The second-order azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics, v2, are obtained in p-Pb and PbPb collisions over a wide pseudorapidity ([eta]) range based on correlations among six or more charged particles. The p-Pb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 nb-1, were collected during the 2013 LHC p-Pb run at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV by the CMS experiment. A sample of semiperipheral PbPb collision data at √sNN=2.76 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.5 [mu]b-1 and covering a similar range of particle multiplicities as the p-Pb data, is also analyzed for comparison. The six- and eight-particle cumulant and the Lee-Yang zeros methods are used to extract the v2 coefficients, extending previous studies of two- and four-particle correlations. For both the p-Pb and PbPb systems, the v2 values obtained with correlations among more than four particles are consistent with previously published four-particle results. These data support the interpretation of a collective origin for the previously observed long-range (large [Delta][eta]) correlations in both systems. The ratios of v2 values corresponding to correlations including different numbers of particles are compared to theoretical predictions that assume a hydrodynamic behavior of a p-Pb system dominated by fluctuations in the positions of participant nucleons. These results provide new insights into the multiparticle dynamics of collision systems with a very small overlapping region.

The authors have used a nine-parameter expanding source model that includes special relativity, quantum statistics, resonance decays, and freeze-out on a realistic hypersurface in spacetime to analyze in detail invariant [pi][sup +], K[sup +], and K[sup [minus]] one-particle multiplicity distributions and [pi][sup +] and [pi][sup [minus]] two-particle correlations in nearly central collisions of Pb + Pb at p[sub lab]/A = 158 GeV/c. These studies confirm an earlier conclusion for nearly central collisions of Si + Au at p[sub lab]/A = 14.6 GeV/c that the freeze-out temperature is less than 100 meV and that both the longitudinal and transverse collective velocities -- which are anti-correlated with the temperature -- are substantial. The authors also reconciled their current results with those of previous analyses that yielded a much higher freeze-out temperature of approximately 140 meV for both Pb + Pb collisions at p[sub lab]/A = 158 GeV/c and other reactions. One type of analysis was based upon the use of a heuristic equation that neglects relativity to extrapolate slope parameters to zero particle mass. Another type of analysis utilized a thermal model in which there was an accumulation of effects from several approximations. The future should witness the arrival of much new data on invariant one-particle multiplicity distributions and two-particle correlations as functions of bombarding energy and/or size of the colliding nuclei. The proper analysis of these data in terms of a realistic model could yield accurate values for the density, temperature, collective velocity, size, and other properties of the expanding matter as it freezes out into a collection of noninteracting hadrons. A sharp discontinuity in the value of one or more of these properties could conceivably be the long-awaited signal for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma or other new physics.

Azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons with direct-photon ([gamma]dir) and neutral-pion ([pi]0) trigger particles are analyzed in central Au+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$_{NN}$ =200 GeV in the STAR experiment. The charged-hadron per-trigger yields at mid-rapidity from central Au+Au collisions are compared with p+p collisions to quantify the suppression in Au+Au collisions. The suppression of the away-side associated-particle yields per [gamma]dir trigger is independent of the transverse momentum of the trigger particle (P$trig\atop{T}$, whereas the suppression is smaller at low transverse momentum of the associated charged hadrons (P$assoc\atop{T}$). Within uncertainty, similar levels of suppression are observed for [gamma]dir and [pi]0 triggers as a function of zT ($\equiv$ P$assoc\atop{T}$$/$P$trig\atop{T}$). The results are compared with energy-loss-inspired theoretical model predictions. In conclusion, our studies support previous conclusions that the lost energy reappears predominantly at low transverse momentum, regardless of the trigger energy.
