This book explores the issue of research methods in interlanguage pragmatics. Particularly, it examines the task effect of two different elicitation instruments, namely open role-plays and interactive written discourse completion tasks/tests (DCTs), and the potential of retrospective verbal reports in combination with the aforementioned instruments. The distinguishing feature of the study is using two elicitation methods which are designed from an interactive perspective. Findings from this study indicate that the interactive nature of the instruments seems to positively affect participants' elicitation of apologies since the quantity and the quality of the data collected exhibits a similar pattern across the two research methods. Furthermore, in this study, retrospective verbal reports appear to be instrumental in gathering information about participants' pragmatic production. Finally, the book ends with a discussion of some future research directions in the field of pragmatic testing.

The spread and globalisation of English has proved to be of interest in the study of diverse linguistic phenomena. From a methodological perspective, the study of Englishes poses a number of challenges, and attempts have been made to address these in corpus linguistics, sociolinguistic fieldwork and variationist studies. As such, this volume contributes to this increasingly fashionable, but still somewhat under-explored field of research by drawing together ideas from different frameworks and approaches dealing with English today. The different chapters reflect current trends in English linguistics research, and can be characterized broadly in terms of the study of the different diatopic and diastratic varieties of English, and the adoption of various theoretical and methodological perspectives. The chapters deal with the globalisation of English in itself and with the origin, development and status of varieties of English, often seen as a testing ground for different research traditions, including typological linguistics, second language acquisition, contact linguistics and sociolinguistics.

Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies are the three main research areas within Philology. Scientific production, such as conferences and journals, has tended towards specialization, and has been traditionally classified according to separate disciplines and languages. However, this volume offers a holistic view of the wide area of Philology, therefore allowing the permeability of the three areas mentioned above. As such, this book shows that the line that separates Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies is actually very thin. This volume is composed of a miscellanea of philological studies dealing with various trends in Modern Language research. It looks at three languages in particular: Spanish, English and French, with a special relevance to the first two.

This volume brings an international perspective to language skills – an area of importance to both theorists and practitioners in all contexts of language teaching and learning. The twenty-seven chapters included here are arranged into six sections devoted to fundamental background issues, spoken interaction, perception of speech sounds and production skills, reading contexts and purposes, writing challenges for advanced learners, and technology and language skills. Explored themes range from the conceptualization of language as skill and the development of L2 skills in communicative and intercultural approaches, through challenges in teaching specific skills and their components, to the consideration of the possibilities and limitations of the use of modern technology in assisting students in skill acquisition. The volume’s contributors point to the multiaspectuality of the process of developing language skills with reference to different age groups, diverse educational and social contexts, as well as instructional activities focusing on isolated and integrated skills. The book also includes original empirical studies concerning learning, teaching, and testing numerous aspects of language skills in L2 attainment. The book will be of interest to researchers, classroom teachers, and specialists in language education, philology and applied linguistics, as well as to graduate students involved in the study of language skills acquisition and instruction.
