The main goal of the IPN Video Study is to systematically describe and analyse physics instruction and to investigate its relevance for understanding-oriented learning in the classroom. In the first phase of the IPN Video Study, various guidelines and instruments for data collection were developed and published. In the second phase of the project, a more elaborated approach was realised.This technical report provides an overview of all the tools and methods used in this study. It shows how to run a video study that analyses patterns of instruction and their impact on cognitive as well as motivational-affective learning outcomes. The report includes the documentation of the organisation and realisation of the IPN Video Study. In addition, it provides standardised guidelines for collecting video tapes. Moreover, the technical report presents standardised guidelines for the transcription of video tapes and describes the observation and coding procedures in detail. Finally, this volume reports scale documentations of all tests and questionnaires.

Video study is a complex methodological approach, which enables the employing of various strategies, methods or techniques for generating, collecting and analysing video data, i.e. audiovisual data grounded in rich situational contexts. Section I focuses on the power of video to describe the dynamics of teaching and learning in the classroom. It presents various video studies conducted in the past fifteen years that aimed to describe the practices of teaching. Section II focuses on the use of video in investigating the effects of teaching on student learning. The chapters present approaches that build on video studies in order to link data about classroom processes with data about learning outcomes. The project School-In was an in-service professional development project which aimed to improve inclusion and facilitate schools' academic results by taking the local context, expectation structures, and school culture into consideration. This report documents indicators and instruments in the context of inquiry-based science education (IBSE). It is embedded in a project that aims at disseminating inquiry-based science teaching on a large scale across Europe. Recent research about IBSE is rather specific to individual research questions and focuses on single aspects of IBSE. Furthermore, the instruments and indicators underlying the different studies are predominately not systematically covered. In this report single indicators and instruments in the context of science education are brought together. Thereby a coherent database and a link to different research results are presented. The indicators and instruments in this report originate from a systematic literature review about IBSE from 2005-2009. To receive a comprehensive picture about research on IBSE the scope of this review contains instructional aspects (1), implementation areas of politics/stakeholders (2) and teacher education and teacher professional development (3). This report contributes to supplying a systematic overview about instruments and indicators in the field of IBSE. This book reports the findings from the tri-national video study Quality of Instruction in Physics (QuIP). Within the scope of the QuIP study, physics instruction was investigated in a total of 103 classes from-Finland, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and German-speaking Switzerland. The main aim was to identify typical patterns of physics instruction of the three samples and to investigate conditions under which these patterns are successful with respect to students' learning, interest and motivation. Among others instructional characteristics, the quality of students' practical work, successful patterns of sequencing, the subject matter structure and teaching strategies were investigated by means of analyses of video-recorded lessons. Variables external to instruction that were investigated included teachers' professional knowledge and students' cognitive abilities. The study followed a pre-post-design with data collection prior to and after an instructional unit on electrical energy and power. The results are well in line with the findings from large-scale international studies indicating a particularly successful instructional pattern in Finland. A comparison of characterisation of instruction in comparison between the three countries reveals important findings for the improvement of the teaching and learning of physics in secondary school education.

The focus of this work is on human driving behavior in road traffic. Two aspects of it are covered, the prediction of it, including the identification of relevant influencing factors, as well as the behavior generation for autonomous vehicles. The behavior prediction is based on a field study during which participants drove a measurement vehicle through inner-city traffic. Using the driven trajectories and lidar recordings complexity features to describe the surroundings at the intersection, the traffic there and the driving path are defined. The driving behavior is characterized by further features. Based on the complexity features regression models are trained to predict the behavior features. For that, linear regression, random forest and gradient boosting machine are utilized. Different complexity feature sets, including ones that are reduced with the help of an autoencoder, are used for prediction. The results show that the driving behavior can be predicted reliably. However, when using complexity feature sets with only few features the prediction performance is reduced. In order to obtain a complexity score that is in line with human perception of complexity, an online study using videos of approaches to intersections was conducted. In pairwise comparisons participants were asked to identify the more complex situation. From that data complexity scores for the intersection passes included in the study are calculated. Several methods are used to assign these scores to the runs of the original field study. Behavior regression models are trained using these assigned complexity scores. The results show that behavior prediction with the complexity scores is possible, however, most variants require to also consider the turning direction as a second feature. The behavior generation for decision-making at T-intersections is based on a discrete event system (DES). For it, several features are used to define events that describe the status of the decision-making process at the intersection. The events trigger the transitions between the states of the DES. All states are associated with either offensive or defensive driving behavior, which is implemented using the intelligent driver model. The algorithm is validated with a simulation framework. Using a generic map and several real maps, the decision-making model is simulated 14400 times while interacting with further cooperation vehicles. None of these runs resulted in a collision involving the vehicle running the algorithm and the times to pass the intersection can be explained by the numbers of cooperation vehicles and the intersection layouts. Further simulations are used to investigate the influence of limited visibility at the intersections on the model.
