In a book of compelling power and vision, Newman brings the heated debate over the control of crime back to where it belongs: the nature of punishment. And he argues that the crucial question we must ask is what kind of punishment, rather than how much of it, fits the crime. Although talking of corporal punishment without conjuring visions of torture is not easy; Newman makes his case persuasively.

The practice of mass incarceration has come under increasing criticism by criminologists and corrections experts who, nevertheless, find themselves at a loss when it comes to offering credible, practical, and humane alternatives. In Civilization and Barbarism, Graeme R. Newman argues this impasse has arisen from a refusal to confront the original essence of punishment, namely, that in some sense it must be painful. He begins with an exposition of the traditional philosophical justifications for punishment and then provides a history of criminal punishment. He shows how, over time, the West abandoned short-term corporal punishment in favor of longer-term incarceration, justifying a massive bureaucratic prison complex as scientific and civilized. Newman compels the reader to confront the biases embedded in this model and the impossibility of defending prisons as a civilized form of punishment. A groundbreaking work that challenges the received wisdom of "corrections," Civilization and Barbarism asks readers to reconsider moderate corporal punishment as an alternative to prison and, for the most serious offenders, forms of incapacitation without prison. The book also features two helpful appendixes: a list of debating points, with common criticisms and their rebuttals, and a chronology of civilized punishments.

A Just Measure Of Pain written by Michael Ignatieff and has been published by New York : Pantheon Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Social Science categories.

This book returns to the historical moment of the creation of the penitentiary in industrializing England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The book documents the rise of a new conception of class relations and a new philosophy of punishment. Both were directed at the mind rather than the body, wherein the whip, the brand and the gallows were being replaced by the prison. The ways in which the middle and upper classes tried to forge new methods for controlling the poor and the ways the poor and imprisoned resisted those controls are examined. The author raises questions about the manner in which reform can be used to consolidate the power of the state and about the moral boundaries of authority.

Much of the work performed in organizations around the world today is project oriented. Those responsible for leading the majority of these projects to successful results have varied educational backgrounds, knowledge, skill sets, and experiences gained over the course of their lives and careers that do not include the professional discipline known as project management. Most are managing projects as part of their role, not their profession. However, these accidental project managers frequently run into the same sort of issues and problems faced by those whose profession is project management, but they lack the education or training to properly address them. As a result, more projects run by accidental project managers fail than succeed. This handbook was developed specifically for those accidental project managers and for the relatively new project managers within the profession. It is uniquely organized in a manner designed to help these project managers quickly find specific solutions to the problems they are desperate to fix right now! The text is divided into two broad categories: the Art of Project Management and the Science of Project Management. Each part is divided into chapters to narrow the user's search by type of issue that project managers encounter, such as Planning and Managing Risks. These are then further divided by specific problems labeled as sub-chapters, such as 'The company's project management process doesn't work for me' and 'My project is too dependent on a few key people'. Project Pain Reliever: A Just-In-Time Handbook for Anyone Managing Projects is essentially a plug-and-play answer to the accidental project manager's problems, and a valuable desk reference for all project managers. Key Features: Presents insights and specific guidance from more than 30 leading project management experts that were sourced from around the world for their specialized knowledge and experience Provides quick references to problems often encountered by anyone managing projects and specific solutions to these problems using language that is easy to understand and techniques that can be applied immediately Each of the 93 sub-chapters brings clarity to the perceived problem, describes warning signs, includes a sidebar example, explains what will happen if you do nothing, and outlines a best practice solution and specific steps for solving the problem WAV offers handy "What you have learned" summaries for addressing problems contained within the book, additional problems with solutions, and other useful resources — available from the Web Added Value Download Resource Center at www.jrosspub.com

The Punishment Response written by Graeme Newman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-28 with Social Science categories.

Punishment occupies a central place in our lives and attitudes. We suffer a profound ambivalence about its moral consequences. Persons who have been punished or are liable to be punished have long objected to the legitimacy of punishment. We are all objects of punishment, yet we are also its users. Our ambivalence is so profound that not only do we punish others, but we punish ourselves as well. We view those who submit too willingly to punishment as obedient verging on the groveling coward, and we view those who resist punishment as disobedient, rebels. In The Punishment Response Graeme Newman describes the uses of punishment and how these uses change over time. Some argue that punishment promotes discrimination and divisiveness in society. Others claim that it is through punishment that order and legitimacy are upheld. It is important that punishment is understood as neither one nor the other; it is both. This point, simple though it seems, has never really been addressed. This is why Newman claims we wax and wane in our uses of punishment; why punishing institutions are clogged by bureaucracy; why the death penalty comes and goes like the tide.Graeme Newman emphasizes that punishment is a cultural process and also a mechanism of particular institutions, of which criminal law is but one. Because academic discussions of punishment have been confined to legalistic preoccupations, much of the policy and justification of punishment have been based on discussions of extreme cases. The use of punishment in the sphere of crime is an extreme unto itself, since crime is a minor aspect of daily life. The uses of punishment, and the moral justifications for punishment within the family and school have rarely been considered, certainly not to the exhaustive extent that criminal law has been in this outstanding work.

The title of this book The Pain within my Soul speaks for itself, since the author uses real-life stories from personal experience and each story may personally touch the reader's soul. Not by chance, the subtitle of the book is Short Stories about Crime and Life, where it is sometimes hard to divide one from the other. This book introduces a collection of stories about crime and life written in different styles of writing. The author of the book, during her experience as both a journalist and a police officer, would interact with people who committed crime. That's why these stories are based on true events and real people though for ethical norms, the names of the characters and places were changed. The author defines causation of crime through her own perspective. Despite the public's negative perception towards criminals, the author tries to convey the idea that some criminals had no other choice but to commit a crime in order to survive in their tough periods of life. The author shows that a border between understanding criminals and non-criminals might be indecipherable and only one step is enough to move from a non-criminal to a criminal and vice versa. These real stories are examples of particular types of crime and issues in criminal justice system, for example, turf wars among criminal justice agencies (story: Nobody's); disadvantaged families as a major factor which leads adolescents to run away from home (story: Fruit Garden); social demographic characteristics such as: poverty, lack of education as factors which lead to prostitution (stories: On the Corner of Earth; Flower of the Blind Alley; Weeping Blizzard). Other stories provide by itself examples of different types of crimes: group rape (stories: He gave me Up; Valley of Crying Tulips), murder (story: Twisted Vine of Destiny), coerced confession (story: Two Steps into the Past; I Confess). This collection of stories will be of great interest to students of law and criminal justice as well as the general readers.
