Have you ever felt lonely? Isolated? Abandoned? No one escapes the feelings of loneliness caused by separation, grief, loss, or isolation. It can strike anyone young or old, outgoing or introverted, confident or uncertain. June Hunt, a biblical counselor, explains how being alone and being lonely differ, what leads to feelings of loneliness, how to identify situational causes for loneliness, what the psychological and physical symptoms of loneliness are, and how to overcome feelings of loneliness. God has placed within each of us a basic need for a relationship with Him and with others; therefore, our longing to belong is natural. You may feel like the entire world has abandoned you, as if no one understands your pain and sorrow, but the Bible promises that the Lord is with you always! God designed us to be in meaningful and satisfying relationships with friends, with family, and possibly with a husband or wife. But the reality is we can feel so lonely, so separated, so isolated, and thinking no one really understands. This mini-book Loneliness: How to Be Alone but Not Lonely gives Christian advice on how to find comfort in knowing God understands our deepest times of loneliness. He knows the heaviness of your heart. And you will find practical and biblical advice on how to find joy in times of solitude.

We can and should cultivate closeness in our relationships using the steps outlined in this book: knowing, caring, and mastering closeness. For most people, life today means less sleep, less leisure, and less exercise; semi-present parenting, junk food eaten on the run, more caffeine and more work. Our 24/7 news cycle shouts at us from every screen, keeping us on edge with haunting images of war abroad, terror at home, and threats to our finances and health around every corner. The depth and breadth of these phenomena have so profoundly impacted the quality of our lives that the way our bodies respond to it has devolved into a new diagnosis - SuperStress Syndrome - a form of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder produced by the 21st century's over-stimulating lifestyle. Under normal conditions, confronted with dangerous challenges, the human body releases stress hormones that prepare it to meet the demands of the perceived emergency, but then returns the nervous system to a restorative state when the crisis has passed. With SuperStress, stress hormones flow unabated and, unable to adapt to and accommodate this chronic hormonal surge, the human body begins to break down. In addition to immune deficiencies, acute gastrointestinal issues, high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, obesity, and insomnia, this process creates a numbing effect, causing those who experience SuperStress to often mistakenly identify themselves as 'being in control' and able to 'rest' at will. And so the insidious biological cycle continues. The SuperStress Solution shares world-renowned integrative physician Roberta Lee's unique prescription for recognizing, rebalancing, and protecting against the symptoms of SuperStress. It provides a comprehensive questionnaire to help readers evaluate their own level of stress, as well as a healing four-week programme - a series of small, easy-to-incorporate steps toward physical and emotional wellness - that will reset the nervous system and restore a sense of serenity, a well from which to draw strength day to day. The innovative SuperStress Solution programme includes: * Specific recommendations for healing nourishment - the super-foods, herbs and supplements that repair SuperStress damage and that will sustain the body during inevitable times of stress * A detoxification diet to jumpstart the physical repair process, as well as sample menus and a long-term eating plan * Novel ideas for synchronizing routines to a saner pace as well as Dr. Lee's prescription for better sleep * Illustrated exercises that can be done in 5 minute to 1 hour increments: from walking to stretching to golfing - there's something for everyone! * Proven meditative and relaxation techniques that create sanctuary, peace and calm in the moment

Was it a cultural thing or a traditional thing? Was this an instinct which came down the ages that the gene line had to continue, in times of strife and turmoil, that at least one child of that particular family, race, or clan managed to survive? All these are factors which have been affecting the lives of people all over the world, for millenniums, even though in many civilized countries, nobody bothers much about survival through gene lines, even though the subconscious wish that my line should linger on through my sons and grandsons is still very much a part of the male subconscious and psyche. In fact I was just laughing that once a person was dead and gone, he was not going to come back and see what was happening to the rest of his family, Après moi, le deluge or to say, once I am gone, who cares if the floods appear and catastrophe occurs. But then, I have a different way of thinking, which other people may not consider, and it is a good thing they do not, because if everybody began to think, all right, why should I bother about my descendants, once I have passed on, so I could not care less if I had children or not, mankind is going to be in great trouble. It has been exactly that sort of thinking, which has caused many administrations and governments in Europe to request their citizens to have at least one child. That is because for the last 30 years, the number of children being born in their countries has dwindled to a worrying bare minimum. The reason is that for some reason or the other, people have not begun worrying about what is going to happen to them, when they are going to grow old. They do not take their own mortality and old age, seriously, because after all, the state is going to take care of them. So why do they need to have children, were not going to take care of them, when they are old? Unfortunately, this is the feeling, which is prevailing in a large number of so-called developed societies, and eroding the tradition of the parents are not going to be left alone in their old age. But there is going to be a child who is going to take care of them out of the brood of kids, they bore and brought up. It is either through a sense of tradition or upbringing or a cultural duty.

If you were to watch the news lately, you will notice that opioid addiction has been declared a national crisis as many turn to drugs and other substances like alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, wine, and spirits to control their mind and thought process. Many also turn to psychiatrists to get relief from prescription medication. All these drugs, legal or illegal, have one thing in common: temporal and intermittent control of your feelings, emotions, and mind. A few years ago, while training as chaplain, we had a guest speaker who is a psychiatrist with more than thirty years' experience. She came to give a speech on emotional issues, and I raised my hand and asked her this fundamental question: what causes depression? Her response was, "Cause is unknown." This response troubled me as I thought to myself, if the cause is unknown, then why are millions of people being medicated? This book seeks to answer a fundamental question: are emotional issues like loneliness, fear, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts medical or spiritual issues? Your response to this question will determine where you go for help.

Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.
