First published in 2001. The classical Fourier transform is one of the most widely used mathematical tools in engineering. However, few engineers know that extensions of harmonic analysis to functions on groups holds great potential for solving problems in robotics, image analysis, mechanics, and other areas. For those that may be aware of its potential value, there is still no place they can turn to for a clear presentation of the background they need to apply the concept to engineering problems. Engineering Applications of Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis brings this powerful tool to the engineering world. Written specifically for engineers and computer scientists, it offers a practical treatment of harmonic analysis in the context of particular Lie groups (rotation and Euclidean motion). It presents only a limited number of proofs, focusing instead on providing a review of the fundamental mathematical results unknown to most engineers and detailed discussions of specific applications. Advances in pure mathematics can lead to very tangible advances in engineering, but only if they are available and accessible to engineers. Engineering Applications of Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis provides the means for adding this valuable and effective technique to the engineer's toolbox.

Although the Fourier transform is among engineering's most widely used mathematical tools, few engineers realize that the extension of harmonic analysis to functions on groups holds great potential for solving problems in robotics, image analysis, mechanics, and other areas. This self-contained approach, geared toward readers with a standard background in engineering mathematics, explores the widest possible range of applications to fields such as robotics, mechanics, tomography, sensor calibration, estimation and control, liquid crystal analysis, and conformational statistics of macromolecules. Harmonic analysis is explored in terms of particular Lie groups, and the text deals with only a limited number of proofs, focusing instead on specific applications and fundamental mathematical results. Forming a bridge between pure mathematics and the challenges of modern engineering, this updated and expanded volume offers a concrete, accessible treatment that places the general theory in the context of specific groups.

The fusion of algebra, analysis and geometry, and their application to real world problems, have been dominant themes underlying mathematics for over a century. Geometric algebras, introduced and classified by Clifford in the late 19th century, have played a prominent role in this effort, as seen in the mathematical work of Cartan, Brauer, Weyl, Chevelley, Atiyah, and Bott, and in applications to physics in the work of Pauli, Dirac and others. One of the most important applications of geometric algebras to geometry is to the representation of groups of Euclidean and Minkowski rotations. This aspect and its direct relation to robotics and vision will be discussed in several chapters of this multi-authored textbook, which resulted from the ASI meeting. Moreover, group theory, beginning with the work of Burnside, Frobenius and Schur, has been influenced by even more general problems. As a result, general group actions have provided the setting for powerful methods within group theory and for the use of groups in applications to physics, chemistry, molecular biology, and signal processing. These aspects, too, will be covered in detail. With the rapidly growing importance of, and ever expanding conceptual and computational demands on signal and image processing in remote sensing, computer vision, medical image processing, and biological signal processing, and on neural and quantum computing, geometric algebras, and computational group harmonic analysis, the topics of the book have emerged as key tools. The list of authors includes many of the world's leading experts in the development of new algebraic modeling and signal representation methodologies, novel Fourier-based and geometric transforms, and computational algorithms required for realizing the potential of these new application fields.

Representation Discovery Using Harmonic Analysis written by Sridhar Mahadevan and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-31 with Computers categories.
Representations are at the heart of artificial intelligence (AI). This book is devoted to the problem of representation discovery: how can an intelligent system construct representations from its experience? Representation discovery re-parameterizes the state space - prior to the application of information retrieval, machine learning, or optimization techniques - facilitating later inference processes by constructing new task-specific bases adapted to the state space geometry. This book presents a general approach to representation discovery using the framework of harmonic analysis, in particular Fourier and wavelet analysis. Biometric compression methods, the compact disc, the computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner in medicine, JPEG compression, and spectral analysis of time-series data are among the many applications of classical Fourier and wavelet analysis. A central goal of this book is to show that these analytical tools can be generalized from their usual setting in (infinite-dimensional) Euclidean spaces to discrete (finite-dimensional) spaces typically studied in many subfields of AI. Generalizing harmonic analysis to discrete spaces poses many challenges: a discrete representation of the space must be adaptively acquired; basis functions are not pre-defined, but rather must be constructed. Algorithms for efficiently computing and representing bases require dealing with the curse of dimensionality. However, the benefits can outweigh the costs, since the extracted basis functions outperform parametric bases as they often reflect the irregular shape of a particular state space. Case studies from computer graphics, information retrieval, machine learning, and state space planning are used to illustrate the benefits of the proposed framework, and the challenges that remain to be addressed. Representation discovery is an actively developing field, and the author hopes this book will encourage other researchers to explore this exciting area of research. Table of Contents: Overview / Vector Spaces / Fourier Bases on Graphs / Multiscale Bases on Graphs / Scaling to Large Spaces / Case Study: State-Space Planning / Case Study: Computer Graphics / Case Study: Natural Language / Future Directions

