Excerpt from Handwriting and Expression The movements which the hand makes in the act of writing, form a tracing upon paper, which observation and comparison of data have shown to be a graphic representation, within certain limits, of the individuality of the writer. This tracing of his nature which a man unconsciously makes when he writes, has the advantage of permanency, which allows an amount of detailed study to be given to facts of this kind, that it is not practicable to apply so readily to many other forms of gesture, which, althcugh equally expressive, are fleeting in their manner Of outward manifestation, such, for example, as facial or other bodily gestures and move ments. Excerpt from Handwriting There was one other important source out of which a new and economical script could be extracted. The best known script of the early Middle Ages, next to cursive, must have been the half-uncial. It is itself an example of a calligraphic script formed by promoting cursive elements to a higher state. Conscious of its lowlier origin this script was less pretentious than the uncial, and having less dignity to maintain could without incongruity be written quite small and thus be used to make cheaper books. The small type of half-uncial, thus produced, to which Traube (i dare say jestingly) gave the name of quarter-uncial has the size and almost the form of minuscule, and, like minuscule, is written on the four-line principle, with the descending and ascending letters touching the first and fourth lines respectively. It differs from minuscule, to be sure, in the general effect, in that indescribable something, that bloom, which separates a fifth-century manuscript from an eighth. Excerpt from Thought and Expression: Or the Child's First Book Written Language Most of our children leave school with little or no practical training in the art of expressing their thoughts with the pen. And such are our methods that most of the remainder will be kept back by a life-long dread of putting their thoughts on paper. Their power of expression by writing is fettered and we fail to set it free. True, many learn a school penmanship and a school reading, or in the technical sense "learn to read and write." But, whatever may be said of the reading, the writing is not introduced with any immediate reference to thought, but as an art of itself. It is usually begun some time after the child has learned to read and spell; it is then taught as the art of making letters and putting them together, not as the art of expressing thought. Hence it takes on that peculiar style which the taste of the teacher or the rules of the art may determine. It is totally unlike that which the muscles form when under the influence of thought - that which gives a personal character to the hand-writing. This procedure is equally at variance with nature in calling forth muscular action in speech. The muscles begin to act under the impulse of thought, and under the same influence they are exercised and trained. Every child thus acquires his distinctive habit of speaking. There is nothing in the nature of the two cases to occasion this difference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Psychology and Pedagogy of Handwriting Writing is a mode of expression. It is a mode of expression with which nature does not freely endow us at birth; on the contrary, its development demanded a tremendous expenditure of energy by the race and its acquisition makes fairly large demands upon the individual. It must be learned; and it is the business of educational psychology to discover how it can be most easily and economically learned by the child. Many of the best psychologists of recent times have brought their intelligence and industry to bear upon this problem, and the results which they have obtained are of sufficient importance to justify the compilation of their data and an attempt to apply their findings in a practical way to the problems which beset the teacher of writing. The earlier investigators of handwriting confined themselves closely to the act of writing, devoting their attention to an analysis of the movements used. Because of their labors it is now possible to state in a fairly authoritative fashion just what is the best type of movement and how it may be most easily acquired. Until some device for the accurate measurement of quality in writing was devised, it was almost impossible to investigate the product of the writing act with any degree of accuracy. Thorndike made this possible by his Graphometer. A new era of investigation opened then, and following his lead Ayres, Freeman, and others have constructed more or less efficient scales for the measurement of handwriting. While not as much work as could be desired has been done with these scales in the way of school surveys, comparison of methods, and the solving of various problems in writing, still sufficient has been accomplished to justify the publication of a book which attempts to bring together the main facts in a way which makes an intelligent and comprehensive view of writing and its problems possible. Excerpt from The Art of Writing English: A Book for College Classes This book is the outgrowth of two convictions. The first of these is that greater emphasis ought to be placed upon the fact that writing is not merely self-expression, but communication; in other words, that composition must be regarded chie y as a double-ended process in which the writer is successful only when he has produced the desired effect upon his audience. The second is that this communication through writing is an art, and must be studied very much as other arts are studied. Excerpt from What Handwriting Indicates: An Analytical Graphology N or is there anything strange in this. Graph ology is based on observation backed by common sense. The timid person who gives you a weak, fishy hand-shake writes a timid, weak hand, and the virile man who grasps you firmly writes a firm, decided hand. Vivacious persons do not produce nerveless scrawls, neither do lethargic persons wield nimble pens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
