"The purpose of the document is to support countries in establishing and implementing an effective national food recall system to respond to food safety events or emergencies. By drawing on demonstrated best practices, the elements for an effective national food recall system, and the process for establishing, reviewing and/or improving the national food recall system, are described as essential components of a national food control system. The primary target audience comprises the competent authorities and all other national authorities working in the area of food safety. While developed mainly for government agencies, this document may also be useful for other organizations that engage in activities within the area of food safety, including those in the private sector. In recognition of the importance of relying on effective national food control systems in the application of food safety risk analysis during emergencies, this document also addresses the specific needs of countries that are in the process of developing their national food control systems. The document outlines best practice on how to: 1) develop and/or improve, 2) review and 3) implement effective national food recall systems as a key management option in the response to food safety events or emergencies. This document should not be regarded as an additional standard, nor as a model for food recall, but rather as guidance based on a collection of examples of demonstrated good practice provided by experts from various parts of the world."--Page 10.

Diverse foods derived from livestock production systems, including grazing and pastoralist systems, and from the hunting of wild animals, provide high-quality proteins, important fatty acids and various vitamins and minerals – contributing to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health. Livestock species are adapted to a wide range of environments, including areas that are unsuitable for crop production. Globally, more than a billion people depend on livestock value chains for their livelihoods. Small-scale livestock farmers and pastoralists make up a large proportion of livestock producers. Well integrated livestock production increases the resilience of small-scale farming systems. Livestock also provide other important ecosystem services in landscape management, provide energy and help to improve soil fertility. Rangeland or grassland ecosystems occupy some 40 percent of the world’s terrestrial area. Livestock keepers raise grazing animals to transform grassland vegetation into food. Challenges related to high resource utilization and pollution, food–feed competition, greenhouse-gas emissions, antimicrobial resistance and animal welfare as well as zoonotic and food-borne diseases, accessibility and affordability need to be solved if agrifood systems are to become more sustainable. FAO’s Committee on Agriculture requested a comprehensive, science- and evidence-based global assessment of the contribution of livestock to food security, sustainable food systems, nutrition and healthy diets, considering environmental, economic and social sustainability. The assessment consists of four component documents. This first component document provides a holistic analysis of the contribution of terrestrial animal source food to healthy diets for improved nutrition and health outcomes over the course of people’s lives.

Worldwide, food safety incidents can have a significant impact on public health, economies, agrifood trade, food security, and public confidence in the food supply. The prevention, mitigation, and management of food safety incidents globally can be enhanced through more effective early warning systems for food safety. Early warning systems help countries to better anticipate food safety threats and respond quicker through appropriate risk management actions. This publication provides a resource for countries to enhance their early warning capabilities and capacities. It emphasizes the need to build and connect links between existing food safety infrastructure (e.g. surveillance and food control) and to improve collaborative relationships among all of the different food chain stakeholders in order to protect public health and the food supply.

The main objective of the tool is to propose a harmonized, objective and consensual basis to analyse the performance of a national food control system. It is intended to be used by countries as a supporting basis for self-assessment to identify priority areas of improvement and plan sequential and coordinated activities to reach expected outcomes, and by repeating the assessment on a regular basis, countries can monitor their progresses. The Tool is based on Codex principles and Guidelines for National Food Control Systems as well as other relevant Codex guidance for food control systems, which are referenced throughout the document. Its scope is given by the dual objectives quoted in Codex guidance for these systems: protect health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade. This introductory volume presents the FAO/WHO Food Control System Assessment Tool, providing background to its development and outlining its main scope and objectives. It presents a thorough review of the assessment Tool structure, breaking it down into its constitutive elements (dimensions, sub-dimensions, competencies and assessment criteria). Finally, it gives an overview of the assessment approach, from the ratings to the descriptive analysis supporting the allocation of scores. The volume also contains a glossary of useful terms and the list of Codex documents referenced in the Tool.

