Excerpt from Germany and the War: A Sermon States, without Alaska. But bigness is not necessarily greatness. The population of these square miles is and the army, on a war footing, is five mil lions and a half. Modern Germany is the legitimate successor of the mediaeval empire called The Holy Roman Empire, which governed that section of Europe which we now speak of as Germany, for eight hundred and forty - two years. It has been said of it - that it was not an Empire - that it was not Roman - and that it was the very furthest possible re moved from being holy. The best thing The Holy Roman Empire ever did was to offer itself as a subject for an essay to a young Oxford graduate, twenty - six years of age. In making that book James Bryce made himself famous. The modern German Empire is a Prussian product; and Prussia herself, as a dominant power, is of yesterday. It was not until after the victory of Koniggratz, in 1866, that the voice of Prussia compelled attention even in Europe; but Prussian history extends its roots very much farther back.' Within a hundred years after William came from Normandy, and, landing on the shores of England, con quered Harold of Hastings, becoming henceforth William The Conqueror - William of Germany seems not unwill ing to follow in the wake of that same little vessel, and, landing on the same shores, gain, if may be, the same title. Excerpt from Our Fight for the Heritage of Humanity: A Sermon Friederich von Bernhardi issued his readable book, Germany and the Next War in 1911. His book is notable because there is not very much which Germany has done in the present war which he did not predict would be done, and he justified the doing of it. He said in his introduction, I must first of all examine the aspira tions for peace which seem to dominate our age and threaten to poison the soul of our German people, according to their true moral significance. I must try to prove that war is not merely a necessary element in the life of nations, but an indispensable factor of culture. Excerpt from The Moral Meanings of the World War: A Sermon In nature the strongest and the most clever species of animal is best adapted for existence, hence that species survives and its competitors perish. German philosophy assumes that, among the peoples of the earth, the Germans, collectively and individually, are the strongest and' the most clever. They conclude, therefore, that the German people are the nttest to survive; and that they, therefore, have the right to exercise their higher survival qualities. That this brief summary represents the German biologic theory as applied to the present crisis may be easily proved by innumerable published and authoritative statements of their own: and the question is whether this is true and ought to be accepted by the world. Excerpt from Germany's Holy War and Other Articles Germany's bid for America's sympathy on the ground that she is conducting a holy war to protect herself and the rest of Europe from falling under Muscovite domination will not appeal to the intelligent, clear-minded American. It would be a calamity indeed for the whole world if Europe were to be ruled by the Slav, but it would likewise be a calamity should the Teuton become her master. The imminent danger today is not the rule of the Romanoffs, but that of the Hohenzollerns. The present war is not, as the German Chancellor would have it thought, a "life-and-death struggle between Germany and the Muscovite races of Russia," but obviously a life-and-death struggle between democracy and German militarism. This is why the sympathy of the majority of the American people must necessarily be with Germany's opponents. The present coalition is not directed against the German people and German civilization - no more than the coalition that put an end to the power of Napoleon the First was directed against the French people and French civilization; it is directed against the rule of might represented by German militarism. It is obvious that Germany's supreme desire in the present struggle is not the warding off of Slavic rule, - that is only incidental, - but the bringing of Europe under her own rule. Hence the present alignment of Powers against her. Her eagerness to crush France is not stimulated by her desire to save the latter country from Muscovite domination, but rather by her wish to increase her own power at the expense of her neighbors. Her evident intention to annex Belgium, should she be victorious, is not directed against the Slavs, but aims solely at her own aggrandizement. The world also realizes that Germany has played the part of a bully among European nations, - a part which is never popular, and not without danger, for the hour of reckoning generally comes, and when it does come, the bully is likely to find himself without friends. The invasion of Belgium was a brutal manifestation of Germany's belief that might makes right. