Excerpt from Handwriting and Expression The movements which the hand makes in the act of writing, form a tracing upon paper, which observation and comparison of data have shown to be a graphic representation, within certain limits, of the individuality of the writer. This tracing of his nature which a man unconsciously makes when he writes, has the advantage of permanency, which allows an amount of detailed study to be given to facts of this kind, that it is not practicable to apply so readily to many other forms of gesture, which, althcugh equally expressive, are fleeting in their manner Of outward manifestation, such, for example, as facial or other bodily gestures and move ments. Excerpt from The Psychology of Handwriting All that is necessary to consider is that the impulses which are transmitted from the brain to the fingers differ, in degree, with each person, setting him apart from his fellows; and by comparing the strength or weakness Of strokes with the particular formations which appear, it is possible to reach an accurate conclusion. So people are divided into groups in accordance with their like nesses or dissimilarities Of pen formations. The English writer, Disraeli says, Handwriting bears an analogy to the character Of the writer, as all voluntary actions are characteristic. It is a common occurrence with us all to recognize the script of our friends and acquaintances. We do it at sight, automatically, in the same way that we know the tones of voice. The science of reading character from handwriting is a simple one, if the principles laid down are followed. At the outset, it is self-evident to everyone that bodily weakness affects the steadiness Of the hand. In wielding the pen, the person's force and stamina being lowered, the features of the writing become altered, reflecting such debility. NO malady to which we are heirs but stretches its tentacles along the nerves, getting the muscles in their firm grasp, and this retards freedom of movement. For this reason a change is made in an individual's usual style. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Handwriting A few years ago a portion of these sketches appeared, as a series of articles, in the columns of an illustrated contemporary. At the time the idea excited some interest and amusement, and was frequently plagiarised. Much correspondence arose out of the commentary one of the most distinguished scientists of the age - and a good calligraphist to boot - in acknowledging the j ustness of the strictures, regretted - in his case needlessly-that he was too old to mend. Other well-known personages desired a niche in the chirographic pantheon. Circum stances having caused a lengthy discontinuance of the series, it is now deemed preferable to publish the whole of the sketches in a volume - after thorough revision than to resume the original scheme. Excerpt from Graphology and the Psychology of Handwriting But only those readers who have attempted to work through it are aware how voluminous is the literature of graphology. This literature is found mainly in the French and German languages. Discussions of graphology by English writers suffer greatly by comparison, so much more subtle, discriminating, and scholarly are the former. A somewhat close reading of a number of these works has convinced me that a summary of the points of view involved might be profitably undertaken. If nothing more, it may stimulate the psychology of handwriting to novel methods of approach. In my survey of graphological doctrine I have followed, largely, a comparative treatment. I have sought, that is, to present graphological material in light of the perspective furnished by the modern scientific study of handwriting. Such study has pursued several differing lines of interest, very differently motivated. A word as to each will serve to map out our territory. Excerpt from Principles Involved in the Teaching of Handwriting A Cooperative Article by Professor Alfred L. Hall-quest and four of his students: D. M. Allan, F. C. Hamer, R. C. Haydon and W. C. Whitlock. Among the criticisms made concerning courses in education is the justifiable one that too much emphasis is being placed on methods of teaching. It is a justifiable criticism, however, only where method means artificial device or some clap - trap scheme of stimulating interest and arousing spasmodic effort. Until we can find a less objectionable term it perhaps will be wiser to employ the more significant word, principles. One may well doubt whether any normal school or Department of Education in a University can suggest methods of teaching capable of universal application. But the' principles involved in properly developing a class and subject in relation to each other are doubt less generally applicable, albeit they must vary in method of application. In this article an attempt is made to present some of the principles that have been formulated on the basis of considerable experimentation in handwriting. A reading of the article should help teachers in rural districts, especially, to a more economical use of the writing period. Excerpt from Classification and Identification of Handwriting In the present system a crime category has been dispensed with in order that a single search of the files may suffice to establish whether or not a duplicate exists therein, which is believed to conform more closely to the modern idea of centralization of records. Thus, as with fingerprints, the writing specimen itself contains all the elements necessary for its correct classification, regard less of the criminal proclivities, name, description, etc., of the author. A thief to-day may turn forger to-mor row or blackmailer the next day; so were his specimen filed first according to criminal specialty, and second according to the graphic characteristics of his writing, search would be necessary under a number of crime di visions in order to make his identification certain.
