During the last decades, applications of dynamical analysis in advanced, often nonlinear, engineering systems have been evolved in a revolutionary way. In this context one can think of applications in aerospace engineering like satellites, in naval engineering like ship motion, in mechanical engineering like rotating machinery, vehicle systems, robots and biomechanics, and in civil engineering like earthquake dynamics and offshore technology. One could continue with this list for a long time. The application of advanced dynamics in the above fields has been possible due to the use of sophisticated computational techniques employing powerful concepts of nonlinear dynamics. These concepts have been and are being developed in mathematics, mechanics and physics. It should be remarked that careful experimental studies are vitally needed to establish the real existence and observability of the predicted dynamical phenomena. The interaction between nonlinear dynamics and nonlinear control in advanced engineering systems is becoming of increasing importance because of several reasons. Firstly, control strategies in nonlinear systems are used to obtain desired dynamic behaviour and improved reliability during operation, Applications include power plant rotating machinery, vehicle systems, robotics, etc. Terms like motion control, optimal control and adaptive control are used in this field of interest. Since mechanical and electronic components are often necessary to realize the desired action in practice, the engineers use the term mechatronics to indicate this field. If the desired dynamic behaviour is achieved by changing design variables (mostly called system parameters), one can think of fields like control of chaos.

Segregation is a pervasive phenomenon whereby a flowing granular mass consisting of particles with diverse physical properties becomes spatially inhomogeneous. In the industrial sector that deals with the handling and processing of bulk solids, this non-uniformity is highly undesirable since blend homogeneity is generally a stringent requirement of most products. In the arena of geophysical flows, segregation can enhance the destructive capabilities of natural events such as avalanches and landslides. During the last 15 years, these issues have provided motivation and fostered collaborations between the communities of mathematicians, engineers, industrial researchers, and physicists to develop predictive models of segregation by integrating the perspectives and approaches of each. The collection of unique papers brings to light many of the perplexing scientific and technical issues in our current understanding of this complex phenomenon. It addresses advances in experiment, computational modeling and theory. This volume is one of the very few books devoted entirely to problems of segregation of particulate solids.

The International Workshop on “Embedded Systems - Modeling, Techn- ogy, and Applications” is the seventh in a successful series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universität Berlin. The goal of those workshops is to bring together - searchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. The series of workshops started in 1990 with the International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and was continued with the International Wo- shop on “Advanced Software Technology” in 1994. Both workshops have been hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1998 the third workshop took place in Berlin. This International Workshop on “Communication Based Systems” was essentially based on results from the Graduiertenk- leg on Communication Based Systems that was funded by the German Research Society (DFG) from 1991 to 2000. The fourth International Workshop on “Robotics and its Applications” was held in Shanghai in 2000. The fifth International Workshop on “The Internet Challenge: Tech- logy and Applications” was hosted by TU Berlin in 2002. The sixth Int- national Workshop on “Human Interaction with Machines” was hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The subject of this year’s workshop has been chosen because the field of Embedded Systems has not only gained major interest in the research community but has also significant economic impact in different appli- tion fields. Mechanic, hydraulic, and electronic control systems are being replaced by microcomputer based embedded systems.

The aim of this book is to present the mathematical theory and the know-how to make computer programs for the numerical approximation of Optimal Control of PDE's. The computer programs are presented in a straightforward generic language. As a consequence they are well structured, clearly explained and can be translated easily into any high level programming language. Applications and corresponding numerical tests are also given and discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first book to put together mathematics and computer programs for Optimal Control in order to bridge the gap between mathematical abstract algorithms and concrete numerical ones. The text is addressed to students and graduates in Mathematics, Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Numerical Software, Information Technology and Engineering. It can also be used for Master and Ph.D. programs.

