'Game-changing. Katy Milkman shows in this book that we can all be a super human' Angela Duckworth, bestselling author of Grit How to Change is a powerful, groundbreaking blueprint to help you - and anyone you manage, teach or coach - to achieve personal and professional goals, from the master of human nature and behaviour change and Choiceology podcast host Professor Katy Milkman. Award-winning Wharton Professor Katy Milkman has devoted her career to the study of behaviour change. An engineer by training, she approaches all challenges as problems to be solved and, with this mind-set, has drilled into the roadblocks that prevent us from achieving our goals and breaking unwanted behaviours. The key to lasting change, she argues, is not to set ever more audacious goals or to foster good habits but to get your strategy right. In How to Change Milkman identifies seven human impulses, or 'problems', that commonly sabotage our attempts to make positive personal and professional change. Then, crucially, instead of getting you to do battle with these impulses she shows you how to harness them and use these as driving forces to help instil new, positive behaviours - better, faster and more efficiently than you could imagine. Drawing her own original research, countless engaging case studies and practical tools throughout to help you put her ideas into action, Milkman reveals a proven, inspiring path that can take you - once and for all - from where you are today to where you want to be.

As organizations strive to remain ahead of the competition, there will inevitably and often come the need for change. All successful organizations regularly use change to improve processes and increase performance. While these times of change can be a great opportunity for an organization, it also can be a time of stress and angst for all involved. Not all organizations are in a position to make these changes effectively and efficiently, and for many their efforts often fall short of the intended goals. Making Change Work: Practical Tools for Overcoming Human Resistance to Change was written to help organizations prepare for and successfully implement change. The price of a failed change effort can be steep, both monetarily and in a loss of credibility. Making Change Work will first provide tools to measure your organization's readiness to change, helping make sure that the efforts will not be doomed to fail from the beginning. The book then provides many tools to apply sequentially and logically in order to gain acceptance of the change throughout the organization. In helping your organization make change successfully, Making Change Work addresses buy-in, acceptance, motivation, anticipation, fear, uncertainty, and all the other messy human considerations that cause change to fail in the real world.

This NAO report forms part of a number of NAO reports looking at PFI (Private Finance Initiative) projects undertaken across the public sector. PFIs are contractual arrangements with private sector companies to design, build, finance and operate institutions such as schools and hospitals. At present there are over 500 operational projects throughout the UK, with a combined capital of £44 billion. It is also estimated that including future payments, with many projects running up until 2031-32, capital will rise to £91 billion. Given the length of many of the contracts, it is inevitable that operational changes to services will be required, so it is important that PFI contracts have flexibility, with built in value for money. The report is divided into three parts, with appendices. The NAO has set out a number of finding including: that PFI deals are offering sufficient flexibility to the public sector; that some projects achieve better value than others, but that (i) higher value changes were not always competitively tendered; (ii) for minor works, there was little consistency in the methods used by the public sector; (iii) that the cost of replacing items throughout the life of the contract was also inconsistently applied; (iv) that contractors had often charged additional fees, which were not specified in the original contract. The NAO recommendations, include: where there is a relevant contract clause, competitive tendering should be undertaken; for existing contract deals, authorities employing contractors need to put in place consistent and robust means to validate the costs of small changes; public authorities should explore with their private sector partners the feasibility of clarifying current contracts, so they follow current best practice; contract management should be properly resourced in order to manage the change process. Public sector authorities could improve value for money of operational changes by: adopting a strategic approach to changes; keeping a good permanent record of changes and payments made; fostering open lines of communication with front-line users and other stakeholders as well as the PFI contractor.

Many science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) faculty wish to make an academic change at the course, department, college, or university level, but they lack the specific tools and training that can help them achieve the changes they desire. Making Changes in STEM Education: The Change Maker’s Toolkit is a practical guide based on academic change research and designed to equip STEM faculty and administrators with the skills necessary to accomplish their academic change goals. Each tool is categorized by a dominant theme in change work, such as opportunities for change, strategic vision, communication, teamwork, stakeholders, and partnerships, and is presented in context by the author, herself a change leader in STEM. In addition, the author provides interviews with STEM faculty and leaders who are engaged in their own change projects, offering additional insight into how the tools can be applied to a variety of educational contexts. The book is ideal for STEM faculty who are working to change their courses, curricula, departments, and campuses and STEM administrators who lead such change work to support their faculties, as well as graduate students in STEM who plan to enter an academic position upon graduation and expect to work on academic change projects.
