Dem facettenreichen Phänomen der antiken Gewalt nähern sich zehn Beiträge deutsch- und englischsprachiger Autoren aus verschiedenen Perspektiven an. Die Texte basieren auf Vorträgen einer interdisziplinären Tagung zur antiken Gewalt, die im Wintersemester 2020 an der Universität Hamburg stattfand. Die Einleitung gibt einen konzisen Überblick über die unterschiedlichen "turns" (emotional, sensory, temporal und spatial turn) mit gleichzeitiger Prüfung ihrer Anschlussfähigkeit an die Gewaltforschung. Das Spektrum der Einzelbeiträge reicht von grundlegenden definitorischen Bestimmungen von Gewalt, über die Herausarbeitung neuer Topoi bis hin zu Einbindung von Teildisziplinen wie den Gender-Studies und der Militärforschung. Zudem wird ein Bogen gespannt von bislang wenig oder noch nicht beachteten Gewalträumen wie der arabischen Wüste bis hin zu vernachlässigten Formen der Gewalt, wie psychischer/verbaler Gewalt. Der militärischen Gewalt und dem Gewaltverhalten von Soldaten widmen sich die letzten Beiträge dieses Bandes.

Diese Arbeit ist konzipiert als Politikfeldanalyse, und zwar in zweifacher Hinsicht. Sie untersucht und vergleicht ein bestimmtes Politikfeld, die Au enpolitik, in zwei verschiedenen Systemen, den USA und der R mischen Republik. Somit ist sie dem Bereich der vergleichenden Policy-Forschung zuzurechnen. Die politischen Inhalte (Policies) in zwei politischen Systemen werden jeweils innerhalb bestimmter Zeitabschnitte und unter bestimmten Rahmenbedingungen untersucht. Zum einen sind dies die au enpolitischen Inhalte des politischen Systems der USA hinsichtlich des Iraks im Zeitrahmen vom 11.09.2001 bis zum 01.05.2003, also von den Terroranschl gen auf New York und Washington bis zum offiziellen Ende der Hauptkampfhandlungen des Irak-Krieges. Zum anderen sind dies die au enpolitischen Inhalte der R mischen Republik hinsichtlich Makedonien. Hierbei liegt das Augenmerk auf den Jahren 202 bis 197 v. Chr., also vom Ende des Zweiten Punischen Krieges bis zum Ende des Zweiten Makedonischen Krieges. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt dabei auf den verfolgten Policies, die im Vorfeld der beiden Kriege zu deren jeweiliger Entstehung beitrugen sowie deren Vergleich mit Hilfe einer situationsbezogenen Analyse. Die Hauptthese der Arbeit lautet, dass sich das politische Handeln und die daraus resultierenden politischen Inhalte auf dem Feld der Au enpolitik in zwei so unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen wie den heutigen Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und der antiken R mische Republik unter gewissen hnlichen Rahmenbedingungen in einer Krisensituation einander ann hern. Zwei Systeme, auf der einen Seite die heute lteste Demokratie, auf der anderen eine eindeutig aristokratisch dominierte antike Republik, kommen unter gewissen Bedingungen zu hnlichen Politikinhalten und -resultaten.
