The book is about a couple which is under extreme pressure to maintain a normal life despite the ravages of the diseases: diabetes, Alzheimer's, and three bouts of strokes, which have befallen the author's wife. The saga about the couple is true and is still ongoing. The story telling in the book will probably stop when either the subject of the stories or the story teller himself is gone. The book has only two main characters, the author and his wife. The author, acting as caregiver to his wife, tells stories about the events that are affecting his wife. There are plenty of those events which affect her differently compared to other people, because of her impaired mental and physical capacity. There are eight chapters in the book corresponding to various aspects affecting the author's wife. Chapters include: Chapter 1 - The Strokes, Chapter 2 - Protecting Amelia, Chapter 3 - Tolerance and Accommodation, Chapter 4 - Different Outlooks for Amelia, Chapter 5 - Incidents Involving Amelia, Chapter 6 - Amelia Goes Cruising, Chapter 7 - Amelia's Travel Destinations, Chapter 8 - Cruise Ship Events and Incidents, followed by an Index Each chapter has enough scenes to describe specific events that affect the author's wife. For example the followng scenes are described in: Chapter 2 - Protecting Amelia: Hazards at Home, Measuring Food Intake, Medical Alert, Preventing Near Falls, Glucose Tracker, Surveillance Cameras, Amelia is Home - Not Nursing Home - Bound, Driving Around Comfortably, Medications, and Last Line of Defense Based upon the events that adversely affect his wife, the author sets up a mission to make her as happy as possible during her remaining life. His mission is to devote utmost effort in helping her recover from her ailments, if possible, and to extend to her affordable conveniences while she is still in a condition to appreciate them. Her idea of being happy is being able to travel; after all, she is a retiree. She still appreciates the visible aspects of things around her. The author does not waste any time implementing his mission. He does not want to have lingering regrets of missing the opportunity of affirming his love for his wife; after all, her condition is dire, she might degenerate into complete helplessness anytime. Progressing Alzheimer's and the third stroke are dampening the author's mission; nonetheless, he becomes even more determined to achieve it. He has as many travel plans as his wife is able and willing to take, without exacerbating her frail physical and mental condition. Each travel time provided plenty of scenes and topics to describe. The book is built up by different places visited and unique events that affected the couple. It is also built by changes in the habits and idiosyncracies of the author's wife. The designations of the diseases: Strokes, Alzheimer's, Diabetes are contracted by the author to 'S.A.D' to sound like the mood when someone is sorry and unhappy when things are not turning favorably his way. Things are turning very much against the author's way.

This book is about caregiving performed by the author on the principal character, Amelia, the author's wife. She has been suffering from ill health due to strokes, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and congestive heart failure. The author-turned caregiver strives to prolong her life by combining caregiving and leisure. By all account, the effort has been successful for a considerable period, almost fifteen years. The couple forced to retire from their jobs due to the first two massive strokes - she already had four - suffered by Amelia, embarked on a vacation and recreation spree to make the most out of her diminished capacity. They traveled to and visited more places than they ever dreamed of doing while they were still active. Ironically, they would not have undertaken the enjoyable activities of extended vacations were it not for her ailments. All seems to be positive and forward-looking, the downside being the aspect of caregiving. The author, vowing to take care of his wife while he is still capable, has assumed the role of caregiver despite their advancing age. At first, he felt he would never be able to handle the chore, his entire life and training being in an office, until the occurrence of the first two strokes. Gradually, he learned by himself and became skillful in the art of caregiving. However, as the chore of caregiving was becoming second-nature to the author, diabetes, Alzheimer's and congestive heart failure have always been overwhelming the effort. The urge of placing Amelia in a nursing home facility has been considered several times, but each time compassion, pity, and skepticism prevail, dissuading the idea. So the role of supporting Amelia continues on the part of the author turned-caregiver. She needs to be assisted in most of her physical activities, like exercising, bathing, walking, and even eating. She needs to be told to swallow her food and drinks. Incontinence is a major problem particularly away from home. Still unfazed by mounting adversity, the author desperately retains control of the situation without committing Amelia to a nursing home facility, providing support and care at their own home. But time is ticking, each tick bringing Amelia closer to the inevitable - death. When she was diagnosed with severe stenosis of the heart just a month shy of her 78th birthday in February 2016, she was only given a year of surviving the lone disease. The other deadly body disorders, strokes, diabetes, and Alzheimer's, have completely engulfed her too. By Thanksgiving week of 2016, the publication date of this book, Amelia is on the 9th month of the doctor's pronouncement, three months short of the projected one-year survival period. Although her health is noticeably in rapid decline, the family still hopes to enjoy Christmas of 2016 and beyond. Considering that she has been surviving the four deadly diseases for almost fifteen years, the author's efforts of caregiving is deemed a success. Amelia has been outliving more than half a dozen acquaintances who were healthier, more robust, and free of ailments at the time she had the first two strokes.

