L’inno – il canto in onore degli dèi – è oggi per noi qualcosa di cosí estraneo e lontano, che dimentichiamo che esso è stato per secoli la forma per eccellenza della poesia. La scoperta davvero inedita di Nicoletta Di Vita è che un legame segreto unisce fin dalle origini l’inno alla filosofia dell’Occidente, che esso è stato cioè per il mondo classico la forma per eccellenza del pensiero. Una rigorosa indagine archeologica, che scavalca le false barriere fra le discipline – dalla storia letteraria all’antropologia, dalla linguistica alla scienza delle religioni – mostra cosí non soltanto che Empedocle, Aristotele, Cleante, Proclo e lo stesso Socrate hanno composto inni, ma che l’inno è, insieme al lamento, il luogo in cui l’uomo compie l’esperienza originaria del suo essere parlante. Nella nominazione del dio non è, cioè, semplicemente in questione un genere letterario, che ha caratteri costanti dagli inni omerici ai tardi inni di Hölderlin, ma l’evento stesso del nome, cioè di quell’elemento del linguaggio di cui Saussure diceva che non è possibile fornire una definizione. Il lettore che avrà seguito l’appassionante ricerca di Nicoletta Di Vita scopre alla fine che l’inno e il lamento sono ancora oggi le due vocazioni fondamentali dell’essere parlante, in cui l’uomo celebra e custodisce il suo stesso linguaggio, prova a dire lo stesso rapporto – sempre problematico e rischioso – fra le parole e le cose. L’inno è per questo «il piú prezioso esempio di filosofia». g.a. «Nulla è piú lontano dalle nostre vite che un inno al dio. La stessa espressione ci è estranea, persino sospetta: non sono forse morti, per banalizzare la formula che segna il nostro tempo, tutti gli dèi?»"
