Excerpt from Principles Involved in the Teaching of Handwriting A Cooperative Article by Professor Alfred L. Hall-quest and four of his students: D. M. Allan, F. C. Hamer, R. C. Haydon and W. C. Whitlock. Among the criticisms made concerning courses in education is the justifiable one that too much emphasis is being placed on methods of teaching. It is a justifiable criticism, however, only where method means artificial device or some clap - trap scheme of stimulating interest and arousing spasmodic effort. Until we can find a less objectionable term it perhaps will be wiser to employ the more significant word, principles. One may well doubt whether any normal school or Department of Education in a University can suggest methods of teaching capable of universal application. But the' principles involved in properly developing a class and subject in relation to each other are doubt less generally applicable, albeit they must vary in method of application. In this article an attempt is made to present some of the principles that have been formulated on the basis of considerable experimentation in handwriting. A reading of the article should help teachers in rural districts, especially, to a more economical use of the writing period. Excerpt from Public School Penmanship: A Handbook for Teachers It is probable that most teachers understand less about the fundamental principles of chirography than they do about any other study in the grade curriculum. Because of this lack of knowledge the majority of the public school profession realize their inability to teach writing properly. They will correctly give it as the most important reason why the class-room penmanship is no better. This book has a triple purpose: first, to unfold enough of the theory of penmanship to educate any one in that part of the subject; secondly, to suggest what to teach in penmanship; and thirdly, to explain how penmanship should be taught in public schools. Were it not for the explanation of the theory the book would be of small assistance. It is of little use to repeat what should be done to teach writing unless at the same time the teacher acquires a better preparation for her work. To this end, therefore, the instruction here given is definite, progressive, and constructive. The last part of the book contains a suggestive course of study in public school penmanship. As stated in that chapter, for various reasons no arbitrary plan can be followed with the greatest success. Excerpt from The Handwriting Movement: A Study of the Motor Factors of Excellence in Penmanship, an Investigation Carried on With the Aid of a Subsidy by the General Education Board Three phases of the writing activity were examined in the present study. The first was the position of the hand and arm, including the grasp of the penholder. Five aspects of hand position were studied. The good and poor writers were classified under each of these aspects, and statistics were compiled in order to determine what types of posi tion are more common among good than among poor writers. Finally practical rules for guidance In teaching hand position were derived. The second phase that was studied was the writing movement in its gross aspect, which is usually designated by the terms finger move ment, hand movement, and arm movement. The varieties of movement were classified under four heads. The purpose was to com pare the various writers in what may be called the composition of the movement. The movement as a whole may be composed of varying proportions of finger movement, hand movement, wrist movement, and arm movement. Some varieties are more common among good writers and others are more common among poor writers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual of Free-Hand Penmanship IN this little Manual we have sought to give in very brief com pass the best method of teaching writing. Other manuals have their excellences; but they are generally so scientific and elaborate, that the practical teacher is discouraged, and soon throws them aside. In presenting this, we presume on the teacher's knowledge of the art of teaching, and only give what is needed for this special branch. We have condensed in it the results of years of practical experience in the public schools; and have endeavored to put it in such a simple, practical, and convenient shape, that the teacher can take it in his left hand, and illustrate with his right on the board. The art of teaching writing is no mystery: it is simply about the hardest work the teacher has to do; and for this simple reason, that the results are visible and permanent. If the teachings of this little book are followed, we will warrant the most satisfactory results. We might apologize for the homely character of the language used in the description of the letters. Some may mock at it; but remember that it is meant for little children between eight and nine years old. If you have hitherto been using a complicated, scientific, abstract system of elements and principles with them, all we can say is, Try this method, and we are satisfied to abide by your verdict. There is an old proverb, Let those laugh that win. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Psychology and Pedagogy of Handwriting Writing is a mode of expression. It is a mode of expression with which nature does not freely endow us at birth; on the contrary, its development demanded a tremendous expenditure of energy by the race and its acquisition makes fairly large demands upon the individual. It must be learned; and it is the business of educational psychology to discover how it can be most easily and economically learned by the child. Many of the best psychologists of recent times have brought their intelligence and industry to bear upon this problem, and the results which they have obtained are of sufficient importance to justify the compilation of their data and an attempt to apply their findings in a practical way to the problems which beset the teacher of writing. The earlier investigators of handwriting confined themselves closely to the act of writing, devoting their attention to an analysis of the movements used. Because of their labors it is now possible to state in a fairly authoritative fashion just what is the best type of movement and how it may be most easily acquired. Until some device for the accurate measurement of quality in writing was devised, it was almost impossible to investigate the product of the writing act with any degree of accuracy. Thorndike made this possible by his Graphometer. A new era of investigation opened then, and following his lead Ayres, Freeman, and others have constructed more or less efficient scales for the measurement of handwriting. While not as much work as could be desired has been done with these scales in the way of school surveys, comparison of methods, and the solving of various problems in writing, still sufficient has been accomplished to justify the publication of a book which attempts to bring together the main facts in a way which makes an intelligent and comprehensive view of writing and its problems possible. Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Handwriting: A Practical Manual for School Boards, Teachers, and Students, With Diagrams and Illustrations The distinguished professor of Anatomy in the University of Vienna, Dr. Toldt, has declared that "The question of Instruction in Writing should occupy the first place, as the teaching of that subject is attended with so great danger to Spinal curvature, Breathing and digestive Disturbances, Myopia or Shortsight." And the no less distinguished oculist. Professor Dr. Hermann Cohn, has publicly stated that "Vertical writing is the writing of the future." Realising the force of these official statements the Author has the more confidence in submitting to the Profession and Public a manual the chief object of which is to afford information on all the vital and important questions that modern research in the Art and Science of Handwriting has brought to the front. Hitherto Caligraphy has been considered exclusively as an art (witness the works and specimens of plain and ornamental penmanship extant up to a most recent date) but the latest investigations (both Medical and Educational) exhibit it to us as a Science. Writing is undoubtedly one of the principal and most essential subjects taught in our Schools, but there is no text-book on the question which professes to be a work of reference and certainly none that deals "in extenso" with the topics which for some years past have so deeply agitated Medical (and to a smaller extent Educational) circles both at home and abroad. A glance at the list in Chapter XIII. will show how popularly and superficially the subject of Handwriting has been generally approached and the necessity for a production which shall give side by side the several arguments which have been adduced in favour of and in opposition to the theories propounded.
