Der personale und moralische Status des menschlichen Embryos gehört an erster Stelle zu den philosophisch völlig unbewältigten Problemen der bioethischen Literatur. Die bioethische Kompetenz aber der originalen, nichttransformierten Ethik Kants läßt sich v. a. an diesem Thema demonstrieren. Die von Kant herausgestellte moralisch-praktische Grundgewißheit der individuellen Autonomie und der Gemeinschaft der Autonomie beglaubigt die Idee des als Embryo im Werden begriffenen praktischen Subjekts. Kants Ethik erzielt mit der Idee der Selbstorganisation und Selbsterweiterung der Autonomie-Gemeinschaft, dem gemeinschaftsverantwortlichen Herüberbringen eines Subjekts moralisch-praktischer Vernunft als einer Person-in-der-Idee in die Welt, über die bioethisch fundamentale Würde und Schutzwürdigkeit des Embryos eine konkurrenzlose Klarheit. Die scheinbar selbstverständliche Gebundenheit der praktischen Subjektivität an den Besitz des Selbst- und Verantwortungsbewußtseins, oder an irgendeine vermeintliche Vorform dieser Moralmündigkeit, hat für Kantisches Moraldenken praktisch-ethische Verirrungen zur unvermeidlichen Folge. Zur bioethischen Erweiterung der Kantischen Ethik, einer Ausschöpfung ihrer bioethischen Implikationen, trägt die Konfrontation des subjektstheoretischen "Einbürgerungsmodells" mit dem "Kooptationsmodell" wesentlich bei. Die "Einbürgerung" läßt allerdings den Herkunftsbereich der Freiheit hinter dem Bereich der durch Einbürgerung und Sicheingliedern errichteten moralischen Freiheitsgemeinschaft verschwinden. Die Freiheit, und mit ihr die praktische Subjektivität, bleibt in der ausgrenzenden Demarkation ihrer Herkunft, einer kühn selbst die Allmacht Gottes anrührenden Fixierung, unter dem Namen eines "Faktums" das tiefste Geheimnis der menschlichen Existenz

Ausdrücke, die für mich subjektiv gesehen eigentlich klar sind, beginnen sich beim tieferen Nachdenken darüber zu verändern und werfen immer mehr Fragen auf. Immanuel Kants Definitionen über die Würde des Menschen und darüber, was ein Mensch ist bringen mich in einem ersten Schritt nicht wirklich an ein gedankliches Ziel. "Nach Kant besteht die Würde des Menschen in seiner sittlichen Autonomie. Dabei ist für Kant Sittlichkeit und die Menschheit, sofern sie derselben fähig ist, dasjenige, was allein Würde hat" Autonomie heißt meiner Meinung nach Freiheit. Und Sittlichkeit bedeutet, sich an vorgegebene gesellschaftliche Regeln und Normen zu halten.

Samuel J. Kerstein develops a new, broadly Kantian account of the ethical issues that arise when a person treats another merely as a means, that is, 'just uses' the other and thereby acts wrongly. He takes his inspiration from Immanuel Kant's 'Formula of Humanity', which commands that we treat persons never merely as means but always as ends in themselves, and then develops the ideas suggested by the Formula into clear moral principles. Kerstein questions the plausibility of an orthodox Kantian account of the dignity of persons, before going on to develop a new, detailed account of his own. Kerstein's second main goal is to show how the Kantian principles he develops shed light on pressing issues in bioethics. He investigates how, morally speaking, scarce resources such as flu vaccine ought to be distributed—and he argues that allocating such resources in order to maximize benefits can be inconsistent with respecting persons' dignity. The book explores the morality of regulated markets in organs, and contends that in many contexts, buying organs from live 'donors' fails to honour their dignity. Finally, it probes the ethics of conducting research on 'anonymized' biological samples, and of conducting placebo-controlled pharmaceutical trials in developing countries. How to Treat Persons champions the view that even if an agent gets another's voluntary, informed consent to use parts of his body for transplantation or medical research, she might nevertheless be treating him merely as a means or failing to respect his dignity.

This open access book revises Kant’s ethical thought in one of its most notorious respects: its exclusion of animals from moral consideration. The book gives readers in animal ethics an accessible introduction to Kant’s views on our duties to others, and his view that we have only ‘indirect’ duties regarding animals. It then investigates how one would have to depart from Kant in order to recognise that animals matter morally for their own sake. Particular attention is paid to Kant’s ‘Formula of Humanity,' the role of autonomy and the moral law, as well as Kant’s notions of practical reason and animal instinct. The result is a deliberately amended version of Kantianism which nevertheless remains faithful to central aspects of Kant’s thought. The book’s final part illustrates the framework’s use in applied contexts, addressing the issues of using animals as mere means, the ethics of veganism and vegetarianism, and environmental protection. Nico Dario Müller shows how, when furnished with duties to animals, Kant's moral philosophy can be a powerful resource for animal ethicists.
