This edited book examines how sexuality and sexual identity intersect and interact with other identities and subjectivities – including but not limited to race, religion, gender, social class, ableness, and immigrant or refugee status – to form reinforcing webs of privilege and oppression that can have significant implications for language teaching and learning processes. The authors explore how these intersections may influence the teaching of different languages and how pedagogies can be devised to increase equitable access to language learning spaces. They seek to open the conversation on intersectional issues as they relate to sexuality and language teaching and learning, and provide a conversational space where readers can engage with the notion of intersectionality. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of applied linguistics and language education, gender and LGBTQ+ studies, and sociolinguistics, outlining possible future directions for intersectional research.

Building on the pioneering 2009 volume, Race, Culture, and Identities in Second Language Education, this book reflects the significant expansion in the research since its publication and offers a wider breadth of perspectives on the complex theoretical terrain of race, racism, and antiracism in language education. Contributors to this book apply a range of conceptual and methodological lenses to teaching diverse world languages. Underscoring the interconnectedness of race and colonialism, world language education, and intersectional ideologies, this book offers a forum for engaged dialogues among teachers, teacher educators, teacher candidates, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, curriculum developers, policymakers, and educational researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including language education. In covering important theoretical frames and constructs—including raciolinguistic and anti-oppressive pedagogies, decoloniality, neoliberalism, and reverse linguistic stereotyping—this book breaks from the Global North norms in applied linguistics and language instruction. An essential text in TESOL and world language education, this volume weaves meaningful connections among language education, language-in-education policy, and research.

Runner up, British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Book Prize 2023 This book combines teaching-informed research studies and research-informed teaching accounts which explore English language education that engages with (a)gender and (a)sexual diversity. Informed by critical theories, critical literacy, post-structuralism, queer theory, and indigeneity/(de)coloniality, the critical perspectives in this volume consider gender and sexuality as dimensions of human life and aim to promote sexual, gender, emotional and relational wellbeing together with the construction of cultural horizons and citizenship. The chapters are organised around three interdependent areas of inquiry: 1) how educators design pedagogies and curriculums around gender diversity and sexuality, 2) how students and teachers navigate issues of gender diversity and sexuality in practice, as well as 3) how issues of gender diversity and sexuality are (not) addressed in the materials for teaching and learning English. The contributors are all teacher educators-researchers and therefore have vast experience in enacting, implementing, designing, and examining the field of English language teacher education from/for the classroom with a gender perspective in diverse settings, with chapters come from Argentina, Bangladesh, Canada, Germany, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, the UK and Uruguay.

Multiliteracy Play written by Chantelle Warner and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book proposes to expand multiliteracies frameworks in second language education, by recognizing that learning a new language and culture involves both designs and desires, the affects and emotions that feed our responses to particular ways of making meaning. Over the past two decades, multiliteracies approaches to second language education have brought attention to the diversity of modes, media, language varieties, and discourses involved in what we often shorthand as language learning. A core concept in these discussions is the idea of meaning design, the idea that languages are dynamic, culturally-shaped systems of resources for engaging with and making sense of the world. Building on these discussions and drawing inspiration and practical examples from a variety of modern language classes in higher education in the USA, the book demonstrates how poetic and playful language can be embedded in multiliteracies pedagogy in ways that foster learners' and teachers' awareness of designs, while also making space for desires that are harder to script or plan for. In addition to building a conceptual map around poetics and play for researchers and teachers in language education, the book offers concrete examples of what a multiliteracies approach emphasizing designs and desires can look like in classrooms and curricula.

Language and gender are interconnected, social and relational acts through which we constantly remake our worlds. But what happens when our ways of doing gender cannot be neatly categorized into traditional binary systems, including not only the social groupings of roles, practices and identities, but also the forms and structures through which we do language? This book brings together a broad range of scholars to explore the undoing and redoing of gender binaries in non-Anglophone communities and contexts, in and through their linguistic and social reimaginings. Each of the contributions to this book reflects on this ongoing change and its place in our everyday lives, including the ways that its outcomes are both contested and fluid. This volume represents an important step in scholarship in language and gender, one that stands to inform a public increasingly aware of these remakings and one that calls on all of us to stand in the tensions of our own humanity and look through it for how our languaging might ‘do’ imaginary worlds that are more equitable, more connected, and more just for us all.

“In the vast majority of language education literature, it seems as if we have been collectively imagining a monosexual community of interlocutors," denounced Cynthia Nelson in 2006. Nearly two decades later, her statement still seems widely true, despite marginal attempts to challenge this situation, not yet fully addressed by mainstream publishers, educators or policymakers. The aim of this book is to contribute to creating more hospitable learning contexts by usualising diversity and queerness in the teaching of English worldwide, a field which, supposedly fostering a “lingua franca” has frequently spread white, masculine, Western, colonial and cisheterosexist stances, among others. How did queerness become a movement in the teaching of English? How can practitioners respond to counterreactions? How has queer research developed in English Language Education? How can teaching materials be queer or anti-queer? How can literature and drama be used when teaching English from a queer perspective? What would a queer class of English be like? What is the situation of queer teachers of English in different countries? These are just some of the questions answered in this book, edited by Esteban López-Medina, Griselda Beacon, Mariano Quinterno and Xiana Sotelo. Contributors are: Juanjo Bermúdez de Castro, Jules Buendgens-Kosten, Tatia Gruenbaum, Cristina A. Huertas-Abril, Nicolás Melo Panigatti, Thorsten Merse, Cynthia D. Nelson, Joshua Paiz, Francisco Javier Palacios-Hidalgo, Michel Riquelme-Sanderson, Sue Sanders, Tyson Seburn, Keiko Tsuchiya and David Valente.
