The Shakespearean image of a tempest and its aftermath forms the beginning as well as a major guiding thread of Logic of Imagination. Moving beyond the horizons of his earlier work, Force of Imagination, John Sallis sets out to unsettle the traditional conception of logic, to mark its limits, and, beyond these limits, to launch another, exorbitant logic—a logic of imagination. Drawing on a vast range of sources, including Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Freud, as well as developments in modern logic and modern mathematics, Sallis shows how a logic of imagination can disclose the most elemental dimensions of nature and of human existence and how, through dialogue with contemporary astrophysics, it can reopen the project of a philosophical cosmology.

Excerpt from Logic and Imagination in the Perception of Truth, Vol. 1: The Nature of Pure Activity in Two Series This is an attempt to review some scientific and philosophic principles within the ordinary modes of research and the categories of the plain man's way of thinking. There has been a humble attempt at analyzing the forms of knowledge and belief, but this does not claim more than to have touched upon that vast realm of the Reason that makes possible the universal synthesizing activity of the Mind's Life in the World of Experience. If this little book shall strengthen the belief in immortality, revive - the - faith of the Eternal Pres ence, suggest some good and fruitful ways of actualizing the teleological principle in life, restore the freshness of a withered hope, show the way in any degree to the establishment of a permanent rational faith, inspire some aspiring life with a little good-will and happiness of social relations in the Citadel of Peace, and encourage the strongly brave Spirit of invincible conquest under the com mission of Truth to some worthy achievement in the realm of science, literature, or art - the author shall deem it a recompense. "Lewis Carroll is known mainly for his children's novels and poems. Throughout these ingenious works he interspersed riddles, math and logic games, and a host of other puzzles, reflecting his interest in the ludic (playful) imagination. It is not widely known that Carroll is one of the greatest puzzle makers of history, composing them not only for children, but also for adults in magazines, periodicals, and books. One of his puzzle masterpieces is the so-called doublet puzzle, which he wrote for Vanity Fair, and is still one of the most loved wordplay games to this day. There have been various anthologies of Carroll's puzzles in recent decades, but virtually no study of their importance as part of a unique "puzzle art" exists. This book aims to examine this art as it manifests itself in Carroll's many puzzle creations, both within his novels, and in his many other writings. It dissects the blend of logic and imagination that he employs in creating riddles, anagrams, acrostics, math puzzles, logic games, and a host of other puzzle genres-all of which are discussed in the book. The main theme is that Carroll's literary writings cannot be truly grasped without taking into account his puzzle art"--
