychiatric)? Key Question 3. Student wellbeing is foundational to academic success. One recent survey of postsecondary educators found that nearly 80 percent believed emotional wellbeing is a "very" or "extremely" important factor in student success. Studies have found the dropout rates for students with a diagnosed mental health problem range from 43 percent to as high as 86 percent. While dealing with stress is a normal part of life, for some students, stress can adversely affect their physical, emotional, and psychological health, particularly given that adolescence and early adulthood are when most mental illnesses are first manifested. In addition to students who may develop mental health challenges during their time in postsecondary education, many students arrive on campus with a mental health problem or having experienced significant trauma in their lives, which can also negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. The nation's institutions of higher education are seeing increasing levels of mental illness, substance use and other forms of emotional distress among their students. Some of the problematic trends have been ongoing for decades. Some have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic consequences. Some are the result of long-festering systemic racism in almost every sphere of American life that are becoming more widely acknowledged throughout society and must, at last, be addressed. Mental Health, Substance Use, and Wellbeing in Higher Education lays out a variety of possible strategies and approaches to meet increasing demand for mental health and substance use services, based on the available evidence on the nature of the issues and what works in various situations.
