This book contributes to overcoming the deficit in research on emotions in foreign language learning in the domain of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in both traditional and virtual settings. The authors divide emotions into positive (i.e., enjoyment and curiosity) and negative (i.e., boredom and language anxiety) and explore their role in L2 teaching and learning in CALL environments from theoretical, empirical and pedagogical perspectives. The book begins with a theoretical overview of selected issues concerning positive and negative emotions and surveys the studies that have dealt with this issue in L2 learning in conventional settings and CALL. The empirical part of the book is devoted to a research project which explores the experience of positive and negative emotions in learning English in the virtual world Second Life, the relationships of the emotions in question and factors influencing them. The book concludes by recommending a selection of practices which can help maximize the positive emotions and minimize the negative emotions in foreign language learning in CALL environments. This is an important and illuminating read for students and scholars of applied linguistics, second language education and educational technology who are interested in CALL and in incorporating VW/VR-based language learning programs into their studies and teaching.

This book highlights the roles of several individual difference (ID) variables on the language learning process, exploring them from both the students’ and the teachers’ perspectives. It presents the results of a large-scale, mixed-methods investigation which was conducted with secondary school pupils and their teachers in Hungary. The quantitative questionnaire data is used to analyze the English language learners’ motivation, autonomy and self-efficacy beliefs, and to examine the relationships between these and a wide range of positive and negative emotions. The qualitative data, consisting of interviews with teachers, gives voice not only to an understanding of student-related ID variables but also to teachers’ reflections on their own cognitive, affective and behavioral processes. Taken together, the contrastive analysis of these two datasets yields interactional results that provide fresh insights into the language learning process and practical classroom applications.

This book seeks to understand how language teachers regulate and use their emotions to best serve themselves and their students. It furthers research in the field by providing an in-depth theoretical discussion of emotion regulation alongside a comprehensive exploration in Japan. The study at the heart of the book focuses on three important features: the strategies language teachers employ to regulate their emotions, the motives that they regulate in aid of, and the various contextual factors shaping their strategy and motive decision-making. The findings reveal numerous ways that language teacher emotion regulation is empowered and constrained by identities, notions of good practice, critical experiences and external pressures. The book provides theoretical models of emotion regulation alongside recommendations for researchers, trainers and teachers who are interested in understanding more about the emotional dimension of the language classroom.

Loving Pedagogy In Second And Foreign Language Education written by Ali Derakhshan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-07-30 with Education categories.
This book provides a vivid and comprehensive picture of loving pedagogy in second language (L2) education. It focuses on the theoretical and empirical foundations of loving pedagogy to set the ground for researching its ecological systems and measurement. Foreword, written by Elisabeth Vanderheiden, introduces pedagogical love as a transformative approach in education during times of global crises and neoliberal shifts. It frames pedagogical love not merely as relational warmth but as an ethical stance and political project that challenges technocratic educational paradigms. The first chapter outlines the background, significance, purpose, and critical rationale for an empirical study to which the whole book is dedicated. The second chapter deals with the theoretical underpinnings of this study, especially affective pedagogy, positive psychology, existential positive psychology, rhetorical/relational goal theory, broaden-and-build theory, PERMA model, and attachment theory, followed by a comprehensive review of related empirical studies. The third chapter presents the design and methodology of the study, while chapter four presents and discusses quantitative and qualitative outcomes. Chapter five explains the conclusions drawn from the results and presents pedagogical implications and directions for future research in the field of SLA. Afterword, written by Satu Uusiautti, considers loving pedagogy the foundation of positive education in the future. This book is intended for scholars and researchers in the field of second language acquisition and pedagogy, and more generally, those in applied linguistics and positive psychology.

Complexity In Second Language Study Emotions written by Richard J. Sampson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-14 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book offers a socially situated view of the emergence of emotionality for additional language (L2) learners in classroom interaction in Japan. Grounded in a complexity perspective, the author argues that emotions need to be studied as they are dynamically experienced and understood in all of their multidimensional colors by individuals (in interaction). Via practitioner research, Sampson applies a small-lens focus, interweaving experiential and discursive data, offering possibilities for exploring, interpreting and representing the lived experience of L2 study emotions in a more holistic yet detailed, social yet individual fashion. Amidst the currently expanding interest in L2 study emotions, the book presents a strong case for the benefits of locating interpretations of the emergence of L2 study emotions back into situated, dynamic, social context. Sampson’s work will be of interest to students and researchers in second language acquisition and L2 learning psychology.

The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Individual Differences provides a thorough, in-depth discussion of the theory, research, and pedagogy pertaining to the role individual difference (ID) factors play in second language acquisition (SLA). It goes beyond the traditional repertoire and includes 32 chapters covering a full spectrum of topics on learners’ cognitive, conative, affective, and demographic/sociocultural variation. The volume examines IDs from two perspectives: one is how each ID variable is associated with learning behaviors, processes, and outcomes; the other is how each domain of SLA, such as vocabulary or reading, is affected by clusters of ID variables. The volume also includes a section on the common methods used in ID research, including data elicitation instruments such as surveys, interviews, and psychometric testing, as well as methods of data analysis such as structural equation modeling. The book is a must-read for any second language researcher or applied linguist interested in investigating the effects of IDs on language learning, and for any educator interested in taking account of learners’ individual differences to maximize the effects of second language instruction.
