Il libro comprende cinque dittici, ossia coppie di saggi, relativi ad altrettanti filosofi: Benjamin, Deleuze, Foucault, Agamben, Didi-Huberman. L’indagine verte in particolare sul rapporto che essi hanno instaurato con la letteratura e le arti visive. Per quanto riguarda quest’ultimo campo, vediamo Benjamin ispirato da un quadro di Klee, Foucault affascinato dalle opere di Manet, Didi-Huberman alle prese con una scultura di Giacometti. Ma i testi letterari non sono meno attrattivi per i filosofi: ecco dunque Deleuze che, assieme a Guattari, legge le opere di Kafka, Foucault che indaga su quelle di Brisset, Agamben che interroga gli scritti di Mallarmé. Più in generale, a essere in causa è il nesso tra linguaggio filosofico e immagini (intese sia come opere d’arte visiva, sia come figure evocate solo tramite le parole). Ad accomunare i pensatori in questione, infatti, c’è l’idea che la filosofia non costituisca un ambito separato, chiuso su se stesso, ma sia parte integrante di una cultura e di una storia ben più vaste e multiformi.

Da tempo la civiltà contemporanea viene definita una “civiltà delle immagini”. Eppure la storia dell’idea di immagine è una storia plurale e sfaccettata, che ha visto concorrere diversi saperi e attribuire all’immagine le funzioni più disparate: ontologiche, psicologiche, cultuali, tecnologiche. Il presente volume intende mostrare in quanti modi, diversissimi fra loro, si possa dire l’immagine, recuperando, accanto ai momenti salienti della riflessione filosofica, teorie e pratiche rimaste ai margini della nostra tradizione. Nel 1933 i libri e tutti i materiali dell’Istituto fondato da Warburg ad Amburgo, migrano via nave a Londra. La crisi economica mondiale e l’avvento al potere del partito Nazionalsocialista, interrompono l’ambizioso progetto di una nuova “scienza della cultura”. Sulla figura stessa del fondatore cadde l’oblio: Warburg tornerà al centro dell’attenzione solo nel 1970, con la fortunata e discussa biografia di Ernst H. Gombrich. Kurt Forster, che da studente incontrò a Londra Gertrud Bing – l’intellettuale più vicina a Warburg e l’erede della sua impresa – è uno dei più profondi conoscitori del pensiero di Warburg. Il libro raccoglie i testi di cinque lezioni tenute dall’autore nell’ambito della Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni culturali DEA. Sullo sfondo di una teoria fenomenologica dello sguardo e delle rappresentazioni, nella prima di tali lezioni l’autore tenta di render conto della definizione, in termini antropologici, degli oggetti d’arte, con un confronto con le prospettive storico-artistiche delle discipline contermini. Nella seconda si sofferma in qualità di antropologo e di fotografo-etnografo su Aby Warburg e sul suo lavoro visto come punto di contatto tra scienza sociale, iconologia e storia dell’arte. Nella terza affronta la dimensione politica delle immagini fotografiche, viste come “dispositivo”, con riferimento ai processi di costruzione e decostruzione degli universi legati al disturbo psichico. Nella quarta dedica attenzione ad alcuni aspetti degli archivi fotografici personali in rapporto alle modificazioni della memoria imposte dal digital turn e dai complessi rivolgimenti sociali contemporanei. Nella quinta, infine, riflette su quella che appare come l’unità minima di significazione della rappresentazione in epoca moderna, il fotogramma: una sorta di ghostwriter, autore occulto di una parte importante della comunicazione iconografica e plasmatore non riconosciuto di numerose istanze digitali legate alla post-modernità. Nel complesso, il libro tende a restituire un’idea ampia dell’antropologia visuale, analizzando a tutto tondo lo sguardo, il campo agentivo rappresentato dalla visione, le poetiche e le politiche d’immagine, con un confronto aperto e dialettico con la storia dell’arte, l’iconologia, la Bildwissenschaft, i Visual Studies, la critica e la storia dei media, in particolare della fotografia.
