These guidelines illustrate recommendations for good practices on data collection in Eastern European inland fisheries, and in particular the Western Balkan region, based on the methodologies and approaches used in countries throughout Europe and from FAO experience of inland fisheries in other regions. They provide guidance on the options available to inland fishery managers based on particular circumstances i.e. commercial fishing or recreational use, and they are especially relevant for assisting the economies-in transition in Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. These guidelines are not an overarching work on inland fisheries management, nor do they provide advice on the environmental aspects or competing uses of inland water bodies. They focus on issues of data collection to support fishery managers whether they be government agencies, fishers or angler associations co-responsible for the management of inland resources in European rivers and lakes.

This manual was prepared within the framework of a technical assistance (TA) agreement entitled “Forest Resources Inventory and Establishment of a forest reference level for REDD+ in Nigeria (UTF /NIR/066/NIR (644170)”, to support the implementation of national forest inventory (NFI) in Nigeria. An NFI is a key component of a measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system which is a requirement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for the national forest monitoring system to assess anthropogenic forest-related greenhouse gas emissions by sources and removals by sinks. The results of the NFI will be used to support national institutions to address issues of REDD+ and greenhouse gas (GHG) international reporting obligations. It can be also used to review the policy processes to support sustainable forest management at national level.

"In 2011, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery created the Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI) to help people in vulnerable regions better understand the historical and changing risks they face from natural hazards. OpenDRI is a partnership of governments and international institutions that are building a deeper, collective understanding of risk by sharing information about their hazards, exposure, vulnerability, and risks. OpenDRI offers governments and their partners a process for cataloguing their existing data, engaging at-risk communities in mapping and curating data about their built environment, building partnerships around data. This field guide provides planners and program officers with a map of how to implement the collective effort that is OpenDRI. It is aimed at a person who needs to write a stategic vision, craft a budget, hire personnel, and evaluate the impact of open data. "
