Depuis de longues années, son auteur milite pour la promotion du swahili comme langue nationale en Tanzanie, mais aussi, – ce livre en témoigne avec éloquence –, comme langue du discours scientifique et universitaire. Pour écrire l’histoire de la langue swahili, David Massamba fait appel à de nombreuses disciplines et à des arguments venus de l’archéologie et de la recherche historique tout autant qu’à des éléments tirés de discours identitaires ou à des raisonnements de type linguistique. Il se propose de repenser les origines du swahili, en passant au crible les diverses théories qui ont été émises à ce sujet. Les deux points essentiels qu’il s’efforce de prouver sont d’abord que le swahili est une langue bantoue dont la composante arabo-orientale a été surévaluée ; ensuite, il propose un nouveau scénario pour expliquer l’émergence du swahili sur la côte est-africaine. Concernant le premier point, David Massamba discute le mythe répété à l’envi qui fait du swahili une langue métisse, mélange de langues bantoues et d’arabe. Il réfute aussi l’hypothèse selon laquelle cette langue aurait d’abord été un pidgin à base arabe. En accord avec la majorité des bantousites actuels, il affirme que le swahili est une langue bantoue dans sa structure et son origine, qui a simplement intégré du vocabulaire d’origine arabe du fait de contacts sur la longue durée avec des commerçants venus de la péninsule arabique. En deuxième point, il réfute enfin l’hypothèse d’un foyer originel unique d’où aurait émergé la langue swahili avant de gagner le reste de la côte orientale de l’Afrique. David P. B. Massamba est professeur de linguistique générale à l’Université de Dar es Salaam (Tanzanie). Ancien directeur de l’Institut de recherche sur le kiswahili (TUKI), il est l’auteur de nombreux travaux de phonologie et de linguistique historique.

Karen Blixen, sans doute meilleure fermière que linguiste, écrivait : " Le swahili, idiome des tribus côtières, est un langage primitif et non grammatical " ( Ombres sur la prairie, traduit du danois, Paris, 1962, p. 6 ). Ces idées n'ont certainement pas disparu d'une certaine vision touristique de l'Afrique de l'Est. Le terme swahili, voire kiswahili ( le ki- indique qu'il s'agit d'une langue ), est apparu dans les écrits des premiers voyageurs et missionnaires européens en Afrique orientale et australe au milieu du XIXe siècle. Le kiswahili était la langue de Zanzibar, et Zanzibar était pour beaucoup une île des Mille et une nuits. Au milieu du XXe siècle, le kiswahili est devenu la langue d'un grand pays, la Tanzanie, né de l'union entre le Tanganyika et Zanzibar. Cette langue, qui était perçue comme une langue de marins ou de commerçants côtiers musulmans, est aujourd'hui la langue d'un immense pays et demain peut-être de toute une région, l'Afrique de l'Est, depuis que le Kenya développe son enseignement. Le kiswahili a partie liée avec le panafricanisme et son avenir ne peut laisser indifférents les amis de l'Afrique. En faire une langue moderne a demandé un travail de près d'un siècle, dont ce livre rend compte. Dire le monde d'aujourd'hui - du rap à la science-fiction - dans une grande langue bantoue demeure un projet digne d'intérêt. Tel fut le rêve de Julius Nyerere !

A lot of what we know about “exotic languages” is owed to the linguistic activities of missionaries. They had the languages put into writing, described their grammar and lexicon, and worked towards a standardization, which often came with Eurocentric manipulation. Colonial missionary work as intellectual (religious) conquest formed part of the Europeans' political colonial rule, although it sometimes went against the specific objectives of the official administration. In most cases, it did not help to stop (or even reinforced) the displacement and discrimination of those languages, despite oftentimes providing their very first (sometimes remarkable, sometimes incorrect) descriptions. This volume presents exemplary studies on Catholic and Protestant missionary linguistics, in the framework of the respective colonial situation and policies under Spanish, German, or British rule. The contributions cover colonial contexts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia across the centuries. They demonstrate how missionaries dealing with linguistic analyses and descriptions cooperated with colonial institutions and how their linguistic knowledge contributed to European domination.

In Children of the Soil, Tasha Rijke-Epstein offers an urban history of the port city of Mahajanga, Madagascar, before, during, and after colonization. Drawing on archival and ethnographic evidence, she weaves together the lives and afterlives of built spaces to show how city residents negotiated imperial encroachment, colonial rule, and global racial capitalism over two centuries. From Mahajanga’s hilltop palace to the alluvial depths of its cesspools, the city’s spaces were domains for ideological debates between rulers and subjects, French colonizers and indigenous Malagasy peoples, and Comorian migrants and Indian traders. In these spaces, Mahajanga’s residents expressed competing moral theories about power over people and the land. The built world was also where varying populations reckoned with human, ancestral, and ecological pasts and laid present and future claims to urban belonging. Migrants from nearby Comoros harnessed built forms as anticipatory devices through which they sought to build their presence into the landscape and transform themselves from outsiders into "children of the soil" (zanatany). In tracing the centrality of Mahajanga’s architecture to everyday life, Rijke-Epstein offers new ways to understand the relationships between the material world, the more-than-human realm, and the making of urban life.
