Perhaps the fundamental question in CSR is: What are the responsibilities of businesses and business leadership to society? Moreover, do the responsibilities of business change in times of social and political turmoil? The chapters in this book tackle several aspects of these questions with chapters on business and politics, the environment, technology, and immigration; along with broader questions about leadership, governance, and the very nature of CSR.

This illuminating and practical collection of essays addresses the increasingly important topics of corporate ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability in the context of effective global business strategies. Instead of condemning business, or exhorting corporate leaders to "do good," the authors deal with the "hot button" issues of our time in a cool and rational manner, seeing them as opportunities rather than as problems. As the authors illustrate, there is no necessary trade-off between business leaders doing the right thing, on one hand, and the profitable thing, on the other. They demonstrate that ethics is not peripheral, or in addition to, the central concerns of business. To the contrary, ethics and good citizenship are at the heart of all good business strategies, decisions, and organizational cultures. These essays offer useful examples of how executives can create strategies and cultures that are, both and at the same time, ethical and effective--the essence of GOOD BUSINESS. Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1.4, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: Everyone has the entitlement to privacy whether he/she is a public figure or a business leader. However, public life demands that individuals at the helm of leadership conceptualize certain things that guide their behaviour both in public and private situations. Becoming a corporate leader demands observing public service ethics, this in turn demands that individuals give public interest priority to shape their behaviours whether they are executing private or public life. It is not always conceivable that the ethical behaviour of leaders in their personal lives automatically reflect their ethical behaviour as business leaders. It is this conviction that makes it meaningful for individuals to have separate private and public lives. Usually, the image individuals volunteer to represent them in public might be hard to extend to private lives. Too often, the desire to improve business leadership has made it tempting to spy on individuals’ private lives to validate one’s authenticity to ethical leadership. This in essence stipulates that leaders should not take leave of personal ethics that makes them who they are even in private. Within the leadership principles, keeping to high ideals cherished in business leadership is the best way to carry one’s self whether in private or public space.

Against the all-too-familiar backdrop of corporate malfeasance, scandal in our religious institutions, political chicanery to serve ulterior motives, and constant reminders of the corruptive influence of power, For the Common Good showcases the insights, reflections, and recommendations of some of today's most forward-thinking and inspiring leaders, applying their expertise in fields such as ecology, education, and conflict resolution. Today's challenges test leaders to their very core, and require a fundamentally new kind of leadership committed to the greater good of society. From Nobel Prize winner, John Hume, to Leader-to-Leader Institute Chair, Frances Hesselbein, Harvard University's Howard Gardner to President Jimmy Carter, the contributors argue that because individuals, institutions, and societies are now so profoundly connected and inter-related, every decision of consequence has a ripple effect. Leaders of all stripes, including corporate executives, politicians, social activists, scientists, and educators, must display courage, integrity, humility, and the wherewithal to consider the long-term impact of their decisions and actions; most importantly, they must engage in dialogue and recognize that creative solutions to complex problems require collaboration. The result is a provocative and multi-dimensional exploration of leadership in troubled and troubling times—but with a hopeful note that individuals and organizations will rise to the challenges.

Traditionally people have ran away with the notion that business and ethics are oxymorons. This means that business and ethics are antagonistic. The glitch is people believe that business is often characterized by unethical acts such as bribery, soliciting insider information, gifting with strings attached and turning a blind eye to corrupt acts. But can we say that we should give up on business ethics? Who is to say? Is it right to say that the business-ethics debacle is over? It is true that we cannot eliminate unethical acts completely in any business. This is simply because ethical acts frequently have everything to do with an individual’s expectations and what is important to them. Sometimes these factors are not self-evident and this is what makes ethics quite a difficult aspect. People do not always put their aims, motives, hopes and needs clearly on the table for us to understand and digest. The ethical decision is often clouded in these cases.