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Germany and England The efficiency of the Liege forts and the gallantry of some thirty thousand Belgian soldiers have checked the German advance, have dislocated the German plans, and gained for the French 'an invaluable extension of time in which to complete their mobilisation and arrange their dispositions. Could we have-put half a million troops behind. The defences of Liege and Namur, the German flank movement would have been rendered impossible. To-day we are at war. Mistakes have been made in the past; it is useless to recall them. Are at war, and shall be well advised to take example by Lord Kitchener, and make the best of the means at our disposal. Excerpt from The German War, Its Morals and Ends German Krieg has become the traditional method of German acquisition and aggrandisement. Indeed, kriegen in German colloquial speech denotes precisely this. And what does Germany want? She wants to make war and have other nations remain neutral, while she slays and destroys where she will. This is all that Germany asked of Great Britain, of France, of Russia, and of her quondam ally, the kingdom of Italy. Germany has not in good faith advanced one just reason for her waging of war. Her real reason is the prosecution of her premeditated plan to throw Europe into chaos for the purpose of adding to her territorial domains by the wreck and slaughter of her neighbors. This war is an atrocity made in Germany. It lacks even the elements of a fair game with its seditious spies, incendiary bombs, and submarine torpedoes by which Germany has pushed her ubiquitous nose into the affairs and security of other nations until she has made of herself an international offense. Do the Germans think by these means to cower and conquer the nations? Of course they cannot do it. They are only laying up for themselves a store of wrath and contempt that justly or unjustly will be visited upon their children's children, and from which they may only be redeemed by a repudiation of the creed and the craft of those who prepare war and contrive offensive engines of death and devastation. There will be a new mind in Germany by the time the cripples she has made in this war have disappeared from her sight. For the gentle German there will then be no more of glory in the Sieges Alee. The only excuse advanced by Germany for choosing war which is at all adequate as a justification for her belligerent trespasses, is that Germany was surrounded by a world of enemies who had avowed her destruction. And in the indigenous and radical tongue of the German, uncorrupted and unmollified as it has been, by the language and comity of Rome, an enemy is literally a fiend to be hated and destroyed. The Germans have certainly become fiends in their enmity toward the nations against which they have made war. And this fiendish animus, which seems to be a natural project of the German conscience and imagination, is by them freely ascribed to those nations which as belligerents are opposed to Germany in the present war. As I heard one simple and sincere German put it: "Sie wollen die deutsche Sprache ganz vernichten." It is true that the German grunts, and that his guttural speech has no consonance with the tongue of any other nation, but this does not justify the lie that the European powers were in a coalition to promote offensive measures for the destruction and partition of Germany, which lie has been reiterated by Germans in all degrees, from Kaiser to Knecht, until they seem to believe it to be the truth. And it is for this lie that Germany professedly wages this atrocious war, and fills earth and air and sea with fiends who wield the implements of death and rain. The Germans have made of war a religion, the professors of which for forty years have stood in rostrum and pulpit as the preceptors of the people. The whole people, in all degrees, have thus been impregnated with a culture of brutal materialism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The War and Theology The eflect of German thought on British theology began to be felt first in Reformation times but it was neither marked nor widespread till the middle of the nineteenth century. In the year 1857 Mark Pattison was able to write, ' It must not be supposed that German theology is some obscure national product, the concern exclusively of the country which has given it birth. It is no insulated phenomenon. Though gener ated in Germany it belongs to Christendom. It is the theological movement of the age. It is only because there is fuller intellectual life in Germany than elsewhere -only because it so happens that, at present, European speculation is transacted by Germans, as our financial afiairs are by Jews, that German characteristics are impressed on the substance of the Christian science. The capital of learning is in the hands of Germans, and theirs has been the enterprise which has directed it into theological channels.' True as this judgement is, it had men, up to that time, by no means universally accepted. Both in Liberal and orthodox circles, by Arnold as well as by Pusey, German neology was regarded with dislike and alarm. In 1825, in his preface to a translation of Schleiermacher's Critical Essay on the Gospel of St. Lake, Connop Thirlwall had written, It would almost seem as if at Oxford the knowledge of German subjected a divine. Excerpt from Germany and the Prussian Spirit Like John Bull or Uncle Sam, these two German figures are, of course, merely the rough types of popular carica ture; but like all such types they represent an instinctive popular judgment which is seldom very much astray. In the case of Germany, as in other cases, the two figures are founded on broad truth, and they epitomize together in a very Significant way the origin and character of the new German Empire. The transformation of the one into the other is one of the most remarkable events in history. Even so Faust, calling in a dangerous doctor for the trouble of his soul, abandons his study, his books, his tubes and retorts, his doctor's gown, in order to live the worldly life he has hitherto despised.
