Part One provides information on the advantages and considerations of artificial insemination, basic livestock genetics, the anatomy and reproductive processes of the cow and bull, and semen collection methods. It relates statistics on AI usage and general information about NAAB and CSS. Part Two deals with semen characteristics, including evaluation, processing, and extension; freezing and cryogenic storage; and care of the refrigerator unit. The various tests for semen quality are discussed in detail as is custom selection of semen. Part Three explains insemination techniques for dairy and beef cattle, inseminator training, pregnancy determination in cattle, conception rates, and breeding problems. The exercise on "Embryo Transfer and Related Practices" explains the advances and techniques involved in the field. Part Four includes an overview of sire selection, sire health, sire management, AI organization, and career opportunities. Part Five explains the use and techniques for artificial insemination in dairy goats and other farm animals. For herd operators and persons involved in genetic development—of particular use to people interested in livestock improvement. Egg transfer was first performed in 1890, but for half a century it received scant attention. However, since 1950 the technique has become increasingly widely used - in the laboratory for fundamental studies and more recently in practice, both veterinary and medical, to boost reproductive potential of genetically superior cattle and to overcome sterility due to impaired rubal function in women. As a result, a considerable body of literature has accumulated, totaling well in excess of a thousand references. But till now there has not been a single comprehensive text devoted solely to this subject. The present work was designed to meet that need at a time when the field is fast expanding with new techniques and approaches constantly being evolved. One need only cite the tremendous rate of progress in human egg transfer in the last three years. The work embraces laboratory and farm animals and primates, including man, altogether representing a total of 16 species.

This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar held in Abano Terme, Italy on November 13 - 17, 1978, under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities, as part of the EEC programme of co-ordination of research on improvement of beef production. The programme was drawn up by a working group of specialists in beef production with the following composition: Dr. J. Thomas Belgium Denmark Prof. A. Neimann-S0rensen Dr. B. Vissac France Dr. J. R. Sreenan Ireland Prof. M. Bonsembiante Italy Dr. P. Susmel Italy Ir. H. De Boer The Netherlands Prof. J. C. Bowman UK Prof. W. F. Raymond UK Mr. I. L. Mason FAD Dr. J. C. Tayler Temporary appointment in CEC Dr. P. L'Hermite CEC The working group held one full meeting in Brussels in February 1978. The rest of the planning for the meeting was done by small group meetings and by correspondence. There were several interesting features to the seminar which contributed to its success. First, it was interdisciplinary and enabled new contacts to be developed between those concerned with beef technology and those concerned with land use. Second. different types of activity - plenary lectures. small group discussions. poster displays. technical visits and preparation of written conclusions agreed by the meeting - were included in the programme. Third, specific recommendations for future research priorities were established during the seminar.
