Excerpt from Elizabethan Drama Luckily the clue to which the beginner generally trusts is on the Whole the best. Elizabethan drama centres in Shakespeare, not merely for the general reader, but also for the professional student. Shake speare seems to have tried nearly every form or plan suggested by his predecessors and given it in many cases its supreme expression. Moreover, to an extent which was at one time greatly under-estimated, his successors recognized his pre - eminence and started from his achievement. Excerpt from Studies in the Elizabethan Drama But unless we adopt the surely untenable theory that the Sonnets, with their passionate sincerity of utterance, the curiously individual note of their complex harmonies, are merely passion according to the Italian Opera, is it not possible that the dark woman, the woman coloured ill, of whom they show us such significant hints of outline, may have turned his thoughts in the direction of Plutarch's story of Antony and Cleopatra? It is possible; and if so, Shakespeare must have felt a singular satisfaction in putting thus to use an experience bought so sorrowfully, with so much expense of spirit; must have felt that he was repaid, more than repaid. Excerpt from The Relations of Shirley's Plays to the Elizabethan Drama I have based my study upon the gifford-dyce edition. The early quartos and duodecimos of Shirley's plays are generally so scarce as to preclude their use by many schol ars; and as my treatment of the plays has had to do chiefly with the action and but little with the text itself, I have thought it best to use and to refer to the more accessible (though unsatisfactory) collected edition. I wish to call attention to the fact that in my citations of acts and scenes I have referred to the numbers at their beginnings, and not to those at the tops of the respective pages which are often incorrect. Excerpt from The Presentation of Time in the Elizabethan Drama The double-time scheme is a method of dealing with the dramatic element of time whereby two im pressions are given simultaneously - one of swiftness and one of slowness; by one series of allusions the action seems to drive ahead furiously, while by ao other series the lapse of weeks and months is ex pressed. Such a device involves a presentation of events under two aspects, one hastening the action to produce excitement and tension, the other pro longing the action, sometimes to the extent of por fraying within the limits of the drama the changes in emotions and motives belonging to a lifetime. This illusory treatment of time has peculiar advan tages, by which it is possible to impose an effect of continuity and concentration upon a plot requiring for its accomplishment the lapse of a long period of time. Excerpt from John Webster the Elizabethan Drama I have tried to write a small book about John Webster. That is to say, I have tried to say the truth about him, as much of it as is necessary to enable anyone who reads him to understand him. I have not tried to explain him entirely to anyone who has not read him, though I hope that any person in that condition may get a rough idea of him from this book. Excerpt from The Villain as Hero in Elizabethan Tragedy Elizabethan drama is a term rather loosely used to cover the plays produced between the accession of Elizabeth, in 1558, and the restoration of Charles II in 1660. The plays of this period are, as every student knows, of very mixed type and unequal value, including as they do the sacred drama of national origin, the Latin imitations of Plautus and Seneca, the masterpieces of Shakespeare, and the decadent drama immediately preceding the closing of the theatres. It was towards the end of the sixteenth century that the Moral plays, performed chiefly for the edification and amusement of the common people, and the stiff imitations of Classical plays, performed chiefly at court began to give way before a new movement drawmg nourishment from both, but distinctly different from either the Romantic Drama, the drama of passion, which was the crown and flower of Elizabethan dramatic art, and of which Shakespeare is the great exemplar. Disguise Plots In Elizabethan Drama written by Victor Oscar Freeburg and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-30 with Drama categories.

Excerpt from Disguise Plots in Elizabethan Drama: A Study in Stage Tradition In this book the dramatic construction and stage representation of the plays of Shakespeare and his brother playwrights have been inspected from a new angle of observation; and it is believed that the results obtained may help the reader to understand more completely the practice of Elizabethan playwrights, the nature of their medium, and the tastes of their audience. It is hoped that the illustrative significance of the four hundred and twenty-five plots here discussed may in some measure palliate the offense of many omissions. It should perhaps be explained that certain disguise situations, even though occurring in well-known plays, have been deliberately omitted in favor of other situations which served better to illustrate the point being made. Incidentally, this comparative study of Elizabethan plays in a new alignment has revealed a number of inter-relations which are here discussed for the first time. I take pleasure in expressing my obligation to Doctor Orie L. Hatcher of Bryn Mawr College, who suggested the subject and has offered many constructive criticisms of this work; to Doctor Winifred Smith of Vassar College, who kindly loaned me her translations of the commedie dell' arte in the Scala collection; and to Miss Vera Parsons for pointing out a great many disguise plots in Italian novelle. To Professor Brander Matthews and to Professor G. C. D. Odell, who have read the manuscript, I am greatly indebted for careful and illuminating criticisms. Excerpt from Shakespeare and His Day: A Study of the Topical Element in Shakespeare and in the Elizabethan Drama IN writing the following pages an attempt has been made to extract from the Elizabethan drama something of Elizabethan life: There is no field perhaps that could offer a wealthier fund of Elizabethan remains than the contemporary drama. Grey piles stand here and there to remind one of the past but more eloquent than masonry is the literature of that time, and the Spirit it enshrines is, after all, the finest link with those days. Excerpt from The Shakespeare Symphony: An Introduction to the Ethics of the Elizabethan Drama I have no wish to impose any unjust inferences on these facts, certainties being so numerous that there is happily no necessity to patch them with surmises. For the time being I content myself with a brief and essential statement of the paradox, entrusting its final solution to the future. At whatever times I refer to the dramatists I would be understood to mean 50mg of them. Much of the Elizabethan Drama is avowedly patchwork. It is customary to find several authors' names combined on the same title page, and few things are more bewildering than the manner in which trash and sublimity rub shoulders with each other. She does not elope with a prodigal debtor, but she releases two prisoners from her father's house, whose capture and confinement were appar ently expected to yield profit. Eventually she marries one of these young men, and thus makes an appreciable advance toward the completion of the earlier of the two chief usurer prodigal plots.
