Two particle azimuthal correlation functions measured in pp and AuAu collisions at [square root of s subscript NN] = 200 GeV at midrapidity with the central arms of the PHENIX detector are analyzed in order to extract the properties of hadronic jets produced in QCD vacuum and highly excited QCD media, like the jet shape parameters j[Subscript T] and k[Subscript T], the jet conditional yields (number of associated hadrons per high p[Subscript T] trigger hadron), and the jet fragmentation function. The analysis of pp data starts with the measurement of the vacuum fragmentation function from which the p[Subscript T] dependence of the mean fragmentation momentum fraction z is extracted. We obtain a constant value of z = 0.74±0.02 for p[Subscript T] above 3 GeV/c. Soft (non-perturbative) parton fragmentation becomes significant below 3 GeV/c and the slope of the fragmentation function is p[Subscript T] dependent in this region. Gaussian fits to jet induced azimuthal correlations are employed to measure the mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] = 359 ± 11 (stat) ± 6 (syst) MeV/c and the mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] = 964 ± 49 (stat) ± 16 (syst) MeV/c. The analysis of AuAu data is based on azimuthal correlation functions between charged hadrons in the 1.5-3 GeV/c and 3-5 GeV/c p[Subscript T] regions in five classes of collision centrality. The mean jet fragmentation transverse momentum j[Subscript Ty] is centrality independent and consistent with the value in pp data mentioned above. A strong broadening with the centrality of the extracted mean partonic transverse momentum k[Subscript Ty] (multiplied by z[Subscript trigg]) is observed. This is an important finding because hadronic jet quenching through energy loss is expected to be accompanied by a broadening effect. Another important finding is that the jet conditional yields in both the near (delta phi [Difference] 0) and away (delta phi [Difference] pi) regions exhibit a slightly raising trend with centrality. This was also expected to accompany the jet quenching found at higher p[Subscript T] based on simple energy conservation considerations.

Measurements from the CMS experiment at the LHC of dihadron correlations for charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV are presented. The results are reported as a function of the particle transverse momenta (pt) and collision centrality over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity [Delta(eta)] and the full range of relative azimuthal angle [Delta(phi)]. The observed two-dimensional correlation structure in Delta(eta) and Delta(phi) is characterised by a narrow peak at (Delta(eta), Delta(phi)) approximately (0, 0) from jet-like correlations and a long-range structure that persists up to at least.

A systematic study of the factorization of long-range azimuthal two-particle correlations into a product of single-particle anisotropies is presented as a function of pT and [eta] of both particles and as a function of the particle multiplicity in PbPb and pPb collisions. The data were taken with the CMS detector for PbPb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV and pPb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV, covering a very wide range of multiplicity. Factorization is observed to be broken as a function of both particle pT and [eta]. When measured with particles of different pT, the magnitude of the factorization breakdown for the second Fourier harmonic reaches 20% for very central PbPb collisions but decreases rapidly as the multiplicity decreases. The data are consistent with viscous hydrodynamic predictions, which suggest that the effect of factorization breaking is mainly sensitive to the initial-state conditions rather than to the transport properties (e.g., shear viscosity) of the medium. The factorization breakdown is also computed with particles of different [eta]. The effect is found to be weakest for mid-central PbPb events but becomes larger for more central or peripheral PbPb collisions, and also for very-high-multiplicity pPb collisions. The [eta]-dependent factorization data provide new insights to the longitudinal evolution of the medium formed in heavy ion collisions.

The authors have used a nine-parameter expanding source model that includes special relativity, quantum statistics, resonance decays, and freeze-out on a realistic hypersurface in spacetime to analyze in detail invariant?, K+, and K− one-particle multiplicity distributions and?+ and?− two-particle correlations in nearly central collisions of Pb + Pb at p{sub lab}/A = 158 GeV/c. These studies confirm an earlier conclusion for nearly central collisions of Si + Au at p{sub lab}/A = 14.6 GeV/c that the freeze-out temperature is less than 100 meV and that both the longitudinal and transverse collective velocities -- which are anti-correlated with the temperature -- are substantial. The authors also reconciled their current results with those of previous analyses that yielded a much higher freeze-out temperature of approximately 140 meV for both Pb + Pb collisions at p{sub lab}/A = 158 GeV/c and other reactions. One type of analysis was based upon the use of a heuristic equation that neglects relativity to extrapolate slope parameters to zero particle mass. Another type of analysis utilized a thermal model in which there was an accumulation of effects from several approximations. The future should witness the arrival of much new data on invariant one-particle multiplicity distributions and two-particle correlations as functions of bombarding energy and/or size of the colliding nuclei. The proper analysis of these data in terms of a realistic model could yield accurate values for the density, temperature, collective velocity, size, and other properties of the expanding matter as it freezes out into a collection of noninteracting hadrons. A sharp discontinuity in the value of one or more of these properties could conceivably be the long-awaited signal for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma or other new physics.

Quantum Chromodynamics, which describe the interactions of quarks and gluons, have been found not to violate global parity symmetry. However, the possibility of local parity violations due to transitions in the vacuum state of QCD is not excluded. The effects of these parity violations could be measured in the hot and dense medium created in the ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions experiment conducted at the Large Hadron Collider, called a Quark-Gluon Plasma, in which the quarks that compose most of ordinary matter are deconfined. In the strong magnetic fields which permeate the QGP in non-central collisions, parity violation would express itself as a charge asymetry with respect to the reaction plane, a phenomenon called the Chiral Magnetic Effect. The measurements of the charge-dependent correlations in a heavy-ion collisions allows to experimentally probe effects of the CME. These measurements are conducted via the use of the second harmonic two-particle correlator with respect to the reaction plane, $\langle\cos(\phi_{a}+\phi_{b}-2\psi)\rangle$ The background affecting these measurements is the consequence of an interplay of strong anisotropic flow and correlations unrelated to the CME. Correlations with respect to the fourth harmonic, $\langle\cos(2\phi_{a}+2\phi_{b}-4\psi)\rangle$, are insensitive to the CME and can be used to estimate the magnitude of these background effects. In this thesis, we present results from charge-dependent correlations with respect to both the second and fourth harmonic event planes measured in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV at the LHC using data from the ALICE detector. We also present calculations of the ratio of the fourth to second harmonics based on the blast-wave model, which serve as a baseline to understand how these background effects scale between one harmonic and another.
