Social Research and Disability argues that the contemporary rules of sociological methods outlined in numerous research methods texts make a number of assumptions concerning the researcher including ambulance, sight, hearing and speech. In short, the disabled researcher is not considered when outlining the requirements of particular methods. Drawing upon these considerations, the volume emphasizes how disabled researchers negotiate the empirical process, in light of disability, whilst retaining the scientific rigour of the method. It also considers the negative consequences arising from disabled researchers’ attempts at "passing" and the benefits that can emerge from a reflexive approach to method. Primary research in education and social sciences is marked by a diversity of methods and perspectives. How can we accommodate and reflect such diversity at the level of synthesizing research? What are the critical methodological decisions in the process of a research synthesis, and how do these decisions open up certain possibilities, while closing down others? This book draws upon methodologically diverse literature on research synthesis methods and primary research methods to develop a framework for synthesizing research. It presents a Methodologically Inclusive Research Synthesis framework to facilitate critical and informed decision-making among the producers and users of research synthesis. Three guiding principles for a quality research synthesis are proposed: informed subjectivity and reflexivity, purposefully informed selective inclusivity, and audience-appropriate transparency. The book then provides a thorough discussion of how these principles might be enacted in the following six phases: -identifying an appropriate epistemological orientation -identifying an appropriate purpose -searching for relevant literature -evaluating, interpreting and distilling evidence from selected studies -constructing connected understandings -communicating with an audience. The purpose of this Special Issue on inclusive research is to capture internationally, “How far have we come?” and “Where do we need to go?” Such questions are relevant now that it has been close to two decades since Walmsley and Johnson (2003) first introduced the inclusive research paradigm in their text, Inclusive research with people with learning disabilities: past, present, and futures. Within this Special Issue we have reprinted 18 articles that promote inclusive research as a paradigm that has succeeded in transferring power to people with intellectual disabilities who were once the "researched" to now being and becoming the "researchers". The articles draw upon the work of co-researchers both with and without the lived experience of disability who have adopted inclusive research as a paradigm to redress the exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities as researchers. All the 18 articles have an eye on the future and are sequenced across the following themes: the individual impact of being and becoming an inclusive researcher; building inclusive research relationships as a duo; being part of an inclusive research network; and using inclusive research to push boundaries and facilitate issues of importance identified by people with disabilities. ‘Working Together, Learning Together’ (WTLT) is the name of the nationwide inclusive research project in the Netherlands we conducted from 2016 tot 2020. Within this research project, the PhD research work of Sofie Sergeant involved an inclusive and action-orientated reflective practice of developing training for other inclusive research teams. The PhD manuscript is built up upon a collection of five papers. Two research questions are guiding: What are the catalysing ingredients and conditions for organising inclusive research in order to overcome attitudinal barriers, barriers in the social process, material barriers and within-person barriers? Based upon these ingredients and conditions: what kind of training and coaching is needed? The forlaying PhD research work identifies and explores four conditions for inclusive research: Safe research spaces and sense of belonging; Room for collaborative learning and competence building; Multi-sensory communication and research methods; Time for reflection on power, ownership, vulnerability, prejudice, stigma, and the risk of tokenism. The developed training is referred to as ‘the CABRIO-training’: a coaching and training program for ‘transdisciplinary’ teams consisting of researchers with academic background, professionals from diverse disciplines and research team members with disability experience.