The book is about a couple which is under extreme pressure to maintain a normal life despite the ravages of the diseases: diabetes, Alzheimer's, and three bouts of strokes, which have befallen the author's wife. The story is ongoing as the author's wife is still up and only losing a slight ground against the diseases. The author hopes that the loss is due to age and not due to the advance of the diseases. The book has only two main characters, the author and his wife. The author, acting as caregiver to his wife, is implementing his mission which is to provide his wife the utmost health care and affordable conveniences while she is still able to appreciate the physical aspects of her surroundings. The author's wife loves to travel before and after the named diseases befell her. They still want to pursue the same life style even though she is not as mobile anymore as she was before the diseases debilitated her. Due to the limited options for physical activities, the couple perseveres in the pursuit of the only plans that are available. The plans of course, must be consistent with her ability to move freely with moderate assistance. The book has only two chapters. Chapter 1 deals with travel planning. Travel planning is focused mainly on ocean cruises; the author and his wife determined that ocean cruising is the best and the only reasonable option for traveling without exacerbating her physical and mental condition. Chapter 2 and a number of pages in the book deal with implemented travel plans. As more and more travels are pursued and enjoyed, more pages will be added to the story line in the form of revisions or new editions. A few pages of the book are dedicated to local travels which do not need planning. To keep his wife's mind and body occupied, the author figures that local travels will also help her in the fight against depression and self pity. The couple now accepts the irreversible effects of strokes, Alzheimer's, and diabetes. There is not much that they can do about them. The author hopes that the medical professionals as well as the drug manufacturers are able to come up with some type of wonder drugs that prevent the diseases from attacking the brain. Meantime, the author's wife, out of her sheer determination and a strong family support, is learning and starting to walk again. Hopefully, her progress continues and provides a happy ending in the story line.

The American diet is typically high in sugar consumption and extremely acidic. This lifestyle leads to insulin resistance, inflammation, diabetes, high blood pressure, risk for heart attack or stroke, and possibly dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In The New Threat of Type 3 Diabetes, authors Alan D. Raguso and Maria Lizotte offer an understanding of diabetes, discussing why people's health declines and why they get sick. Based on their personal and professional experiences with diabetes, they discuss concepts of body chemistry, look at inflammation as a health risk, and share how it's a result of improper food intake, heredity, and environmental conditions, along with economics, poor pH balance, lack of moderate exercise, and the modern technological world. Raguso and Lizotte tell how type 3 diabetes is a newly accepted category, connecting a lifetime of damage caused by excessive blood sugar levels. With illustrations and graphics included, The New Threat of Type 3 Diabetes reviews the basic definitions of medical terms, the possible connections to prediabetes, type 2 and type 3 diabetes, and the steps that can be taken to prevent or reverse these diseases. Raguso and Lizotte suggest ways to make simple changes to live more healthily, better, and longer.

Major neurocognitive disorders are one of the leading causes of disability and dependency among the elderly worldwide. Notably, their far-reaching impact extends beyond the estimated 50 million people currently living with a major neurocognitive disorder. As the conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses, patients’ symptoms (e.g., memory loss, severe impairments in thinking and behavior) place a heavy toll on their caregivers, family, and friends, who face emotional frustration, coupled with great financial stress. Furthermore, in terms of global cost estimation, the World Health Organization predicted that by 2030, the treatment of patients with AD and other forms of acquired cognitive impairment will cost the healthcare system US$1.7 trillion (or US$2.8 trillion, if corrected for the increase in care costs).

Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease or dementia is hard but with this book, you and your family will successfully face the challenges that these diseases present. Dementia is a very common neurological disease of aging affecting millions of people in complex ways. There are multiple forms of the dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia, and vascular dementia, among others, and many share features of slowly progressive and profound changes affecting memory, thinking, behavior, and personality. The disease often introduces personal and even financial strains, which can be at times hard to understand. Unfortunately, most forms of dementia have no definitive treatments to prevent, slow, or stop the progression, but there is a concerted effort in the scientific community to change this. There is a consistent hope that there will soon be a new era of scientific breakthroughs impacting dementia. Now, and in the future, patients with dementia, their friends, and their families need resources to successfully face the challenges introduced by the disease. Navigating Life with Dementia is designed as a handbook including tools to manage both day-to-day issues and to anticipate the long-term impact of the disease for dementia patients as well as their friends and families. This volume will help families in all stages of dementia care, beginning with the earliest hints of cognitive problems through advanced stages. In easily understood language, the book thoroughly covers the complexities of the dementias, the establishment of a diagnosis, what to expect throughout the stages of disease, and how to best anticipate and manage common problems.
