Although a few books are available on the use of computers in the school office, this book is the first one addressing the topic of computer-assisted school information systems (SISs) for an international audience, based on both practical and scientific international collaborative research. This book: analyzes the nature of SISs, their intended benefits and history; presents the development strategies and the characteristics of three SISs that are widely used in various parts of the world; reviews what has been learned from the research over the last decade to inform successful design and implementation of SISs; presents exciting perspectives on the future of SISs from experts, vendors, and users; and reflects on what needs to be done to promote the full utilization of SISs by clerical and managerial school staff through better system design, user support, and continuing research. The book has been written for an international audience of students, researchers, system designers and implementers, practitioners and policy-makers in developing as well as in developed countries. It will also be of benefit to professionals in the field of school administration and school management to help them promote better use of SIS in their own context by learning from the experience of others.

Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management As the editors of this volume we are very happy to publish a selection of the papers that were presented at the eighth Conference of Working Group 3.7 of the International Federation for Information Processing which was held in July 2008. The focus of Working Group 3.7 is on ITEM: Information Technology in Educational Management (for more information, please visit our website http://item.wceruw.org/), and the theme of its 2008 conference was on the Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management. Our Working Group started its activities (officially we were not an IFIP Working Group at that time) in 1994 in Israel, so it made sense to look at how ITEM has evolved over the years and to reflect on what its future may be. The conference took place in Darwin (northern Australia) which even during the Australian winter is a very pleasant location for having a conference. The town of Darwin was given its name by the Captain of the Beagle (the ship on which Darwin travelled when he made the investigations on which he based his Theory of Evolution) who came to the area and named the town after the giant of science he admired.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: -, - (Makerere University Uganda Kampal), course: Masters of Education In information and Communication Technology, language: English, abstract: The study was about establishing the role of ICT in the management of secondary schools in selected schools of Central Uganda with particular interest on the role of ICT in enhancing effective financial management, the effect of ICT on examination management; setting, testing, record keeping and grading system and the role of ICT in enhancing effective communication in selected secondary schools in central Uganda. The study was prompted by the realization that management in many secondary schools in Uganda was characterized by inefficiency in the areas of financial management, examination management and dissemination of information in schools which had resulted into declining academic standards yet schools had ICT facilities that could enhance effective management. The study was carried out in selected secondary schools in Central Uganda. I used a cross sectional survey design in this study and I collected data using semi-structured survey questionnaires, interviews and observation. I logically analyzed Qualitative data as the study progressed and I used a Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and excel to analyze quantitative data. Purposive sampling technique was used and tables were used to determine the sample sizes. Upon the role of ICT on management of financial issues, I discovered that most of the schools were applying ICT facilities in management of financial issues; however some of the administrators lacked enough computer skill to effectively use ICT in the financial management of the school. The mostly used ICT facilities included electronic databases, internet, and computer applications such as Excel, Word and Access for managing teacher's pay rolls, allowances, salaries, school fees payment verification and procurement

The widespread introduction of information technology has had a huge impact throughout the secondary school, yet many schools still encounter problems in that IT is both a subject in itself and also a cross-curriculum skill. Moreover, it can be difficult to achieve the necessary balance between what is desirable and what is practical when faced with limited finance and staff skills and knowledge. The book also includes a useful glossary of technical terms. It also provides helpful activities which can be used for staff training. By examining IT from a whole school perspective, this book gives guidance to managers and governors on how to formulate a whole school policy for IT, and how to develop strategies for managing IT effectively. An important aspect of this is how to provide equality of access to IT through the organization of curriculum and resources.

The argumentative point of departure of this scholarly book is the common conviction of specialists in the field of education in South Africa that the national education system is not at a satisfactory level – in both the academic and the public discourse. Such allegations are made and, frequently, stronger adjectives than ‘non-satisfactory’ are used. Results of international test series in which South Africa has participated, such as the 2015 TIMSS tests, confirm the negative verdicts found in the (public and scholarly) discourse. This book aims to argue that although the lack of performance could be attributed to a multiplicity of factors, one factor that can make a difference in the achievement levels obtained by learners in schools is leadership. The book demonstrates that a particular problem of both the scholarly and the public discourse on education in South Africa is an overtone of defeatism or resignation, blaming all ills in the education system and educational institutions on historical legacies and/or contextual factors (such as socio-economic deprivation in the catchment areas of schools) or poor resources and infrastructure. This collected work was inspired by a recently published spate of articles on top-performing schools (including top-performing schools in rural communities), in which it was demonstrated that good leadership can overcome such contextual and other challenges. The book unpacks the issue of leadership in South African schools from a variety of perspectives, thus contributing to the development of the scholarly discourse on Educational Leadership in South Africa. The target audience of the book is scholars of Educational Leadership. The research reported in the chapters draw on a wide range of methodologies, including empirical (survey) research (questionnaires and interviews), critical literature surveys, and the comparative method.
