Linked with a higher risk of life threatening illnesses, obesity in the United States has become an epidemic, with a prevalence rate of overweight and obese adults of nearly 68%. Obesity rates have accelerated over the past two decades and one crucial developmental period for weight gain is among emerging adults attending college. Using an explanatory mixed-method design, this study examined contributing factors to weight gain among college students, including eliciting university stakeholders' perceptions of supports and barriers to exercising and healthy eating among students. Data collection for the quantitative phase of the study consisted of two waves, baseline and 2-year follow-up. Students completed psychosocial and anthropometric measures (height, weight, and body fat percentage). Data collected for the qualitative phase of the study consisted of key informant interviews with university administrators (n=15) and seven student focus groups (n=34 students). Qualitative analyses were conducted with NVivo software and multiple coders, using a grounded theory approach to elicit major themes. Students gained 1.5 lbs (p>.05), with 34% of participants gaining over 5 lbs and 17% over 10 lbs. Participants who gained weight were men, ate more calories from sweets or desserts, and consumed fewer calories from fats. Increase in calories from desserts or sweets increased odds of weight gain (OR=1.075, CI=1.01-1.14) and body fat (OR=1.106, CI=1.036-1.181). Contextualizing the quantitative findings, students and administrators identified several themes that support healthy living, including access to nutritious food and physical amenities. Both groups also identified barriers, including easy access to high-calorie foods, limited recreation facilities, and policy challenges. Administrators spoke of extant health promotion efforts; however, students did not perceive active health promotion initiatives on campus. Dietary habits were identified drivers of weight gain among students. Extant campus supports and barriers to exercise and healthy eating among students were equally identified by students and administrators with great reliability. Implications for future health promotion efforts, food availability, recreation, and physical amenities are discussed in the context of clears sets of recommendations for stakeholder groups. Future research should explore specific dietary foods that are increasing weight and develop targeted preventions/interventions for individuals at risk.

The growing prevalence of obesity among college-attending young adults is a major public health issue. Over one-third of U.S. college students are either overweight (23.3%) or obese (16.3%) (ACHA, 2017). This is problematic because overweight status during young adulthood is predictive of obesity in later life (Zheng et al., 2017). Thus, overweight and obese young adults face greater risk of developing chronic diseases, including more than half of the 15 leading causes of death in the U.S. The college milieu may be key to understanding obesity because it creates a distinct psychosocial context and shapes exposure to unique risks for young adults. Moreover, college students experience greater psychological distress compared to the general population, perhaps due to the stress associated with increased social and academic pressures. Given that distress has been linked with obesity and maladaptive health behaviors in prior research, enhancing psychological well-being may be an effective strategy to address the rising rates of obesity among college students. However, we still know relatively little about the distinct psychosocial and contextual risk and protective factors among this population. The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate the contextual, psychosocial, and behavioral factors associated with obesity among college students at an ethnically diverse public university in Southern California. This will be investigated in three studies: Study 1 examines the extent to which social context and psychological distress are associated with increased odds of obesity among college students. Study 2 evaluates the role of lifestyle health behaviors in the relationship between distress and obesity. Study 3 assesses the ways that social relationships and eating habits shape comorbidity patterns in psychological distress and obesity among college students; a latent variable structural model is also used to explore these relationships. Findings from this dissertation may contribute to the limited, but growing body of literature on the nuanced relationship between psychological distress and obesity among college students. In addition, understanding how the college context distinguishes the health of this population may help campuses to create more tailored prevention and intervention programs that account for these psychosocial and contextual risk factors.

College students believe that university weight management interventions impact their health habits. This suggests that universities can play a large role in encouraging students to be active. The purpose of this study was to investigate this claim and to acquire a better understanding of weight change in first year college students in the first semester. We specifically sought to identify the variables that influence weight gain, as well as determine the awareness and usage of resources available to the students. A survey was given to first year students addressing the variables of interest including change in weight and Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as awareness, usage, and preference of resources on campus. There were 176 participants in the study, 90 males and 86 females, with an average age of 18.3±0.7 (mean±SD) years. They gained an average of 1.6 lbs. (159.3±40.0 to 160.9±39.8) and had an average increase in BMI of 0.2 (24.1±5.5 to 24.3±5.4) in their first semester. Those who expected to gain weight may be at risk of gaining weight ±2(4, n=176)=27.729, p±.001. Many students are aware of the resources on campus but do not use them. This study shows that students who expectations influence weight status and that student awareness and usage of resources can be improved upon.