This manual provides comprehensive information and practical guidelines to assist farmers, producers and all stakeholders along the feed value chain to comply with the requirements of the Codex Alimentarius Code of Practice on Good Animal Feeding. The application of the Code is an important step for the expansion of international trade of feed and products of animal origin. Both feed/food exporting and importing countries can benefit from a greater and safer trade of feed and products of animal origins. This manual is intended to guide managers of feedmills, the feed industry as a whole and on-farm feed mixers and producers. It will also be of value to national competent authorities, in particular those engaged in feed inspection, in their supervisory roles. It can also serve as a training manual and a guide to setting up national feed associations.

This document presents a set of criteria and traceability requirements to guide actors within the food industry to develop and implement a traceability system in selected food sectors that allows them to respond rapidly to food safety events. The document was elaborated under the FAO project: TCP/SLC/3403 – “Strengthening capacity for a rapid response to food safety events through enhancement of the food traceability and recall legislation and systems in the Caribbean Sub region” and validated based on several pilots conducted within the EU-funded project implemented by IICA (‘SPS Project’): Support to the Forum of Caribbean States in the implementation of the commitments undertaken under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA): Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures”. This document covers specific sectors that were identified in each of the four beneficiary countries for the provision of detailed guidance within the scope of TCP/SLC/3403 and the SPS Project. These are:  Antigua and Barbuda- fisheries, pineapple, carrot and onion sectors  Barbados- poultry, fisheries, and condiments sectors  Dominica- fresh produce, agro-processing and fisheries sectors  Grenada- nutmeg, cocoa, fisheries, and fresh produce sectors This practical Guidance is intended for those responsible for implementing traceability in their organization’s operations and supply chain. The scope establishes both the minimum requirements and the best practices for the sharing of information along the supply chain. This guide covers:  Traceability practices from the supplier’s processing facility to the point of sale to the consumer;  All food products for human consumption;  All levels of the product hierarchy, including pallets, cases and consumer items; and  All supply chain segments including, suppliers, wholesalers, distributors, and retailers. The minimum requirements presented in this Guidance are based on the assessment of the available national legislation or legislation that may support or influence food traceability and recall in each beneficiary country, the evaluation of the traceability situation on-site, the results of the pilots, the US and Europe traceability legislation, and the best practices recommended based on the information collected from several referenced documents. After introductory chapters about general background, Traceability and Recall definitions, system requirements and references used, this document devotes several chapters to present detailed and specific implementation traceability and recall guidelines for growers, packers, exporters / importers, manufacturers, processors and distributors as well as their customers and suppliers with examples and business scenarios.

Defence Against Bioterrorism written by Vladan Radosavljevic and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-22 with Science categories.

This volume is based on a multidisciplinary approach towards biological and chemical threats that can, and have been previously used in bioterrorism attacks around the globe. Current knowledge and evidence-based principles from the fields of synthetic biology, microbiology, plant biology, chemistry, food science, forensics, tactics, infective medicine, psychology and others are compiled to address numerous aspects and the complexity of bioterrorism attacks. The main focus is on biological threats, especially in the context of synthetic biology and its emerging findings that can be observed as possible threat and tool. The book examines microorganisms and their possible use in forensics, i.e. as possible detection tool that could enable fast and precise detection of possible treats. A number of plant derived components are also discussed as possible agents in bioterrorism attacks, and in relation to infectious disease pathology. Another integral part is food safety, especially in terms of large food supply chains, like airline caterings, institutionalized kitchens etc. Food can be observed as a possible mean of delivery of various agents (biological and chemical) for bioterrorism attacks. Steps on how to recognize specific critical points in a food supply chain, along with proposed corrective activities are discussed. Examples from around the globe, along with the methodological approach on how to differentiate bioterrorism attacks from other epidemics are provided. However, epidemics are also discussed in the context of migrations, with the special emphasis on the current refugee migrations that affect not only Europe, but also the United States. The book will be of interest to experts from various fields of science as well as professionals working in the field. The book encompasses examples and tools developed for easier, more specific, and faster detection of possible bioterrorism treats, along with proposed actions for some aspects of a bioterrorism attack.
