Interaktion ist ohne konkreten Raum- und Ortsbezug kaum denkbar. In der institutionellen Kommunikation kommt diese Raumbindung besonders prägnant zum Ausdruck, weil sich hier charakteristische Räume ausdifferenziert haben, in denen die Kommunikation ihr soziales Zuhause gefunden hat: Gottesdienst im Kirchenraum, Unterricht im Klassenzimmer, Ausstellungen im Museum oder die Produktion von Radiosendungen im Aufnahmestudio. Dieser Zusammenhang von Interaktion und gebautem Raum steht im Zentrum des Sammelbandes: Wie wird durch und mit Architektur Interaktion möglich und erwartbar gemacht (Interaktionsarchitektur)? Wie bringen die Beteiligten in ihrer Nutzung der Architektur ihr Alltagswissen über soziale Räume zum Ausdruck (Sozialtopographie)? Wie fließen diese Ressourcen in die Herstellung eines je konkreten Interaktionsraumes ein? Mit diesen Fragen ist ein vielversprechendes interdisziplinäres Forschungsfeld aufgespannt, das in empirischer, theoretischer und methodologischer Hinsicht erschlossen wird: mit Fallanalysen zu den genannten Räumen, mit Beiträgen zur Theorie und Methodologie und mit interdisziplinären Experten-Kommentaren.

This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of spatial configurations of language use and of language use in space. It consists of four parts. The first part covers the various practices of describing space through language, including spatial references in spoken interaction or in written texts, the description of motion events as well as the creation of imaginative spaces in storytelling. The second part surveys aspects of the spatial organization of face-to-face communication including not only spatial arrangements of small groups in interaction but also the spatial dimension of sign language and gestures. The third part is devoted to the communicative resources of constructed spaces and the ways in which these facilitate and shape communication. Part four, finally, is devoted to pragmatics across space and cultures, i.e. the ways in which language use differs across language varieties, languages and cultures.

With attention to the methodological questions that arise from the attempt to study such changes empirically, it offers new theoretical foundations for understanding the social construction and reconstruction of spaces through communicative action. Seeing communicative action as the basic element in the social construction of reality and conceptualizing communication not only in terms of the use of language and texts, but as involving any kind of objectification, such as technologies, bodies and non-verbal signs, it considers the roles of both direct and mediatized (or digitized) communication. An examination of the conceptualization of the communicative (re-)construction of spaces and the means by which this change might be empirically investigated, this book demonstrates the fruitfulness of the notion of refiguration as a means by which to understand the transformation of contemporary societies. As such, it will appeal to sociologists, social theorists, and geographers with interests in social construction and urban space.

In dem vorliegenden interdisziplinären Band werden Versiegelungskontexte dieser Black Boxes untersucht oder Öffnungsversuche dieser dargestellt. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen stehen einzelne Fallbeispiele anhand derer theoretische Untersuchungswerkzeuge erprobt werden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung nähert sich dem kommunikativen Funktionieren von Museumsausstellungen aus zwei Perspektiven. Der erste Untersuchungsteil arbeitet mit den Methoden der Textlinguistik und -semiotik. Er beantwortet empirisch die Frage, wie Besucherinnen und Besucher die multimodalen Erscheinungsformen im Ausstellungsraum als Kommunikationsangebot auffassen und nutzen können. Ausgehend von einem umfangreichen Korpus von Fotografien werden kommunikative Aufgaben rekonstruiert, die die Ausstellung mit Hilfe von Exponaten, Texten, Museumsarchitektur und Ausstellungsdesign löst. Der zweite Teil der Studie basiert auf Videoaufnahmen von authentischen Museumsbesuchen. Hier wird mit den Methoden der Gesprächsanalyse untersucht, wie Besucherinnen und Besucher das Kommunikationsangebot im Ausstellungsraum für die interaktive Konstruktion von Wissen nutzen. Analysiert wird speziell, wie sie mit ihrer Interaktion an das multimodale Kommunikationsangebot im Ausstellungsraum anknüpfen. Das erlaubt schließlich, die beiden analytischen Zugänge in einen übergeordneten theoretischen Rahmen zu integrieren.

This is the first book dedicated to the study of the complexities that arise in embodied interaction from the multiplicity of time-scales on which its component processes unfold. It shows in microscopic detail how people synchronize and sequence modal resources such as talk, gaze, gesture, and object-manipulation to accomplish social actions. The studies show that each of these resources has its own temporal trajectory, affordances and restrictions, which enable and constrain the fine-grained work of bodily self-organization and interaction with others. Focusing on extended interactional time scales, some of the contributors investigate ways in which larger interactional episodes and relationships between actions are brought about and how actions build on shared interactional histories. The book makes a strong case for the use of video in the study of social interaction. It proposes an enlarged vision of Conversation Analysis that puts the body and its interactive temporalities center stage.