Weight gain among college freshmen appears to be increasing, potentially due to changes in environment, greater freedom, more stress, and a social atmosphere that encourages increased consumption of unhealthy foods and less physical activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an intervention conducted in 2009-2010 where college freshmen received nutrition information through email, text messages, or in-person meetings, and to determine which intervention yielded the greatest self-reported lifestyle change, reasons for not completing the study, and reasons non-responding students chose not to participate. One survey went to all sophomores, asking if they received the invitation, and if so, why they chose not to participate. Of the 689 respondents, 40% remembered receiving the invitation email, 33% said time was the main reason they didn't participate, 23% recommended shortening the survey, and 31% suggested including a prize for completing the survey. A second survey was sent to all 61 participants from the previous year's study to solicit their perceptions of the study, and 40 responded (11 email group, 7 text group, 9 classroom group, and 12 controls) with 90% having completed the study, and 75% of those not completing the study identified time as the reason. Although only 18% wrote down any of the tips, 43% had tried some of the tips, 20% said that the study had caused them to change some eating habits, and 23% stated that the study has caused them to change some physical activity habits. Although 20% could not remember any specific tips, 43% stated that they feel more aware of what they consume, and 50% stated that the topics provided the right amount of information. Overall, participants seemed pleased with information received and the method by which information was received; however, most said time constraints made it difficult to fully participate. Time appears to be the factor having the greatest effect on student participation in research on freshman weight gain, and should be considered by educators when planning interventions.

College freshmen are exposed to a variety of environmental and social factors that can alter changes to health habits and encourage weight gain. Weight-related conversations had with friends may be related to self-perception of weight and alterations to health behaviors, but this association has yet to be assessed in the college population. Objective: This study aims to examine the relationship between friend advice about weight management, self-perception of weight, and alterations to weight change intentions, physical activity, and eating habits in college freshmen over time. Methods: College freshmen from ASU with complete data for three time points (n=321) were found to be predominantly female (72.2%) and non-white (53.2%) with a mean age of 17.5±41. Complete data included responses for items included in analysis which were related to friend encouragement about weigh management, self-perception of weight, physical activity, eating behaviors, and weight change intentions. A longitudinal multivariate mediation analysis using negative binomial regression adjusted for sociodemographics and clustering by dorm was used to assess the relationship between 1) friend encouragement about weight management at time 1 and behavioral outcomes at time 3, 2) friend encouragement about weight management at time 1 and self-perception of weight at time 2, and 3) self-perception of weight at time 2 and behavioral outcomes at time 3. Results: A small proportion of population perceived friend encouragement about weight loss (18.3%) and weight gain (14.4%) at time 1. Half the population (50.9%) had the self-perception of overweight at time 2. At time 3, more than half (54.3%) of individuals performed at least 60 minutes of MVPA and consumed at least a serving of sugar-sweetened beverages each day, while nearly half (48.6%) consumed at least 2 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. This study investigated changes in weight in college freshmen at a small university in the Pacific Northwest. A growing body of literature has investigated the recent phenomenon that college students may be vulnerable to a rapid weight gain that could predispose them to a number of unhealthy consequences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of any weight gain in college freshman and any factors that might be associated with this finding such as physical activity levels, caloric intake, and the use of healthy campus options available to students. The results indicated that a substantial weight gain was not found, but students tended to, on average, gain more than what was expected for a typical adult given the time frame. Other contributing factors could not be determined from this study. Possible intervention strategies are cited in an effort to improve upon future research in this area.

The transition to university is a critical time period for weight gain, possibly explained by a decrease in physical activity. The aim of this study was to identify changes in physical activity as students' transition from high school to university and to assess if they relate to body weight and composition. Three hundred one (71 males, 230 females) first year Brock University students participated. Anthropometric and body composition data were collected in September and April. Students also filled out questionnaires assessing their physical activity behaviours. Significant increases in weight, BMI, and body composition were observed across the sample, accompanied by reductions in physical activity output and increases in factors preventing physical activity participation. However, the reductions in physical activity were not correlated with the changes in body composition. Therefore, in our sample, changes in physical activity behaviours are not the main cause of weight gain in first year university students.