The papers in this proceeding are a collection of the works presented at the IUTAM symposium-Marrakech 2002 (October 20-25) which brought together scientists from various countries. These papers cover contemporary topics in multiscale modeling and characterization of materials behavior of engineering materials. They were selected to focus on topics related to deformation and failure in metals, alloys, intermetallics and polymers including: experimental techniques, deformation and failure mechanisms, dislocation-based modelling, microscopic-macroscopic averaging schemes, application to forming processes and to phase transformation, localization and failure phenomena, and computational advances. Key areas that are covered by some of the papers include modeling of material deformation at various scales. At the atomistic scale, results from MD simulations pertaining to deformation mechanisms in nano-crystalline materials as well as dislocation-defect interactions are presented. Advances in modeling of deformation in metals using discrete dislocation analyses are also presented, providing an insight into this emerging scientific technique that can be used to model deformation at the microscale. These papers address current engineering problems, including deformation of thin fIlms, dislocation behavior and strength during nanoindentation, strength in metal matrix composites, dislocation-crack interaction, development of textures in polycrystals, and problems involving twining and shape memory behavior. On Behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank Professor P.

Sørensen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The dynamics of transitional and turbulent flows is often dominated by organized structures with a life-time much longer than a characteristic time scale of the surrounding small-scale turbulence. Organized structures may appear as secondary flows as a result of an instability but they persist in turbulent flows. They manifest themselves as eddies or localized vortices and play an important role in e.g. mixing and transport processes. Al though the existence of organized structures has been revealed by many experiments and by numerical simulations they are somewhat elusive, as there is no consensus on how to define them and technically how to detect them. In recent years several identification tools for analysing complex flows have been developed. These tools include various versions of the Proper Orthog onal Decomposition (POD) technique, wavelet transforms, pattern recogni tion, etc. At the same time, improvements in experimental techniques have made available data that further necessitate efficient detection methods. A prominent example is the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique from which complex spatio-temporal flow data can be obtained. An interesting feature of some of the identification techniques is that they form the basis for reduced models by which dynamical processes can be studied in details. From studies of dissipative dynamical systems it has been revealed that, in phase space, transitional and turbulent flows can be identified by their low-dimensional behaviour. Thus, employing data from experiments or nu merical simulations to form modes residing on finite-dimensional attractors may dramatically reduce computing costs.

Iutam Symposium On Rheology Of Bodies With Defects written by Ren Wang and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-11 with Science categories.

The IUTAM Symposium on Rheology of Bodies with Defects was held in Beijing in September, 1997. It was aimed at the development of Rheology in Solid Mechanics. Rheology is classified in Applied Mechanics Review under fluid mechanics, however, in its broadest content as was envisaged in its earlier days, it covers the whole spectrum of material behavior from elasticity, plasticity, and fluid mechanics to gas dynamics. It was thought of as a branch of continuum mechanics, but emphasized the physical aspects of different materials, and frequently proceeded from basic physical principles. As the temperature rises, the distinction between solid and fluid, and the distinction between their micro-mechanical movements, become blurred. The physical description of such materials and their movements must be based on the thermodynamic principles of state variable theory; the classical division between solid and fluid mechanics disappears. Under the classification adopted by Applied Mechanics Reviews, the subjects dealt with in this symposium come closer to viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity, especially close to the subdivision of creep dealing with creep rupture. The symposium focused at building a bridge between macroscopic and microscopic research on damage and fracture behavior of defective bodies made of metal, polymer, composite and other viscoelastic materials. Two different approaches are presented at the symposium. The first is a continuum damage theory for time-dependent evolution of defects at the macro/meso/microscopic levels.

This book contains the edited version of invited lectures presented at the IUTAM-Sym- sium Synthesis in Bio Solid Mechanics, held at Hotel Frederiksdal, Virum (Copenhagen), Denmark, May 24 to May 27, 1998. The symposium was attended by 48 scientist from 14 countries. Biomechanics has been a very active research area in the last 25 years and covers a very broad class of problems. The present symposium concentrated on the solid mechanics - main of biomechanics, where important problems of synthesis presently are an active and challenging part. Characteristics of biomechanical materials are not only the inhomogeneity and anisotropy, but also the capability to change in relation to actual use. These living materials call for new methods of analysis and also new methods for synthesis. By the synthesis in this context is meant design of implants or artificial control of material growth. Bone mechanics is closely related to recent work on analysis and design of microstructural anisotropic materials. Also, recent work in shape design can to some extent be useful in the more complicated problems of biomechanics. Here interface problems play an essential role. The symposium brought together scientists from mechanics, mathematics and medicine.
