In order to provide eye protection for military personnel, two types of laser-protective filter elements were developed for use as inserts in the Goggles, Sun, Wind, and Dust. The elements were designed to be snapped into the goggle frame in back of the standard ballistic lens. A total of 600 Type A filter elements with optical density greater than 4.0 at 400-532 nm and photopic transmission of 44% were delivered to the U.S. Army Natick RD & E Center. These elements met contract requirements with the exception of photopic transmission and resistance to sodium hypochlorite solution. A total of 275 Type B filter elements with optical densities exceeding 4.0 from 694-1064 nm were delivered to Marine Corps Systems Command. These elements measured substantially below the desired 25% minimum photopic transmission, exhibited excessive optical distortion and dye nonuniformity, lost abrasion protection after contact with sodium hypochlorite solution, and lost hardest adhesion after simulated exposure to sunlight.

There is a need to provide eye protection to military personnel at risk from laser beams, An advanced concept in laser-protective eyewear consists of an optical interference filter that transmits only three narrow spectral bands one red, one green and one blue, and blocks all the rest of the visible spectrum including the wavelengths of all currently popular- lasers. Vision through this filter is excellent. Outdoor scenes are bright and clear and in full natural color. The effect is like that of a pair of fine sunglasses but without the sunglasses' color distortion. This program optimized the placement of the three transmission bands for best color rendition and maximum laser coverage. Two versions were developed one with narrow transmission bands for daylight use, and one with wider bands for twilight use; and 24 pairs of eyewear of each version were delivered to the Army. In addition, one goggle with transmission bands only two nanometers wide at half-height was fabricated as an experiment to see how far the concept could be pushed. The view through this goggle was far too dark for indoor use, but the view outdoors in the sunlight was astonishingly good - again like a pair of fine sunglasses. The above filters were all fabricated on flat glass lenses. The major effort on this program consisted of developing technology for fabricating them on curved plastics such as polycarbonate for use in goggles such as the Army's Sun, Wind and Dust, (SWD) goggles. Fabrication of interference filters as complex as the Tristimulus filter on plastics has never heretofore been successful because the finished filters would always self-destruct as they cooled.

The objective of this work was to develop the technology for depositing a dielectric narrow-band reflector on thin glass foil without unmanageable stress and bond this filter face-in to a cylindrically curved polycarbonate substrate to form an environmentally durable laminated visor. A dielectric coating that blocked three laser wavelengths (532 nm, 694 nm, and 1064 mn) was applied to paper- thin glass foil. Methods were developed for cementing this glass filter to the polycarbonate insert for the Sun, Wind and Dust Goggle, and trimming away the excess glass foil. In every case, the bonded glass film cracked and separated from the polycarbonate substrate. Failure analysis performed on the fractured glass indicated that the primary mechanism of failure involved microfractures at the glass edge. Several methods were used to prevent their formation or inhibit their growth, without success. The effort to construct the visor was unsuccessful.

Methods for providing advanced spectacle and goggle laser protection for visible lasers include reflective dielectric coatings and holograms, tuned for specific wavelengths. The primary advantage of these methods compared to the current fielded broad band absorptive dyes is the potential for increased visual transmission for a given amount of protection. However, dielectric coatings and holograms are angle and position sensitive such that the locations of the eye positions are critical for the desired protective effects. This study measured the right and left eye positions (lateral (x), vertical (y), and fore-aft (z)) of 20 military subjects fixating straight ahead while wearing an EPS-2l Sun, Wind, and Dust goggle using mechanical methods. The lateral and vertical eye positions were also determined using a reflective method for rapid data acquisition. The reflections from the goggle lens and eyes were captured with a digital camera and analyzed with a computer program. The results showed that the eye positions measured mechanically for this sample varied similarly about the x, y, and z axes.
