A vibrant meditation and poetic call for an African utopian philosophy of self-reinvention for the twenty-first century In the recent aftermath of colonialism, civil wars, and the AIDS crisis, a new day finally seems to be shining on the African continent. Africa has once again become a site of creative potential and a vibrant center of economic growth and production. No longer stigmatized by stereotypes or encumbered by the traumas of the past—yet unsure of the future—Africa has other options than simply to follow paths already carved out by the global economy. In the industrialized nations of the global North, well-funded agencies like the CDC attend to citizens' health, monitoring and treating for toxic poisons like lead. How do the under-resourced nations of the global South meet such challenges? In Edges of Exposure, Noémi Tousignant traces the work of toxicologists in Senegal as they have sought to warn of and remediate the presence of heavy metals and other poisons in their communities. Situating recent toxic scandals within histories of science and regulation in postcolonial Africa, Tousignant shows how decolonization and structural adjustment have impacted toxicity and toxicology research. Ultimately, as Tousignant reveals, scientists' capacity to conduct research—as determined by material working conditions, levels of public investment, and their creative but not always successful efforts to make visible the harm of toxic poisons—affects their ability to keep equipment, labs, projects, and careers going.

Réunissant une équipe pluridisciplinaire dans le cadre du programme de recherche « Groupe National de Travail » (GNT) du Codesria, cet ouvrage scrute les dynamiques de l’enseignement supérieur depuis le processus de réformes entamées en 1993. Engagées sur plusieurs axes tels que la raison d’être de l’enseignement supérieur, les dynamiques internes, les rapports avec l’environnement, les différentes contributions démontrent les interconnexions entre les différents aspects de l’enseignement supérieur entre eux ainsi qu’avec les autres espaces sociaux. Elles lèvent aussi le voile sur sa nature profonde du système et soulignent ses évolutions, ses impasses et ses contradictions. Le constat sur l'organisation et le fonctionnement des trois universités gabonaises (Université Omar Bongo, Université des Sciences et Techniques de Masuku, Université des Sciences de la Santé) appelle une réflexion profonde sur la place de l'université dans le processus de développement national. L'élaboration de cette réflexion a commencé avec les travaux de recherches doctorales des auteurs, menés en France et au Canada. Ils font état d'une gouvernance qui présente un écart entre les référentiels et les pratiques en cours impliquant à la fois les acteurs internes des universités (les étudiants, les enseignants-chercheurs, les administrations) et plusieurs autres services de l'Etat.
