Hierbei dient die digitale Transformation als wissenschaftlicher Rahmen. Somit wird die Digitalisierung betrachtet und deren Einfluss auf das Unternehmen, d. h. welche technologische Lösungen LEGO verwendet hat und welcher Wandel dieser Prozess hervorgebracht hat. In der Forschungsarbeit wird auf das Marketing Management Bezug genommen. Hierbei werden die Möglichkeiten beschrieben, die durch die Digitalisierung entstanden sind. Exemplarisch dafür sind die neuen Kommunikationswege zwischen Kunden und Unternehmen, wodurch eine stärkere Beziehung zur Käuferschaft aufgebaut werden kann. Ein Betrieb kann die direkte Verbindung zum Kunden nutzen, indem bspw. Kunden-Präferenzen besser definiert werden. Des Weiteren ermöglicht die Digitalisierung die Kombination von analogen und digitalen Produkten bzw. Dienste oder die Möglichkeit, etablierte Artikel durch digitale Mehrwertdienste (Value-Added Services) zu ergänzen. Zum anderen nimmt die Forschungsarbeit Bezug auf das strategische Management. Digitale Technologien helfen Konsumenten, am Produkt mitzuwirken. Durch Co-Creations können Produkte designt oder kundenspezifisch (customized) angepasst werden. Durch die Beteiligung des Kunden an der Produktentwicklung können sich neue Märkte ergeben, die in einen nachhaltigen Wettbewerbsvorteil resultieren können. Während der Forschung wird auf die Blue Ocean Strategy und die Differenzierungsstrategie verwiesen. Dadurch soll anhand des Fallbeispiels aufgezeigt werden, wie diese Strategien LEGO geholfen haben, unbekannte und neue Märkte zu erschließen.
