Language impairment (LI) is a disorder in which an individual's ability to use language and/or understand language is impacted. This difficulty with language often impacts social communication and interactions, especially in young children with LI. This case series sought to determine the efficacy of a behavioral sequence strategy intervention, used in previous research (Beilinson & Olswang, 2003), for the purposes of increasing initiation of play and social communication and interaction skills of preschool children with LI. Participants included four preschool children, ages three-years to six-years old, who were enrolled in a summer speech and language improvement program at California State University San Marcos. All participants were observed to have difficulty with receptive and expressive language as well as language for social purposes. This research study's intervention program involved a group treatment of the behavior strategy sequence to participants and observational measures to evaluate use and generalization of taught behaviors as well as participant's ability to utilize the behavioral sequence for the successful initiation of play with peers. Results showed that each participant was able to show a trend toward positive change in different behaviors measured, some of which reached statistically significant levels. All participants exhibited positive changes that were appropriate for their individual initial skill set, developmental level, and age. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were completed. These findings implicate the use of this behavior strategy sequence intervention to improve social communication and play interactions of young children with LI.

Young Children’s Play: Development, Disabilities, and Diversity is an accessible, comprehensive introduction to play and development from birth to age 8 years that introduces readers to various play types and strategies and helps them determine when intervention might be needed. Skillfully addressing both typically developing children and those with special needs in a single volume, this book covers dramatic play, blocks, games, motor play, artistic play, and non-traditional play forms, such as humor, rough and tumble play, and more. Designed to support contemporary classrooms, this text deliberately interweaves practical strategies for understanding and supporting the play of children with specific disabilities (e.g. autism, Down syndrome, or physically challenging conditions) and those of diverse cultural backgrounds into every chapter. In sections divided by age group, Trawick-Smith explores strategies for engaging children with specific special needs, multicultural backgrounds, and incorporating adult–child play and play intervention. Emphasizing diversity in play behaviors, each chapter includes vignettes featuring children’s play and teacher interactions in classrooms to illustrate core concepts in action. Filled with research-based applications for professional practice, this text is an essential resource for students of early childhood and special education, as well as teachers and coaches supporting early grades or inclusive classrooms.

This book examines a group-based adaptation of the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) designed for use with preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It describes the principles and procedures of the Group-Based Early Start Denver Model (G-ESDM) and provides practical and empirical guidelines for implementing effective, affordable programs across public healthcare and educational settings. Chapters offer rationales and strategies for designing and evaluating interventions, building interdisciplinary teams, and organizing learning spaces to engage student interest. Examples discuss the social interactions in groups that provide opportunities for learning, improving interpersonal skills, and reducing problem behaviors. In addition, the book offers ideas for retooling teaching strategies when an individual child lags behind the rest of the group. Featured topics include: Creating treatment objectives in the G-ESDM. Setting up the G-ESDM team and learning environment. Development of the G-ESDM classroom curriculum. Practical tools such as decision-making trees, teaching templates, and fidelity systems. Facilitating learning through peer interactions and social participation. Implementing the Group-Based Early Start Denver Model for Preschoolers with Autism is a must-have resource for clinicians and practitioners as well as researchers, professors, and graduate students in the fields of child and school psychology, behavioral therapy, and social work along with psychiatry, pediatrics, and educational and healthcare policy.
