Cultural content as well as intercultural and culture-reflective aspects are key concepts in foreign language pedagogy. But how are these key concepts reflected in teaching practice and teaching materials? This book provides a sound theoretical basis of research concerning both teaching materials and culture pedagogy. In a contextualized textbook analysis, we explore to what extent research insights are integrated into six frequently used Dutch and Polish course books for beginning adolescent learners of German. A selection of good practice examples from international teaching materials display the implementation of various cultural contents and provide input for a wide array of cultural activities and teaching objectives, which can be directly implemented in teaching practice.

Teaching Interculturality Otherwise written by Fred Dervin and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-19 with Education categories.

This edited volume focuses on the thorny and somewhat controversial issue of teaching (and learning) interculturality in a way that considers the notion from critical and reflexive perspectives when introduced to students. Comprised of three parts, the book discusses the nuts and bolts of teaching interculturally, considers changes in the teaching of interculturality and provides pedagogical insights into interculturalising the notion. It studies both teaching im-/ex-plicitly about interculturality and how to incorporate interculturality into teaching practices or into an institution. By sharing varied cases and theoretical reflections on the topic, the editors and contributors from different parts of the world aim to stimulate more initiatives to enrich the field instead of delimiting it, especially in complement to and beyond the “West” or “Global North”, and also to build up further reflexivity in the way readers engage with interculturality in education. This will be a must read for teachers and researchers of intercultural communication education at different educational levels, as well as anyone interested in scholarship on education for interculturality.

New directions in regional and cultural Studies are the topic of intense debate among representatives of the field of teaching German as a foreign/second language. At the international research conference on Regional and Cultural Learning in the Context of Globalization: Between Theory and Practice in March 2016 at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) a special emphasis was placed on the way that different structures of thinking, meaning patterns and worldviews can be implemented and dealt with in foreign language teaching. The volume at hand unites 18 conference contributions and additional articles that discuss the state of regional and cultural learning from the most different perspectives and depict a broad spectrum of the most different approaches and areas of operation of our field.

This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany. Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.