This book includes extended versions of the selected papers from VISIGRAPP 2009, the International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, during February 5–8, 2009 and organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). VISIGRAPP comprises three component conferences, namely, the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP), the International Conference on Computer Graphics Theory and Applications (GRAPP), and the International Conference on Imaging Theory and Applications (IMAGAPP). VISIGRAPP received a total of 422 paper submissions from more than 50 co- tries. From these, and after a rigorous double-blind evaluation method, 72 papers were published as full papers. These figures show that this conference is now an - tablished venue for researchers in the broad fields of computer vision, computer graphics and image analysis. From the full papers, 25 were selected for inclusion in this book. The selection process was based on the scores assigned by the Program Committee reviewers as well as the Session Chairs. After selection, the papers were further revised and extended by the authors. Our gratitude goes to all contributors and referees, without whom this book would not have been possible.

Joseph Fourier 250th Birthday written by Frédéric Barbaresco and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-28 with Science categories.
For the 250th birthday of Joseph Fourier, born in 1768 in Auxerre, France, this MDPI Special Issue will explore modern topics related to Fourier Analysis and Heat Equation. Modern developments of Fourier analysis during the 20th century have explored generalizations of Fourier and Fourier–Plancherel formula for non-commutative harmonic analysis, applied to locally-compact, non-Abelian groups. In parallel, the theory of coherent states and wavelets has been generalized over Lie groups. One should add the developments, over the last 30 years, of the applications of harmonic analysis to the description of the fascinating world of aperiodic structures in condensed matter physics. The notions of model sets, introduced by Y. Meyer, and of almost periodic functions, have revealed themselves to be extremely fruitful in this domain of natural sciences. The name of Joseph Fourier is also inseparable from the study of the mathematics of heat. Modern research on heat equations explores the extension of the classical diffusion equation on Riemannian, sub-Riemannian manifolds, and Lie groups. In parallel, in geometric mechanics, Jean-Marie Souriau interpreted the temperature vector of Planck as a space-time vector, obtaining, in this way, a phenomenological model of continuous media, which presents some interesting properties. One last comment concerns the fundamental contributions of Fourier analysis to quantum physics: Quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. The content of this Special Issue will highlight papers exploring non-commutative Fourier harmonic analysis, spectral properties of aperiodic order, the hypoelliptic heat equation, and the relativistic heat equation in the context of Information Theory and Geometric Science of Information.

'This is a book to be read and worked with. For a beginning graduate student, this can be a valuable experience which at some points in fact leads up to recent research. For such a reader there is also historical information included and many comments aiming at an overview. It is inspiring and original how old material is combined and mixed with new material. There is always something unexpected included in each chapter, which one is thankful to see explained in this context and not only in research papers which are more difficult to access.'Mathematical Reviews ClippingsThe book features new directions in analysis, with an emphasis on Hilbert space, mathematical physics, and stochastic processes. We interpret 'non-commutative analysis' broadly to include representations of non-Abelian groups, and non-Abelian algebras; emphasis on Lie groups and operator algebras (C* algebras and von Neumann algebras.)A second theme is commutative and non-commutative harmonic analysis, spectral theory, operator theory and their applications. The list of topics includes shift invariant spaces, group action in differential geometry, and frame theory (over-complete bases) and their applications to engineering (signal processing and multiplexing), projective multi-resolutions, and free probability algebras. The book serves as an accessible introduction, offering a timeless presentation, attractive and accessible to students, both in mathematics and in neighboring fields.
